If you're driving or walking on Boston Street in B'more, on the edge of Canton and Fell's Point, you'll see a sign for a mini strip mall. "Canton Market- Beer - Wine - Liquors", "Potomac Insurance", "Cleaners". You may think, "hum..., no". I say, YES!
Check it out. I'm surprised this has not yet been listed on BA. Get closer to the joint and you'll see all the beer neons. Kind of like at Loading Dock on nearby Fleet Street, only the signs here are BMC and the beer inside is crafty good! (Not like Loading Dock, where they entice you with all those craft-beer neons and then the selection is pretty poor)
Canton Market is mostly a deli/convenience store, with a counter churning out sandwiches and some basic prepared foods (potato salad, egg salad, you-name-it salad). On the back, you'll find the booze section, almost evenly divided in beer/liquor/wine.
Now, the beer is mostly macro swill (this is Bawlmer, after all, where people revere Natty Boh and chug Miller Lite during Ravens games), but their small choice of craft beers is pretty impressive! Only place in miles around that has Great Divide Hercules DIPA and Yeti Imperial Stout in four-packs (plus Titan IPA and Claymore Scotch Ale). Also six-packs of Stone Ruination and Pale Ale and the boxy cartons of 21st Amendment IPA and Wheat Ale.
Chimay in 4-packs too, Brooklyn Chocolate Stout, Troegs Pils and Wheat, Southern Tier Wheat and IPA, Lagunitas Censored, Heavy Seas, Weyerbacher Autumn, Stoudts... all of this is cramped into one small shelf and one cooler!
On one side of this shelf is a mini seasonal section. Not sure whether the owners have set it up like this on purpose or it "just happened", but there you'll find Goose Island Mild and Flying Fish Grand Cru Winter Reserve (first time I see this beer, or Flying Fish, for that matter).
There are very few bombers... I bought a Stone Sublimely that had just expired as of October 2010, but it was fine.
Yep, don't expect a lot of quality here. Check freshness dates... service is fine at the registers, but that's it. No help choosing beer or wine.
Prices are a bit steep. All those Great Divide four-packs are $15.99!
But I like this place, and between the poor Loading Dock and the super-expensive Chesapeake Wine, I'll choose Canton Market!
