This was a great beer. I bought this at a Walmart in China. It has a hazy, almost golden color with a slight head. It has a citrus/wheat mix taste, not too strong but certainly not weak. It was smooth and enjoyable. I'll pick this one up again.

Serving Type: 500 mL Bottle

A- Pours a Hazy Copper colour topped by a fairly lacklustre, although pillowy 1/2 finger head.

S- Classic banana Hefe smell, along with a hint of wheat malt and zesty orange peel.

T- Less of the Banana and more orange peel, bubblegum. Noticeable taste of wheat malt.

M- Medium body and moderate carbonation.

O- A good example of a German Hefe that stays true to the traditional stylistic guidelines.

So long since I’ve had a real weizen. Nice pillowy head, grain aroma, slightly sweet, taste is light on the normal banana and bubblegum, but still fairly chewy. Fine sediment added via the bottle swirl, makes for a slightly cloudy beer. Good, but not the best.

L: clody amber orange color, gives of a fine medium head, fine lacing on the glass

S: Yeast, banana ripes , cloves, hints of citrus fruits and corriander.

T : folllows the nose for the most, yeast ,banana, citrus, cloves and other spices,

F: high carbonation , a bitterness in the finish that does not last for so long.very easy to drink

O: a good hefeweiz , easy drinkable. Taste is good. But i think it gets to anonymus in the taste compared to other weissbiers. is a lot of others in Germany that is much better, but all in all not a bad beer

So good-but-unexceptional across the board. The pour, nose, and taste profile are classic German weissebier. Cloudy straw-orange pour. Light dough and cloves on the nose. Light esters and light creamy malt flavor. It does all these well, but none great. This is a beer I wouldn't hesitate to pull off the shelf if one of my preferred hefes isn't available. However, it isn't special enough to seek out.

The color is hazy dark orange and has a creamy, light beige head. Aroma of banana, yeast, cloves, dry hay and lemon peel. The flavor is sweet along with more banana, yeast and wheat. Medium body, light and soft mouth feel, and a light bitterness. Nice but a fairly light hefeweizen.

Amber orange color with a thick off-white head with good retention, though smaller than average for style.
Light tart and yeasty aroma with notes of oranges, cloves and bananas.
Flavor with notes of spices (cinnamon, cloves, white pepper), banana, biscuit malt, orange-lemon tartness and bubblegum. Mildly dry aftertaste.
Light bordering medium body with appropriate carbonation.
Decent Weizen. Yeast spices did help not to make the banana esters too cloying.

So the bottleshop, aka Plonk, was out of Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen - I wouldn’t have a bar of The Höff (i.e. Schöfferhofer), Franziskaner or King Ludwig, I wanted the Big W. Then co-owner Liz mentioned Benediktiner being comparable to Big W, I hadn’t tried it yet... and here we are herren und damen: My review of Benediktiner Weissbier. Needless to say it has an uphill battle to be considered comparable to Weihenstephan’s greatest, but let’s give it a shot hey?

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Weizen glass.

A: Das ist nicht naturtrüb!* [said in my angriest German accent - you don’t want to hear how angry it is - it makes Adolf sound like a kitten] A barely hazed amber/orange body with a dense cream-coloured 3cm head which soon settles to half a centimetre. Weihenstephaner wins round one. 6/10.

S: Ripe banana, slightly sour/bready yeast and a hint of clove Phenol in the finish - A Weizen class act all the way... I think this is a tie - Big W got a slam dunk 10/10 for aroma too. 10/10.

T: All the elements are there: Ripe banana, bread yeast, hint of clove and pepper, with a slight (and entirely acceptable given the style) buttery Diacetyl. Finish is reasonably drier than other Weizens. The only thing this is lacking over the mighty Weihenstephan is a touch of flavour intensity - this one is, by comparison to Big W, a more muted profile. It’s still pretty tasty though! 8/10.

M: Mouthfeel feels a bit thin compared to other Weizens though with a mid to light body but creamy dense carbonation - it could be better here. 7/10.

D: Not bad at all, it’s no Weihenstephaner (which I can recall by rote now after all the cases I’ve had of it) but it is a half-decent Weizen to knock back when the bottleshop is out of Big W. One particular complaint I had was how boring it became as I got towards the end of the glass. I mean it’s not offensively bland but it certainly, as I mentioned above, use a bit more of a flavour kick... so the mighty Groß W still stands as my Hefeweizen König. 7/10.

Food match: I’m going to play it safe and say: Weißwurst mit senf und laugenbrot.

*Naturtrüb is the German term for cloudy yeast in the glass.

Light orange color, hazy. An abundant, average foam.
Bread-crust, wheat, light cloves at the nose.
Similar taste, easily drinkable, and thirst -quenching.
Maybe a bit too light and delicate.

I love this example of a weissbier, one of my favorites. It´s really good. Pours golden, hazy beer with a very nice white foam head of excellent retention. Aroma and flavor are right for the style, banana, clove, wheat, yeast. Great example of the weissbier.

Pours heavy amber with a small head.
Aroma of doughy wheat, banana and a little bubblegum.
Similar flavours but no bubblegum and with the addition of a faint lemon-like note.

Enjoyable. Hazy, dark orange-yellow color with a nice white head. Definitely get banana in the mouth and nose. Average carbonation for a wheat beer.

Hazy dark yellow, orange with huge white frothy head cinnamon and apple smell. Taste is citrus, vanilla and spicy herbs. Dry wheaty bitter finish. Average carbonation, medium body and creamy texture. Goes well with fish and chips, nuts, pretzels and chocolate cake.

Review according to BJCP2008 guidelines (style 15A). Bottle 50 cl - batch A090119. AROMA: wheat aroma with a somewhat sweet mixed aroma. very low esters or phenols. No hop aromas. APPEARANCE: dark golden color with orange tint. no haze with long lasting white head. TASTE: low wheat flavour. some residual sweet flavor present maybe due to malt. no phenols or esters. no hop flavour. finishes somewhat sweet. PALATE: medium body with medium to high carbonation. OVERALL: an odd weissbier with sweet after-taste.

500ml bottle poured in a chalice glass. Did not notice at purchase bottle dated 3/13/14, so it may not be the freshest. Decent head of foam that dissipates in a few minutes. Gold color, bordering on bronze. Smells floral. Taste is a rush of spices with malt and wheat. Mild carbonation, not too overpowering. The aftertaste is not great. Overall, a good beer. More on the bland side than complex.

A- muddy amber. Some carbonation can be seen rapidly rising amidst the yeasty haze. Fluffy light tan head. Great retention, beautiful lacing.

S- yeast, and lots of it. It also has aromas of lemon and banana.

T- bready, yeasty, some vague fruitiness. Citrus, and caramel.

M- light, velvety carbonation. Creamy finish.

O- good, but it lacks depth.

Pours a cloudy orange-ish amber with an off-white head of solid foam. It's probably a touch darker than the average color of hefes that I've tried but in line with the style. Good puffy head. Lots of foam. The aroma is banana wheat sweetness with a nice dash of light lemony sourness. Clove is light but present. Lots of wheaty, sugary flavor. The taste is rather mild, definitely could use a kick. Light sweetness with some wheat spice. Gets a bit watery with a wishy-washy finish. Not as bright as I expected from the aroma. Sort of an off aftertaste. Could be a stale bottle but it got to a local store pretty recently. Feel is smooth with a touch of prickly carbonation, though carb seems a bit low. This beer is mild and a bit lacking. It's easy enough to drink, but it doesn't merit a very high spot in my personal hefe rankings.

500ml bottle. Weizen glass. Amber color. foggy appearance. White, close & lasting crown leaves some s`pots on sides. Subtle candy & yeasty aromas. Crispy, floral & bitter at first rounded by banana hues. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Dense texture & spicy palate. Estery & malty flavors in the middle but bitter finish. Fruity memories on the aftertaste. Bready & refreshing!!

Poured into a weizen glass at a German pub in Northeast China.

Appearance was orange-ish, tan, and murky. Creamy 2 finger white head that thinned out to a cream top; some sticky lace on the glass.

Smell was sweet; light; spice; some elements of banana and clove; perhaps some breadfruit. some wheat and yeast were there, too.

Taste was caramel malt, light wheat, and toffee; perhaps some lemon zest, light fruit, and biscuits. Christmas spice, yeast, clove, and fluffy banana bread underneath the spice. The backend was balanced by some dry, yet sweet undertones. The overall balance between dry, sweet, and wet make it a great warm weather beverage, IMO. Great tasting brew.

Mouthfeel was somewhat thin; refreshing and lighter bodied. I could definitely drink a couple of these, no problem. A nice creamy mouthfeel, too. Quite nice.

Overall this is one of the better weissbiers out there. I would love to drink this in the warmer spring months. It just reminds me of a warm weather beer, not a deep winter beer. Drinking this reminded me of a time when green leaves were growing back on the trees, birds were chirping again, spring flowers were in full bloom, and the sun began to intensify. Wow, I need summer again. Drink this beer.

One of the best looking Weissbiers I've seen. The head was so thick and creamy, almost like the meringue on pie. Gorgeous color, nice and hazy, and plenty of bready aromas coming off the nose. Palate offers plenty of wheaty/bready flavors with nice tang from the yeast, minimal hop influence, and excellent drinkability. Carbonation felt a little low for the style, however. Very impressed with this new beer to my market.

Bottle: This one pours a slightly hazy coppery color. There was a small off-white head on it and not much lacing. It has an interesting aroma. Wheat, caramel, some spices. Possible banana hidden in there. The taste is very good. Wheat, some caramel malts, light spice. Neutral to slightly sweet.

Best before 3/14/14.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, wheat, yeast, spice, and slight banana aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour grain and banana flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable but not done all that well for the style.

Had a bottle on a hot night at a beer fest. Hard to grab much of an aroma, but it the mouthfeel was full-bodied with a spicy taste dominated by cloves--very little of the expected banana presence, but it did not take away from the overall experience and still quite refreshing. I'd drink it again.
