A: Pours a very dark ruby color with 2 fingers of tan head

S: Lager yeast up front, along with some nice roasty malts and dark chocolate/coffee notes

T: Follows the nose. Starts with a combo of the yeast and malts and finishes with some light noble hop bitterness and a mix of brownie/lager yeast

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth

O: A very nice schwarz with some good flavors while still maintaining it's lager-ness. Easy to drink and good price point. Recommended

Recent bottle from Premiere. Meets the style, decent roast, drinkable, but not at the tastier satisfying level I have had from many o the other entries. Black with little head. Roast aroma, mouthfeel average but carbonation above average. Still, one of the better ones I have had from them.

My wife's from Rochester and we now live in Albany, NY. She wanted to pick up a few of the Three Heads Beers and this was one of them. This came in a bomber, and I should have been tipped off by the faint fermentation ring around the bottle's neck--but I wasn't looking that carefully. The bottle was spoiled--sour, watery and overcarbonated. I don't like to slam a beer, but this one obviously had major spoilage issues, so I figured it's worth warning others. (This may also explain the sour notes some other reviewers described).

22oz bottle purchased as a single from Savemore Discount Beverage, Clifton Park, NY.

Poured into am imperial pint, formed a 1/4" tan head over the clear dark brown brew. Head melts away, with ample lacing. Aroma is lightly metallic maltiness.

Taste starts with a light tartness coupling to the dark sweetness, touch of sour continues through the middle, and is also in the end with sedate bitterness. Mouthfeel is okay, with drinkability being limited due to the off-putting sour throughout.

Had on tap at British Beer Co in Walpole, MA.

Pours with a light creamy head, the beer is super dark molasses brown-black colored with hints of ruby light coming through.

Nose brings darker malts, a bit of chocolate, toasty bready malts, hint of black patent I think, hint of reddish malt and toastiness, and a light crisp lager.

Taste is a little creamy to start, chalky, with some dark powdered chocolate, crisp lager taste with a little fruitiness, hint of bready earthy malt flavors, hint of grassy hops as well, with a light black patent malt and chocolate. Finish is dry and crisp with lingering dark malts, and light lager flavor.

Mouth is med to lighter bodied, little creamy, decent carb.

Overall pretty good, drinkable and fairly tasty for being lighter beer, nice flavors, I could drink quite a few of these no problem.

Pours a deep amber to black in color with an off white head. In the aroma, not really much there except a small roast. In the taste, a small abrasion, with notes of roasty caramel. A small bite and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dryer, small roasty caramel in the aftertaste. A small roast, notes of caramel, and somewhat abrasive.

Appearance: pours a black color with a two finger head that lasts a while. Some moderate lace develops during the session.

Smell: roasted malts and dark chocolates are easy to detect.

Taste: roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit sweetness, grass, and a moderate bitterness create a well balanced beer.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp throughout with a short lived aftertaste.

Overall: easy to consume. Nicely refreshing for a black lager.

We pour a brew of the deepest nut brown, with golden brown flecks when held to the light. It holds a two finger head of latte-colored bubbles. This retains rather nicely, leaving sheets of spikey lacing around the glass. Carbonation appears average, and no haze or sediment is noted. The aroma gives medicinal phenols, deeply roasted malts, light bubblegum esters, leathery charcoal and smoke, baker’s yeast, and coffee milkiness. Cherry sweetness, Bretty yeast, and booze come with warmth. Our first impression is that it tastes like a coffee cup filled with nickels, but it is tasty nonetheless. As we sip, chocolate and coffee malts start things off with soft bitterness. There is a light char and some white sugar sweetness, with some metallics working their way in. This is cooling, giving the impression that there is fresh vanilla bean. The peak hits with mustiness, light grassy hops, and more of those deep, roasty malts. We finish with significant metals and yeast, in a bittering, yet somehow satisfying puck. Coffee, synthetic vanilla, and walnutty oiliness come in to back more souring grain here. The aftertaste breathes of heavy tin, coffee malts, bittering and souring grain and yeast, light medicinal phenols, light fruitiness of raspberry, and that light Bretty yeast of the nose. The body is medium to full, and the carbonation is medium to high. There is a light prickle to the tongue, with the mouth otherwise coated in an oily, astringent dryness of grain and coffee bean. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the taste. There is surprising complexity throughout, with a rich and deep malt profile contrasting with a nice hop and yeastiness throughout. The feel was also especially soft for the brewery, as they escaped the very characteristic slurp of their prior eight beers. This is a tasty beer, and certainly one of the best, thus far, from Three Heads Brewing.

22 ounce bottle into pilsener glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lasts. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of pear, apple, floral, chocolate, toast, dark bread, light roast, and herbal. Decent and pleasant aromas; but are not nearly as roasted as I expected for a schwarzbier. Fruity esters are stronger than the malt notes. Taste of chocolate, toast, roasted malt, toffee, pear, apple, floral, dark bread, earth, and herbal earthiness. Lingering notes of chocolate, toast, roasted malt, toffee, light fruits, floral, dark bread, herbal, and earth on the finish for a short bit. Nice flavor robustness and balance; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a pretty good schwarzbier. Nicely robust flavors with good balance; and very smooth to drink. This was a pleasantly enjoyable offering.

Another nice extra from Rochesteraaron, thanks bro!

A- Pours WAY darker than any lager I've ever seen. Really dark brown with a lighter head that dissipates quickly

S- Typical malty lager smell but theres more to it. Some chocolate and light coffee hit the nose in a great way

T- Lager + milk chocolate. Doesn't sound like it'd be good but trust me it's killer!

M- Nice and light as with most lagers

O- Best lager I have ever had by far! You rock Aaron!
