This beer was freakin fantastic!

A: Rich brown nut color. Great head retention and mild lacing.

S: Malty sweet with fruity aroma.

T: Wow, you would not know it was 7%. Completely masked in sweet candi sugared goodness. A great achievement.

M: Stayed sweet on the tongue and didnt burn as mentioned of the abv.

D: Would get a growler of this in a heartbeat!

A - Brown beer with some red highlights. Large head that had decent retention and some nice lacing.

S - Smells of caramel, brown sugar, raisins, other dark fruit. A little bit of alcohol and some almost cough syrupy notes.

T - Tastes of caramel, brown sugar, and an interesting peanuty taste. There is some light fruit in there and some yeast and spices.

M - Medium bodied, lower carbonation.

O - Has some off flavors in it, but it's not horrible. Not a beer I'd be lkely to have again on my next visit.

Served in a tulip glass at the brewpub.

Wait, is this a reference to the magazine? Right on... It pours a clear copper-sienna topped by a finger of dusty cream-white foam. The nose comprises caramel, toffee, biscuit, clove, light black pepper, very light cinnamon, and some very light orange zest. The taste brings in more of the same, though with an increased orange zest character and a touch of what seems like straw. The Belgian character is really toned-down, an afterthought. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, an okay dubbel, but one that strays a bit too far from convention for my liking. The only real vestige of the Belgian yeast is a slightly overdone bit of spiciness, and the hops o'erwhelm whatever else could be lying beneath.

This is my favorite offering of the Haymarket brews that I've tried. The flavor evokes a melange of dark fruit, anise and hazelnut; the yeast notes are equally distributed between spicy and fruit. Concord grape notes are yielded by the nose more than any spice. Really nice creamy feel, easy drinking, quite nice overall.

Solid, well balanced beer with quality ingredients. Tasted much like a doppelbock (1516?) in that it had a toasty caramel smell, sweet finish, and not too complex like some of the abbey ales can be. Not being a "hophead", this is my choice on the menu and I could drink many of these. Keep them coming and the neighbors will be right-happy!

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.

A - Hazed caramel brown body, with a finger of white foam that settles to a thin cap and thicker collar, leaving lots of sticky lines of lacework.

S - Candi sugar, dark fruits, some slightly odd medicinal spices and a hint of estery alcohol.

T - Bready, candi sugar, some berries, spicy Belgian yeast. It's a pleasant, but pretty standard Belgian dubbel. Less medicinal and boozy in the flavor.

M - Medium-bodied, with some graininess, medium-low carbonation, and a slightly sticky and tannic finish.

D - It's pleasant, but I don't think I'd want more than one of these in an evening. If you dig Dubbels though, this is a pretty convincing American take on the style.

On tap at the brewpub...A light to medium hazy ugly brown body, just not enticing to me. The head is nice, lots of lacing...The aroma is very sweet, too much candi sugar, sweet plums, yeast, dark fruits, has a weird spicey medicinal finish that is medicinal yet sweet, just don't get it...The taste is more of the same, too sweet, more yeast and spices that are off. Dark fruits and raisins balance this a little better than the nose.

This is an average dubbel. I probably wouldn't have it again unless I heard the recipe changed.

Half finger head, minimal lacing on a clear amber body. Sweet caramel malts, molasses, dark fruit, mostly cherry. Flavor actually has a lot of oak and bourbon. Sweet caramel malts, sour cherry a d earthy hops as well. Medium body and moderate carbonation. This is way too sour for the style. Also the belgian character is weak.
