Got in a trade from Texas. This is a Texas wee heavy / scotch ale, made by No Label brewing. My first from this brewery but it looks like they have been brewing this for at least the last 9 years. Must be a winner. This came in a can at 12.3% rather than what is advertised here. A little stronger than the original, I take it. The cover art features a smoking gun sitting on top of a barrel, I guess that's the barrel where the beer was aged. Haven't had a wee heavy for quite some time. Interested to see what this is all about. It's a deep golden brown amber color, with a very light 1/4 inch head that lingers for a while. The lovely scent is butterscotch and toffee, maybe a slight touch of maple, caramel indeed. Now the head has gone hidden from view and escapes to the furthest corners of the glass, in hiding. Taste is very similar to the smell, toffee, lots of heavy malt, caramel and carmelized sugar, almost like a heath bar. Strikes me as a medium bodied beer that bubbles slightly. Kind of a candi like flavor to it that makes it quite delicious indeed. I have only enjoyed a wee heavy on the rarest of occasions, but this is a classic toffee flavored Scotch ale. I like these because they are akin to a barleywine, and are a type of old ale. My favorite beer is an old ale, Den Haag, made by Hoppin Frog. So this is right along my favorite flavor profile. And the fact that this is a BA wee heavy, makes this drink right up my alley. Cheers to this delicious drink!

Poured down side of glass with almost no head or lacing. Color was dark brown with little light passing through glass. Smelled like rich molasses, malty, and alcohol notes. Flavor starts out strong like bourbon and alcohol, and finishes malty and slightly sweet. Overall, I enjoyed sipping on this beer after dinner, but probably a little too strong on the alcohol smell and flavor to buy again.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Dark reddish brown with a nice, short lived head with good lacing. Nutty slightly boozey smell and taste. Some dark fruit, figs, vanilla. A bit of smoke. Nice beer!

12 oz bottle pours a very dark brown color with a thin head of tan head. Not much for retention or lace.

Nose isnt overly powerful. Some vanilla, plums, wood and roast...almost meaty even. Interesting aroma, but I dont know if I would call it delectable.

Taste makes up for it though as the fruit drops off precipitously and the wood and vanilla come to the forefront. There is some cola aspects in here and there is a little bit of peated malt but not heavy handed. What is surprising is how light-bodied it is - not very thick at all. All the flavors come together pretty well, its a good beer and definitely one of NL's best. But $20 for a 4-pack seems a bit excessive.

Brownish pour with a rich body, thin head and sparse lacing.
Smells like sweet malts with a hint of funk, and an ever far more distant hint of bourbon barrel.
Taste is toasted caramel, malts, wood.
Feel is dry, and medium smooth with moderate carbonation.
This is alright to sip, as a "wee heavy."
More scotch than anything in the end. A dry finishing, fairly thin wee heavy. Decent, but not near the Founders Backwoods one this is getting compared to.

Serving: 22 oz, blue wax sealed "select" bottle, poured into a 9 oz Libbey Embassy. December 2015 release.

Appearance: Muddy, medium brown with modest, bubbly tan foam and scarce head.

Smell: Satisfying, rich aroma of burnt caramel, vanilla beans, oak barrels, and hints of warming bourbon.

Taste: Malty broth of chewy caramel, dark fruit, brown sugar, vanilla and woodsy tannins.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, smooth feel with soft, spent carbonation.

Overall: Murky, chewy malt bomb with some great malt and bourbon barrel notes, but a bit flat in depth and complexity.

I was excited for this because I love Backwoods Bastard, but in the end I was simply reminded of how good Founders is...

Look is really dark for a Wee, with a nice head that persists.

Smell has some sweet molasses notes, but eventually becomes pretty boozy. Never really get the bourbon smell.

Taste is fairly simple, burnt brown sugar or molasses and hints of bourbon. Maybe I'm off or this bottle is, but there's not much going on.

Feel is good, medium, but nice and chewy. No bitterness to speak of, but that's not surprising.

Overall, it's fine, but I'm a little let down after the reviews this has. Not worth the money in my opinion.
