Growler filled this past Saturday.

Van Pogue pours a medium bodied dark chocolate brown in color with a two finger, dark khaki foamy head. The nose is rich and roasty with some bitter baking chocolate and with more coffee character than I normally get out of the regular Pogue's Run. There is just a subtle touch of vanilla in the nose but certainly not as much as I expected. The flavors are rich and dry. It has a good amount of that bitter chocolate and coffee roast with a subtle amount of vanilla in the aftertaste. Perhaps the biggest difference between this treatment and the base beer is that this one drinks much drier than the original. Overall it was a nice beer but I'd like to see a little more vanilla. If you like the regular, definitely try this one out.

On tap at Flat 12.

Appearance: Pours black with a very thin off-white head, receding after about a minute into an off-white lacing.

Smell: Vanilla and oak up front with a hefty dose of roasted malt following it up. A bit of caramel in there as well. The vanilla sweetness is balanced very well with the roast.

Taste: Similar to the smell, but with a bit more intensity. The vanilla and roasted malt work very well - Pogue's Run is definitely on the "roastier" end of the porter spectrum, which means it doesn't get overly sweet with the hefty dose of vanilla. The oak also provides a great complement to the vanilla flavor. Finish is bittersweet and quite smooth. No apparent alcohol flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light-bodied. Appropriately low carbonation level. Has a very smooth, silky feel as it goes down. Very easy drinking.

Overall: Another great beer from Flat 12. Pogue's Run is one of the better porters out there in my opinion, and the addition of vanilla and oak improve it even more.
