Had on tap a couple different pours...I freakin love this stuff!
A- Pours a light hazed golden color. One finger white head shows medium retention. Nice streaks of lace left on the glass.
S- There is some light citrus notes on the front end of the aroma. These are not allowed to get any stronger before a light wheat/biscuity malt comes through. The peppers show off a spice in the backend of the aroma that is a nice secondary aroma. The heat though could be smelled which I thought had a light almost peppercorn aroma to it.
T- Upon first sip the citrus hops are little more tame than in the aroma letting a light wheat not share about the same flavorwise with them in the front. The middle shows off a light biscuity flavor which actually acts like a palate cleanser for the backend of the beer. Starting with the ending middle and lasting through the very end is spicey pepper. This is both in heat and flavor with a hint of peppercorn in the very back. The alcohol blends with the heat very well adding its own little twist to this beer. No real hops are detected in the ending as the pepper kind of numbs the senses in the backend.
M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the style. Light biscuity malts with pepper spice, and peppercorn left on the palate. Aftertaste is alcohol and pepper heat, peppercorn and not much else. Flavors were broken into two parts but worked well together. No off flavors could be detected while drinking. Heavy alcohol drying on the palate..which I think the peppers have a bit to do with it.
O- Overall I thought this has been one of my favorite chili beers to date. The heat wasn't too much but packed a little more punch than most. The ABV wasn't a problem by any means but it did add to the pepper like hotness. Overall I thought a great beer from Flat 12. Keep up the good work guys!

The beer was sampled on tap at the Illiana Mayfest on 5/26/2012.
This was a changed of pace for a brewery with a focus on porters. The beer was poured into a sampler glass showing a pale golden color with a generous white head. The most notable note in the aroma was burst of pepper. It was not a burning smell, but you would certainly know the peppers are present. The initial impression is the smoothness of this beer. The bite of pepper jumps as the first taste before it is smoothed out by the vanilla. The vanilla notes give a hint of bourbon before the spice returns in the after taste. This is a smooth and well balanced chile beer. It is another impressive effort by Flat 12.
