Judging by previous reviews, the latest incarnation may have been tweeked for the better. I was surprise to find out that Saaz hops are used for the aromatics, as the aroma is predominately pine, with a healthy amount of caramel and a hint of rye. Copper colored and hazy, there was nice head retention and plenty of lace. Big bodied, the flavor was similar in characteristics to the aroma, with a greater amount of rye and good balance between the hops and malt. Medium carbonation.

On tap at the brewpub.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the caramel and toffee with some pine notes mixed in. The beer definitely smells like an American IPA. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of grapefruit and resin notes as well as some bready malt and a little bit of toffee. Low to medium bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: A ton of yeast floating around. Very cloudy and dirty red color. A small white head and not much lace.
S: Fairly neutral. Some citrus hops and a light grainy malt aroma for balance.
T: Some citrus, but more of a grapefruit bitterness here. Good balance, the bitterness never gets out of hand. A nice balanced malt backbone as well. Some sweetness, bread, and biscuit.
M/D: A medium body with good carbonation. Crisp, dry, smooth, and clean. Easy enough to drink.

Decent for the most part. Not a bad beer at all, just the dirty yeast appearance makes it hard for me to come back to this. I can't say that I would grab this over the other good craft beers on tap here.

Chilled growler poured into a stemless tulip pint, originally pulled from a keg that was filled on 4.9.12 and picked up from the brewery on 4.11.12. I enjoyed plenty straight from the keg, but this portion was set aside for reviewing in a better setting.

Appearance- Pours a clear deep amber/amber-brown with about half a finger of sudsy head that falls quickly. There's a few traces of lace left as the glass empties - about what I'd expect after the handling.

Smell- Sweet orange peel, toffee, fir boughs, and touches of roasty malt. The rye is definitely present in the nose, and comes through as... well, rye; but it blends extremely well with everything else and lends an interesting spicy richness to the whole thing. Nose much bolder that I was expecting after the less-than-ideal handling and lack of head.

Taste- Follows the nose. Rich malt barely balances the citrusy and grassy hops, and the rye adds a darker spicy flavor to the whole thing. Starts with tangerine and pine before transitioning to bready toasted malt, with the citrus hanging on throughout, developing an interesting woody character partway through. Wouldn't really call it oaky or smoky, but it reminds me of lightly burnt green boughs like you would use to toast food over a campfire. Finishes spicy with a lingering grassy bitterness. There's actually quite a bit going on here, and the combination is something special, to be sure. Tasty, bold, hits all the right notes for an AIPA, and manages not to go overboard in any flavor category.

Mouthfeel- Medium body, moderate carbonation. Crisp, with a clean, slightly dry finish. Exceptionally drinkable, I could drink more than a few pints.

Overall- I have to say that I've been to Black Star a few times now, but have shied away from their lighter beers after mediocre experiences at other brewpubs. I was quite pleasantly surprised by both their Vulcan and High Esteem delivered via pony keg, however, and I hope that they keep doing whatever it is they're doing. I think there were more than a few craft and/or IPA converts at the event I attended thanks to this beer. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a bold but balanced AIPA with a little more complexity than usual.
