I made a special trip to the Beer Growler as I was at a meeting 45 miles away and they had Wild Heaven Eschaton available in growlers. I am very glad I went. The location is fairly easy to find (especially with GPS!) and the place, while small, has a nice feel.
The service was first rate. I was made to feel welcome.
They have a great selection with 25 beers on draft. They do have a relatively small selection of bottles but make up for it with quality brews. Their glassware selection was great and very inexpensive particularly considering there was no added shipping cost.
The easy going vibe goes well with the college town atmosphere, however, no drunken frat boys detracted from the experience.
I fully enjoyed the visit and came away with great beer, great glassware and a nice drive through the Georgia countryside. A good day indeed.

The Beer Growler is my favorite place for filling my growlers. The store itself is small, but it is plenty big enough for its purpose. The staff is always very attentive and helpful. As another reviewer stated, the glass selection is great and priced low enough that I make a point to pick up a new glass every time I visit. The Beer Growler staff knows what good beer is, and they keep an assortment of great beers on tap from most styles of beer. My typical routine is to check their website (which is great) and see what they are currently offering. I'll run their current offerings through Beeradvocate and make my selection for the weekend. Great place in a great town.

Went to The Beer Growler a while back, and wasn't very impressed. The place is obviously a mediocre facsimile of the Charleston Beer Exchange. The only real difference is that while GBX is run by two guys who are devoted to craft beer and truly love every aspect of beer culture, these guys seem to be only in it for the money to be made from craft beer's recent popularity hike. They have very little in the way of knowledge, and their bottle selection is sparse. There are some bars in Athens that have more bottles than this place. I will not be back to this place, and I will continue to give my business to the reason craft beer is in Athens: Five Points Bottle Shop.

The Beer Growler is a new store on Baxter St. here in Athens, GA. They have a great selection of beer available on tap as well as in bottles, 4 packs and six packs. They also have a small selection of glassware for sale. The owners are very friendly and knowledgeable and even suggested a few mixes that might be good. As of now they are only open until 8 PM Thursday-Saturday and 7 PM Monday- Wednesday but one of the owners said that might change depending on the demand. I would highly recommend checking out The Beer Growler because you can get great beer at very reasonable prices, it's much cheaper than going downtown!

Last night, we had the pleasure of visiting a Georgia first...The Beer Growler--a shop that actually sells and refills growlers! Unfortunately, we missed most of the action as we arrived fairly late, but this gave us a great opportunity to meet the three owners-Denny Young, Paul Saunders and Sean Galvin. Immediately gracious and accommodating, they explained how the growler process works and how they managed to open the first growler bar in the state. We were given a quick tour of their cooler and not only do they have a phenomenal list of brews on tap right now---get ready Athens---more of some very special kegs are on backup! They also have an excellent selection of bottles and glassware, including our favorite, the Duvel tulip for sale. Due to expected issues with any opening involving draught lines, they opted for a soft opening but ended up being so busy, they didn't have time to actually finish the price tags for the beer bottles!

Now, on to the point of all of this, the growlers themselves and what was available. The growler (aka the glass jug) is a one time purchase of $4 and then you pay to fill it up. After you finish your brew, bring back your old for a re-fill, they swap it out, and on you go. Not only does this insure you're getting some of the freshest beer to go (since you can't buy directly from a brewery in GA), but you're saving money by not having to pay for the brewery's packaging and shipping costs that normally get passed on to you. So we were able to pick up 64 ounces of Rogue's Old Crustacean Barleywine for $17 and 64 ounces of Terrapin's Monk's Revenge for $10! The other very cool bonus with growlers is you can take them with you on trips outside of GA where the breweries actually do growler fills.

While we had a great time chatting with the owners and checking out the new shop, we were anxious to get home with our goodies and try our first GA growler from The Beer Growler. Do yourself a favor and head there tomorrow and get in line for some of the delicious choices!
