Poured to perfection on the nitro tap at The Pint in West Lafayette. Huge creamy tan head that tasted almost like vanilla ice cream. Smell was deep and roasty. Taste was creamy, chocolatey, and had a bit of roast. Really well balanced and drinkable milk stout. Not sure how it would be without the nitro tap, but it was fantastic on nitro. At 5% ABV, this would be a go-to for me if it was local. Definitely a beer that you could suggest to a person that enjoys Guinness.

A-Clear amber when pouring, black in the glass but clear around the edges. Not much carbonation or head.

S-Roasted malt, some smoke, very slight oats, tad chocolate. Not getting the sweet lactose smell I'd expect.

T-Roasted malt, some sweetness via the lactose but not much. Some chocolate. Not much else. For a sweet stout this isn't that sweet.

M-Lighter, not much carbonation and almost watery.

O-Was expecting more. Doesn't have the sweet flavor of a milk stout but the rest of the beer doesn't hold up that well either.

Pours a dark brown (nearly black) with ruby highlights into my Founders Breakfast Stout glassware. Carbonation is nonexistent. No head, no lace, no happy.

Aroma is pleasing, though. I get chocolate. Certainly no problem there.

Taste is, at first, bittersweet chocolate. There's an undercurrent of char in there, as well as a tinge of dark fruit underneath it all. Drinks very smoothly, and this is a solid milk stout, but not exceptional.

12oz bottle from zrab11 (thanks Zach!). It's hard to read but I think it was bottled in 10/2013. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

Pours dark like black tea with an eighth finger cream hued head. Not much retention but a good bit of lace.

Smells of lactose, cocoa and dark malts.

Taste follows the nose. Lactose sweetness, milk chocolate, creamed coffee and roasty malt.

Light feel but just enough body to come across as creamy. Very little carbonation. Roasty malts and chocolate milk linger in the aftertaste.

A no frills, straight forward milk stout. Solid but nothing ground breaking.

An Indianapolis beer before the Colts game – cheers!

A: Dark, dark brown, like black coffee. Slight dusting of tan head: very little retention and lacing.

S: A nose of alluring cookies and cream: milk chocolate, creamy vanilla, and fresh-ground coffee. Smells decadent and delicious.

T: Chalky mineral water and chocolate milk? Yeah, it tastes a bit strange. Besides that oddity, though, there are tastes of vanilla, Hershey’s chocolate, char, and a hint of herbal, minty hops. The finish is lightly metallic, along with that undeniable lactose aftertaste: buttery, with a creamy banana sweetness.

M: Low carbonation with a milky texture, a feel that’s just about pub-style.

O: This is a good beer in small amounts, but finishing the bottle is not happening. It’s cloyingly sweet with some odd tastes, but overall, this is a tasty beer. That said, though, I doubt I’ll be drinking it again anytime soon.

Dark brownish black color, spotty lace and a thin layer of foam that doesn't last long.

Subdued aromas of chocolate, banana, and a light sweetness.

Smooth and creamy with a light, easy drinking feel, chocolatey and roasty without being overly sweet. Aftertaste is slightly dry and roasty. Overall a nice little milk stout.

Thanks to Howard for this one!

Growler lugged over by CWBlues, into a tulip. Thanks again Cy!

Dark brown/black with minimal tan-brown head. Mild retention and a bit of lace. Nose of cold coffee, darker chocolate and good roast notes. Taste had more roast and coffee but on the lighter nicer side of things. Light sourness from the roast and roast bitterness into the finish slightly lighter medium body and lower carb. A solid milk stout, would be fantastic on nitro.

Pours very thick with a moist luxurious head. The smells is sweet and creamy. Very good mouth feel adding to the creaminess. Very subtle alcohol flavor. Had on nitro-tap at the brewery. Very impressed with the overall character of this sweet-stout. I would suggest getting this on nitro if possible. A meal of a beer that will satisfy any stout lover or any beer lover for that matter.

Poured from growler into CBS 22 oz. snifter.

Not completely black, almost soda-like in color. Cream tan head, with OK retention but stellar lacing.

Aroma of sweet milk, warming caramel. Nothing too over the top but very fantastic.

Tastes is caramel/toffee popcorn, milk chocolate, faint butterscotch that is permissible with the toffee popcorn taste.

Goes down super smooth. Not cloying but certainly sweeter, yet more alcoholy, than other milk stouts I've tried. Too drinkable! AHH! Lingering sweetness that pulls me back in in an elusive search for that Flat 12 hopping I'm used to.

Overall, pretty effin' solid. Will Try again.

Great stout. It's extremely well balanced. Good maltiness and a slight bitterness but it had a nice balance of sweetness to it that make it a good sipper. I got a decent amount of coffee on this one both in the nose and the palate. Chocolate came through the taste as well. The mouth feel is great, it is a hearty beer with a good body to it.

Had a pint of this at Britton Tavern in Noblesville.

Poured a dark, almost black opaque color. Quarter inch tan head on top. Left some good lacing on the glass. Nose didn't detect a lot of aromas. Some roasted malts, maybe a subtle hint of coffee but little from the nose.

Taste is better than the nose. As it warmed a bit, flavors came out more. Slight coffee, roasted malt flavors throughout. Sweeter taste though. Medium to full body. Low carbonation. Very smooth drink.

Overall a good milk stout. Not to sweet, with good flavors present. Would love to go back and have some more of these some night.

Pint poured fresh at the brewery.

Pours nice, 90% opaque ruby with a small brown head.

Smells like a *ton* of sweet sugar. Aromawise, this is the milkiest milk stout I've ever come across. Not all that much balance--I can't tell if the dark barley is exceptionally unbitter, or if the sweetness is just that overwhelming.

First taste is boffo. The sweetness is large and in charge but backed up decently by bitter malt. As I kept sipping, however, the sweetness just got to be too much; it overwhelmed the barley, then my tongue, and by the time I was 3/4ths through my lips were sticky. It was weird.

Two words to describe this beer: Cloyingly maltodextrous. Real good in small doses, but not the best beer to try and down a pint of.

EDIT:
Recent vintages have improved significantly.

Stopped by after a trip to Indy last Sunday (7-3-11). After running through the gammit of beer samples that they had on tap, this was my absolute favorite. I'm a huge fan of heavy beers and milk stouts are near the top of my favorites list. And I have to say that this was the best milk stout I have ever had the privilege of drinking! Ordered a pint and enjoyed with a few slices of the grilled pizza being served out back of the place.

Since it was served in a plastic cup, which definitely isn't the ideal drinking vessel, I can't really go on about the lacing. Poured a deep, dark brown with a slight deep tan head. Smell was that of rich milk chocolate, sweet creme, toasted malts. Taste was everything I just mentioned with slight coffee, caramel, and toffee in the background. Everything a good milk stout should be!

Seriously, this is the new gold standard for milk stouts! I just hope they start bottling this and get it out to distributers so I don't have to drive all the way to Indianapolis to get more!

Milk stouts are either my favorite or second favorite style, depending on what day you talk to me. Flat 12's was the second I'd ever had - the first being Left Hand.

Color, aroma, and mouthfeel are right on target for a milk stout. Dark in color, nearly black. Smells of dark roasted malts, a little coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is very creamy.

I'm not sure which I like better. Flat 12 is a local brewery, so it's nice to be supporting the "Local Guy." Left Hand makes good beer, but they're a larger more commercial operation, located in CO - far away from me.

So... I'm going to drink Flat 12's when I want a milk stout. :D

Deep brown with some red bricking at the edges and a light tan head rises to half an inch, dense and creamy leaving thin sticky lace behind.

Fantastic aromas emanating from this milk stout. Lactose, un-malted barley, roasted malt, coffee, milk chocolate, honey, prune, burnt caramel, light smoke, red currant and hints of rhubarb.

Tried this at the brewery straight form the teet and it's tasting just as good in my 2 day old growler. Sweet lactose, mocha, milk chocolate, heavy cream, unmalted barley, burnt caramel, toffee, some dark and dried fruit flavors, long finish. Finish is sweet at first and than dried out quickly from coffee and some earthy hops. Just delicious, creamy, full bodied and asking you to drink more. I believe ABV is 4.5 or 5 if memory serves correctly.

By far their best beer. Had a sample at the brewery. Pours a dark dark brown, with a large creamy brown head that persisted (on nitro). Aroma was sweet maltiness, rich roast, and a hint of coffee. Flavors were rich, sweet, roasty malt, coffee-like flavors. Body was on the medium-light side. They had about 12 beers available for sampling and I ran through the entire list and this one was heads above the rest.

Pours a wonderfully dark brown to near black, with some nice white head and a bit of decent lacing. Nice sweet and roasty scent; slight coffee tones with a wonderful sugar aroma. Very good flavors, with a nice roasted grain and an excellent sweetness at the back, with a bit of fairly neutral English (I think) hops at the back. Goes down extremely smooth and balanced.
