I featured Vulcan in Episode 2 of Locapour: http://locapour.tv/austin/blackstarcoopvulcan

This is a fantastic beer for an evening when you are feeling the need for hops and want to get your money's worth on the ABV front. What I really enjoy about this beer however is its drinkability. It's not overly hopped and the addition of the rye seems to mellow it out.

The color is beautiful. If you happen to be drinking it where you can let the sunlight kiss the glass you can really see the Vulcan, God of Fire come through.

Judging by previous reviews, the latest incarnation may have been tweeked for the better. I was surprise to find out that Saaz hops are used for the aromatics, as the aroma is predominately pine, with a healthy amount of caramel and a hint of rye. Copper colored and hazy, there was nice head retention and plenty of lace. Big bodied, the flavor was similar in characteristics to the aroma, with a greater amount of rye and good balance between the hops and malt. Medium carbonation.

Chilled growler poured into a stemless tulip pint, originally pulled from a keg that was filled on 4.9.12 and picked up from the brewery on 4.11.12. I enjoyed plenty straight from the keg, but this portion was set aside for reviewing in a better setting.

Appearance- Pours a clear deep amber/amber-brown with about half a finger of sudsy head that falls quickly. There's a few traces of lace left as the glass empties - about what I'd expect after the handling.

Smell- Sweet orange peel, toffee, fir boughs, and touches of roasty malt. The rye is definitely present in the nose, and comes through as... well, rye; but it blends extremely well with everything else and lends an interesting spicy richness to the whole thing. Nose much bolder that I was expecting after the less-than-ideal handling and lack of head.

Taste- Follows the nose. Rich malt barely balances the citrusy and grassy hops, and the rye adds a darker spicy flavor to the whole thing. Starts with tangerine and pine before transitioning to bready toasted malt, with the citrus hanging on throughout, developing an interesting woody character partway through. Wouldn't really call it oaky or smoky, but it reminds me of lightly burnt green boughs like you would use to toast food over a campfire. Finishes spicy with a lingering grassy bitterness. There's actually quite a bit going on here, and the combination is something special, to be sure. Tasty, bold, hits all the right notes for an AIPA, and manages not to go overboard in any flavor category.

Mouthfeel- Medium body, moderate carbonation. Crisp, with a clean, slightly dry finish. Exceptionally drinkable, I could drink more than a few pints.

Overall- I have to say that I've been to Black Star a few times now, but have shied away from their lighter beers after mediocre experiences at other brewpubs. I was quite pleasantly surprised by both their Vulcan and High Esteem delivered via pony keg, however, and I hope that they keep doing whatever it is they're doing. I think there were more than a few craft and/or IPA converts at the event I attended thanks to this beer. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a bold but balanced AIPA with a little more complexity than usual.

On-tap at Black Star

A: Single fingered head with decent retention, frothy in nature leaving behind some lacing tops this fairly transparent deep orange, slightly amber bodied brew.

S: Pungent floral and pine scents up front are backed nicely with rye and a sugary malt backbone.

T: West coast IPA is what initially comes to mind. Unfortunately the high level of hops overwhelm the other ingredients leaving this beer to be good, but largely unbalanced.

M: Medium bodied for the style, fair carbonation.

O: A pretty good beer. Better than the food I had. Don't know when I will be back, but I'm sure I will be.
