This is an excellent wine/spirits/beer bar in Carbondale. One of the more upscale places in town. A small, but nice patio out front that is semi covered. The interior is separated off into a couple of rooms. A smallish dinning room, that is also used for parties. Then the bar area is through the door to the left. There are wood tables around the bar, with some artwork on the wall, and a few stone fireplaces. there are no TV's, and some jazz playing low. It is a very cozy and warm vibe without being pretentious at all. A very relaxing place especially when the fires are roaring on the cold winter night that I visited. What a nice break from all the crappy club like joints and sports bars that are all over this college town. They also have food, but I have yet to try it.
The service is attentive, enthusiastic, friendly, and knowledgeable. The bartender was excited about getting in some new Belgian beers, and we talk a little about them.
On to the beer. Unfortunately there are no taps, but the bottle selection is really exceptional. At least 40 bottles, and almost all are high quality American crafts or high end imports. I enjoyed some New Holland Golden Cap, and Summit India Rye Ale. I was really excited to try both. A few Bells, Founders, Goose Island, and Schlafly. About 3-4 Southern Tier offerings, and other good crafts. Westmalle, Rocchefort, and Chimay for good Belgians. Some UK beers like Traquair, and some Germans like Weihenstephaner. Overall I don't usually give out good selection scores for just bottles, but I think they have done a really good job. There is a nice beer list, with descriptions of all the beers and styles. A nice touch. No problems with quality. They have good turn over on their beers, with correct glassware, and serving temps. They really care about the quality of their products here. Not just beer, but wine and spirits as well.
Overall, an excellent place to have a few beers. I can hang out here all night. There are plenty of dive bars around town, not very many places like this though. I wish this place would have opened up when I still lived in town.
