12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.
Appearance: Pours near black with ruby highlights and a thin off-white head.
Smell: Roasted malt, chocolate, and caramel. Very good roasted malt presence, which I love to see in a porter.
Taste: Roasted malt, dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, roasted malt. In case you needed further clarification, this has a lot of roasted malt. Exactly how I like my porters. Finish is bittersweet chocolate with a very slight acidic twang (along with more roasted malt).
Mouthfeel: The only thing that comes off a bit weak in this beer. It's fairly watery. A little bit more body would stand up to the heavy roast character a bit better in my opinion. Medium carbonation. Dry finish.
Overall: This was the first beer from Flat 12 I ever tried, and it impressed me in a big way. One of the better porters on the market in my opinion.

Unknown vintage; drank 8/1/15 @ the Family Compound.
Brown appearance.
Khaki head; frothy lace.
Coffee, cream, milk chocolate & dill pickle notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Creamed coffee flavor up front; dill pickle notes on the finish.
An odd pair, but at least this is drinkable.

Poured from bottle into pint glass, comes out almost looking like a Coke, with a half-finger of off white head. It's pretty carbonated too, with a hint of red colour around the edges in the light. Nose is predominantly of chocolate, with nice hints of toffee and coffee too. Only thing that keeps this beer from getting a max score on the smell is I wish the malt came through a bit more. The malt does come thru in the taste, along with the coffee flavour, with the chocolate from the nose pushed to the back end taste-wise. The carbonation, which had me a tad worried at first glance, is virtually a non-factor. This is an exceptionally smooth porter. Good on ya to the folks at Flat 12!

12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass
A - Har pour produces a 1 finger head in height that is a dark khaki in color and a creamy foam in appearance. The head dissipates fairly slowly. The beer itself is black and opaque with moderate carbonation visible around the edges in the form of tiny bubbles rising quickly toward the surface. 3.75/5
S - Toasted wheat bread, cold pressed coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, and a very light caramel come out and form a sweet but "watery" aroma that is a bit subdued. A bit of savory roast comes out. There is a bit of raw graininess as well that adds an earthy element to the aroma. 3.75/5
T - Cold pressed coffee and cocoa powder explode on the palate right away along with just a hint of caramel. Dark roasted malted barley comes out very strongly with just a hint of vanilla in the middle of the flavor profile. Lingering espresso bitterness as well as grapefruit peel bitterness on the finish last for quite some time along with a bit of grassy hops. 4/5
M - Hefty carbonation burn throughout the entire profile makes for a lighter bodied porter, much more sessionable in nature than many porters. 4/5
O - Well balanced between sweet and bitter with quite a long drawn out bitter finish but this is not unpleasant, especially for a coffee drinker. Sessionable porter that is lighter than most porters and feels like an older style porter. Not overly complex but it doesn't really need to be to get these strong flavors across 3.75/5
