Three Heads Ontario Coast IPA is a very sparkling, hazy, golden ale topped with a huge, fluffy, yellow-white foam. The retention is incredible and the lacing is great. Wow, this head looks like... well, kind of like Lake Ontario. The aroma is spicy and fruity, estery and a touch sweet. This doesn't really smell like an IPA to me. It smells Belgian. There are notes of grass and phenol. It's pretty big bodied, foamy and smooth. It's pretty lively and the finish is clean. This is not what I was expecting, but it tastes good. This is what I'd call a Belgian IPA, like La Chouffe Houblon or Raging Bitch. Yeah, it's quite phenolic, past bacon and stopping just short of band-aids. It tastes fruity, grassy, funky and bitter. The long, bitter aftertaste kind of burns the tongue and tastes a little like juniper. There is orange, apple and some kind of tropical fruit in the taste, but it's hard to tell because the phenol flavor kind of dominates everything. I must admit that this beer is a little disappointing. The rest of the 3HB offerings have been excellent, but this is a beer I wouldn't drink again on purpose.

Bottle purchased at CB Craft Brewers in Honeoye Falls, NY.

Pours a slightly hazy peach color, with a short-lived half inch head. There's some visible carbonation.

Smells like grassy hops, grapefruit, and Belgian yeast.

The taste is similar. Aspirin-like bitterness, grassy/earthy hops, fruity Belgian yeast esters. A little bland tasting and slightly watery tasting.

Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation. Crisp mouthfeel.

This wasn't entirely good. Drinkable enough and not offensive, but just a little boring. The flavors could be brighter and come together better.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into a perfect pint glass.

Pours murky hazy gold with heavy thick snowfall white foam. Pine nose gives way to Belgian yeast. Quite fruity. Strong herbal and rind taste. Orange citrus. Sweeteners beneath the surface, with a pokey hop finish. Boozy for sure. A bit all over the place, but that may be the point.

Three Heads : Ontario Coast IPA

LOOK: Clear golden colored ale with a white short lived head and some spotty lacework on the pint.

SMELL: Hoppy, fruity aroma with citrus and apricot being predominant. Alittle bit of caramel and bread round it all out.

TASTE: Orangey citrus and herbal hops, a touch of floral influence. Clean honeyed, toffee and slight caramel malt character does the job of providing the body, with a small crackery yeast note. Bitterness is mild but hop flavor is well pronounced. Just a small hint of alcohol, this beer drinks easy for its strength.

FEEL: Medium bodied , well carbonated, and easy drinking. The finish leaves behind a clean, sweet maltyness.

OVERALL: A nice IPA that shys away from aggressive bitterness. Good flavor and packs a punch. I can dig it but finishes a tad sweet for an IPA.

Pours a light blonde with a nice head into my glass. The description is intriguing and I genuinely missed the part about "monastic yeast".

Aroma is complex and overly ambitious. A beer that wants to unite both coasts and throw in belgian characterstics? The aroma is full of spicy yeast with a good mix of citrus and pine in the nose.

Very spicy and dominated by the pine end of things. It's actually a big odd flavorwise. "Doughy" in the middle but it's overpowered by alcohol.

Mouthfeel isn't too impressive either. Thin. Acidic.

I feel that this beer falls flat due to trying to be 3 different beers in one. The flavors clash too much for it to be enjoyable.

On draft at Hoptron Brewtique, Patchogue, NY.

Poured a slightly hazy brass hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured clean esters and a vibrant peppery hop.

The taste was likewise clean with flavors of fresh white pepper, sweet pale malt and an earthy active ester.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a very nicely crafted estery ale. Refreshing.
