A buddy of mine lives in the old section of New Castle about 150 yards away from Jessop's.
Very nice feel to this place warm and inviting. The whole theme of the place was very nice. Everyone dressed up in colonial attire. Seemed to be just a fun atmosphere to be at.
A tight fit but that's what makes it all the better. A stairwell in front of you leads to another dining area upstairs. Tight fit to make it through the downstairs area to the bar. Looking at the taps and to my surprise not one macro only in bottles. Bottles Westmalle dubbel and tripel were on the shelving behind the bar as well as some other extremely rare Belgian beers(don't rememeber what).
I took a Evolution no.3 which was exceptional. Then I have to say the barkeep was not on the up and up. A couple of us (4 in our party) had empty glasses for about 15 mins. I can understand if we were eating and dining but sitting right in front of the taps and we must have been past thirty times before he got to us. I understand he was the only bartender but the patrons at the bar which there was only enough room for probably ten of us. Were being taken care of last. On top of that the man seemed nasty and replied with a "What do ya want?" and I understand if there is a rush but how about being a bit more pleasant to the customer's. After all we are paying.
Selection was nice Evolution 3,Sam adams noble pils, and revolutionary rye,Gonzo imperial porter,90 min,and few other goodies. All and all a solid place but not to good on service.

My wife took me here a couple years ago for our first date and we made a point of going as much as possible before moving to AL. Jessop's has to be our favorite spot in northern DE. Food is great and so is the service. Everyone is really nice when you go in. So many times when I've entered a small local tavern the locals give you dirty looks if they don't know you and the bartender isn't very friendly at first (At least this is the case in DE). Not so at Jessop's The bartenders are very helpful and know their stuff. None of the beer on tap is macro and I'm not sure but I believe the last time I was in there the bartender told me they try to only keep rare beers not served anywhere close by. I've even heard of them pulling a beer off the shelf as soon as they catch wind of another establishment serving the same one. Over all Jessop's is a great historical experience and a good spot to hit if you just want to have a drink with some friends with out all the noise and crowd of an average bar.

Jessop's tavern was built in 1674. The business was started in 1724. Great selection of local seasonal beers on tap. No macro beer taps. Good selection of Belgian beer in bottles. If you are the area check it out. I was there for lunch today. On tap; Flying Fish Gonzo Imperial Porter, Dogfish Head 90 minute, Victory Hop Devil, Affligem Blonde, Troges Mad Elf, Evolution IPA, Twin Lakes Pale Ale, plus 5 other taps.
Family friendly (might want to keep the stroller outside, it isn't a huge place). Waitstaff are dressed in Colonial dress. New Castle was the first Capitol of Delaware. While you are in the area you can walk to several historic sites and state parks.
