Poured from a plain-looking bottle with a nice label art of a Black Widow spider into a pint glass.

A - Dark, with a red-ish hue.

S - Smells a little like burnt licorice, some nutty and wheat tones as well.

T - Pretty good taste, nothing like the smell. Some chocolate, nuts. It has a little bite to it, but it is not hoppy at all.

M - Odd - it's got a little bite with some carbonation, which doesn't go very well with the flavor.

Summary - Not my favorite wheat ale, but a decent brew. Was expecting something more of the dark and smooth variety.

Growler filled at D&Q in Houston.

The beer pours a black color with an off-white head. The aroma has a lot of roasted malt and chocolate notes. I know this is supposed to be a black wit beer, but this smells much more like a schwarzbier.

The flavor has chocolate and toasted malt, but what really stands out is the anise, which is nearly overpowering. The wheat also makes an appearance in the flavor, but it is subtle.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

No Label Black Wit-O has a very thin, beige head, a dark, ruby-brown-black appearance, fierce, tiny bubble streams, and almost no lacing. Aroma is of licorice, dark malt, and sweet, brown bread. Taste is more bready than licorice, but that is certainly present. Bitterness is nil. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Black Wit-O finishes semi-dry and a bit bland and dull.

A - Pours a dark brown body. Minimal head, dissipates quickly.

S - Toasted caramel with faint chocolate tones.

T - Flattened malt with a liquorish finish. Painful aftertaste.

MF - Up to par with it's class.

O - I'll be honest, I don't like No Label. I want to, being that I was born and raised in Katy, Texas. But, the product falls short. This recipe, among a few others, don't meet the standard of most Austin Brew pubs, let alone an independent brewery. I enjoyed their Winter Warmer and their Milk Stout, but that's really where it ends.

*As a side note, they need to find a new label artist. It's as if these labels were created on Microsoft Paint.

12 oz bottle (with a creepy label) pours an opaque dark brown color...not quite black...with a thin off-white head. Surely a wheat beer should be able to get it up more than this! No lacing and no retention either....not starting out good on this one.

Nose is licorice, orange peel and poppy seed muffins. Smells ok, a little faint and I feel like the dark malt should be a bit more chocolaty.

Taste is a mélange of orange peel, roast, licorice and wheat tang. It does not all come together like it should and the flavors are so competitive, it lacks any flow whatsoever. It has a pithy aftertaste that is just not cool...and where is the coriander? It seems like coriander could really tie the room together...man...but shit...Woo really pissed on this rug hard core.

This one pours a nearly impenetrable black that has a thick long lived dark tan head that slowly settle to bubbles like the holes in sliced bread. The lacing is light in follows the head down the glass.

The nose is a crispy, smokey spiced malt with peppery notes of hopping with a sweet malt bed to float on.

The flavor is a nicely smoked malty experience that has the whit undertones that also lean towards some caramel, coffee and vanilla.

The mouthfeel is a tad more watery than I would have expected but not to much so.

Overall extremely satisfying and very drinkable.

On tap at Black Sheep. Had this at the Texas Craft Beer Fest a couple weeks ago too. Pours up super opaque brown with a khaki colored crown that lasts the entire way down. Just like I like my women. Aroma is tough to snag with all this wind and cuz I don't have a nose, but I'm gathering licorice, toasty breast malts, maybe a kiss of hops. Taste is licorice, vanilla bean, chocolate macChoco, nice hop backdrop balance. Very smoothe very very smoothe drinking, perfect carbo. I would say this is a damn good dark wheat brew. Nice to see Texas beers doin somethin right!
