Beer added by: beertooth on 01-23-2011

In honor of Officer Mathias Degan, the first of 8 of Chicago's Finest to lose their lives in the line of duty during the Haymarket Affair. Copious amounts of Citra Hops deliver wonderful citrus and mango notes. At 10% ABV, we feel Mathias is a proper representation of the strength and courage of our Boys in Blue. Raise one to thank the fine Officers of the Chicago Police Department for their sacrifice.

Citralicious fruity hops.
The new gold standard in DIPA -- I am spoilled for all others.
You need to have this fresh at the brewpub and it is glorious.
If you are a hop person -- you will love it.

Even if you do not think you are a hop person -- try this one. For those who are coming from the dark side (bocks, imp stouts and belgians) as they enter the beer scene -- this citrus hop bomb has enough fruit and sweetness to turn their palates.

A really world class beer -- worth the trip to chicago alone. Lucky for you there are many other good things to drink once you are here...

Beautiful glowing color, and the wafting of fruity hops greets you. The taste follows through with everything the appearance promises. Great body too.

finally, a local, fresh substitute for zombie dust! the only problem is it's $27 a growler plus $5 for the initial one. When your growler pricing is more than 3 floyds, you may want to rethink some things.
A: orangeish light amber. decent white head and lacing. light haze.
S: delicious citra hops-citrus and tropical fruit, above a honeyed, doughy malt base.
T: follows suit. medium to full sweet malts perfectly balanced by smooth, juicy hop bitterness and flavors.
M: at 10%, obviously bigger bodied than zombie dust. carbonation seems a bit light against this more viscous mouthfeel.
O: hell yeah. i was planning on sharing the growler i brought home, but will be selfish.

Had on tap during the WBEZ tasting

A) Golden Copper color with a two finger head, cloudy some visible nucleation.

S) When the bartender handed it to me I could smell while it was still in his hands. Citrus fruits, dank, honey, bread, very sweet smelling beer.

T) Citrus, skittles, honey, bread, very tasty can't taste the alcohol at all.

M) creamy and juicey medium amount of carbonation

O) Absolutly great! Reminds me of Clown Shoes Galatica or Piepworks Citra Ninja.

Cloudy but bright orange beer with prominent lacing. Smells like a tropical hop explosion and tastes like it too--my boyfriend thought this was the best beer he had all year, and we don't usually like Citra, so that's saying something. A very rich and juicy tropical hop flavor, mango, bubble-gum, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, just a touch of caramel malt, with a thick mouthfeel.

My notes mostly just say "wow" again and again... best imperial IPA ever? It may well be.

A: Dark coppery color, very little head. Looks very smooth.

S: Quite hoppy, but also sweet. Smells slightly of lemons and grapefruit.

T: Definitely a bit of grapefruit, with a good amound of hoppy bitterness. Quite tasty. The sweetness and bitterness is excellently balanced.

M: Very smooth. Not much carbonation and little creamy. I could drink this all night. Really nice. Can't even taste the alcohol, and 10.00% that is pretty impressive

O: This is very good American IPA. It has anything anyone would want in this style of beer.

During my vacation in Chicago, I tried to hit all the craft brew places. Haymarket was the one I hit last-minute.... and boy am I glad I did (because of this beer)

What an amazing concept of "East Coast" meets "West Coast." Particularly the taste: It starts out super tropical fruity-- mango, grapefruit and pineapple. Citra hops are obviously top-notch. But then on the finish, a vivid piney-ness, hints of onion and garlic settle in.

Simply a marvelous beer. Go out of your way to try it.

Had on tap at Haymarket.

Hazy orange color. Not much of a head.

Strong sweet citrus smell.

Heavy tropical taste. Grapefruit flavor throughout. When I drank it, I thought there was no way that this beer is 10% ABV.

Wow, this is an amazing beer which I will definitely enjoy in the future.

16 oz. draft at The Haymarket

I can't give this beer a proper review, since I had it over a bachelor party weekend in Chicago and didn't take notes. But I felt the need to expand on my rating. Mathias was simply amazing. In a 3-day binge of a wide variety of craft beers of all shapes and sizes, this one stood out as deserving individual recognition. I suppose it should be noted that I've had my first Pliny The Elder and Heady Topper within the last month. Mathias left a bigger and better impression than both.

VERY citrus forward with plenty of tropical fruit and floral notes. Juicy, sticky, and just enough piney bitterness to give it some bite. Easily the smoothest 10% DIPA I've ever had. Possibly the best as well. If you are in Chicago I cannot recommend The Haymarket highly enough.

This is an incredible beer.

A: Amber through and through. Slightly hazy with great head retention and mild to heavy lacing. Off white head of foam.

S: MANGO!!! Grassy earthy tones with heavy heavy fruity waves.

T: Umm delicious? Malty but packing plenty of a kick with the hop level. 10% was masked well with the thickness of this beer. Hop heaven.

M: So thick and gunky! Just as it should be, enamel scrapingly heavy. Rests in the pockets, tongue and throat.

D: Went back to back with this, simply the best.

Growler purchased at the pub (of course) and opened at home the same evening. Poured into my new favorite glass, my Half Acre tulip.

A - Pours a deep copper w orange highlights and a foamy eggshell head of 3 fingers which dissipates after a few minutes to a collar w decent legs. Patchy lacing.

S - Redolent of citrus and pine w a hint of baked apples, blood oranges, and fresh-cut grass. Sweetbread and smooth caramel in support. Smells like an IIPA oughta.

T - Grapefruit, orange juice, and pine nuts explode up front. Pineapple and dreamsicle follow, then the malt asserts itself w buttery caramel and the slightest hint of glazed cinnamon rolls. Citric and earthy bitterness abounds throughout, finish is long and bittersweet.

M and O - Medium body, sticky w hop resin and an oily finish.

Mathias is an incredible brew, easily the best IIPA made in Chicago, and on par w the best of the region (Dreadnaught and Hopslam). Well worth a trip to Randolph and Halsted.

A- Orange, thin head that disappears quickly (white)
S- Hop overload! Ripe tropical fruitiness
Taste - Really nice citrussy hops. You know you are drinking a very big beer, but not in an unpleasant way at all. It is just big and bitter, but also juicy.
M- Really full feeling, but also crisp and fresh with decent carbonation. Like I said in the taste, there is no doubt you are drinking a huge beer, but bitterness and alcohol are not unpleasant because of the juiciness and sweetness of the citrus flavor.

Overall: Great beer. This beer is THE reason to go to Haymarket so far...

Enjoying on tap at Haymarket, on the cusp of the Blizzard of 2011, talking to a cute bartender.

A: Looks great. A cloudy dark orange.

S: Smells incredible. Mangos and peaches jump out of the glass and race up my nostril. Can't wait to taste it.

T: Wow! This is impressive. The mango and peach shine through. It's hoppy but not bitter. Excellent.

M: Medium body, nicely carbonated. Has a smooth, almost buttery feel.

D: Incredibly drinkable. Hard to believe its 10% ABV.

I hope I get snowed in here today!

On tap at Haymarket on 9/19/14.

Unfortunately for this beer, I had it side-by-side with the fresh hop version. It lost in that battle. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that this was an excellent beer. It has a great citrus hop nose, lots of complexity and juiciness in the flavor and a dry bitter-sweet finish.

Showed up in front of me in a tasting glass with a medium bubbles. Smells of citrus pervade, a lot pink grapefruit and pine. Lots of malt in the first taste, but laced throughout are citrus, and more pink grapefruit. A surprisingly light body, with a hint of the alcohol in the finish, lots of citrus too.
-awesome smell, love citra hops. Reminds me of Zombie Dust, which is great. Citrus, grapefruit mango, a bit of pine as well.

This is a fantastic example of an imperial IPA. If you get to haymarket, just hope they're brewing Mathias!!

Bam! This poured a golden color with generous foam. There’s a big, assertive yet floral hop aroma. Smacked me around and I liked it. Gloriously chewy, thick hop flavor. Lots of grassy hops, like the extract from a freshly cut lawn. Or evergreen forest. Loved it!

Golden honeyed pour with about half inch white head that recedes slowly. Pour from a growler.

Aroma is an immediate citrus. Fresh, clean and floral. Sugar Smack sweetened malt cereal. First batch caramel aroma so inviting.

Taste starts off with a mellifluous sweetness followed by pockets of alcohol. An enveloping bitterness ensues falling and coating to the sides of the tongue. Tongue thus takes on a mild hop pine numbness. Citrus, pine resin and alcohol linger well into the cranium. Very grapefruity throughout.

Mouthfeel is thin with creamy texture. Drinks very smoooooth.

Overall this screams Imperial. I've noted the texture is thin but that's works extremely well for me. I personally don't care for the amount of evident alcohol presence but that will not deter me from future purchases. This reminds me of the fruity sweetness and hop from Dirtwolf and the alcohol prominence of Hop Ranch. If your anywhere near this joint and you love imperials I would definitely stop by here and git yo self sum. Everything I've read about and more. Winner winner chicken dinner!

Reviewing Uber Mathias from Haymarket Pub & Brewery out of Chicago, Illinois. Mathias is Haymarket's citra hopped imperial Belgian-style IPA. Uber mathias is their Mathias dry hopped with 10 lbs of Cascade per barrel. The Uber Mathias is the second beer from the right.

Score: 95

4 oz sample served in a taster glass and enjoyed at Haymarket's 2nd Anniversary Party on 01/12/12. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Amber/copper color witha thin layer of white head. Good lacing on the taster glass. 4.25/5

Smell: Huge tropical citrus notes in nose: lemon, peach, mango, grapefruit, orange and tangerine. Pine-iness too. Biscuity malt and caramel malt backbone. Not getting any Belgian qualities in nose. Nonetheless, this is an absolutely enticing IPA nose. 4.5/5

Taste: Taste has more fruitiness and a little yeastiness than the nose, but none of the phenolic banana traditionally associated with Belgian style beers. Atop that is grapefruit, earthy spice/peppercorn, orange and pear. Caramel malt, but no breadiness on palate. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: Just shy of medum bodied. Low to medium carbonation. Slick, oily mouthfeel. Juicy on palate, dry on finish. 4.5/5

Overall: This and Clare's Thirsty Ale were the clear winners of the night. Uber Mathias was juicy, flavorful, and loaded with hoppy citrus. I will absolutely be seeking this out again in the future if it is rebrewed.

Recommendation: Seek this beer out; it is one of Haymarket's best beers!

Pairings: Beef chili.

Cost: $2 for a 4 oz pour or $6 for a 12 oz pour.

A: Clear and copper. little tiny carbonation bubbles with a thick white head. Good lacing!

S: Woah, dank and herbal! a huge wave of caramel oranges with s shot of sharp grapefruit. honeysuckle and more freshly bloomed flowers surround your nostrils. Delish.

T: Very sweet. A ton of pineapple. crisp apple and a truck load of mango. Sweet caramel backs up these tropical fruits. Towards the middle mouth kiwi and butterscotch come in before another helping of pineapple comes through. A bit buttery and some floral parts abeit light. Hides the abv very well.

M: Medium body with low carbonation. long tart finish. a very creamy dipa

O: Very impressive. delicious and fruity. quite juicy. one of the sweetest and most pineapple forward ipas i've ever had / 94

On-tap at Haymarket

A - Copper with a clean body with small, sticky white head.

S - Big nose filled with mango and passion fruit. I also picked up hints of grapefruit.

T - Loads of mango up front. Then, grapefruit and pine bitterness kicks in. Great balance between the two that makes it nice and balanced. Long pine bitterness lingers on in the finish as well as a slight alcoholic kick

MF - Heavy body with light carbonation. Slight stickiness. Rather clean finish with only slight hop resin remaining in the finish

O - Really great DIPA that never fails to impress. Great flavor and good balance between hoppy bitterness and citrus sweetness

Shared with tasting partner areich6 (as always)

A- Beautiful deep orange with a finger of white head that pulls back to a ring of white around the brew.

S- Big citrus notes that are reminiscent of Zombie Dust. Love these citra hops

T- Great citrusy notes, some nice malts in the background but the citra hops take the lead and arent letting go

M- Pretty creamy for a DIPA but definitely some prickly CO2 on the end

O- If Zombie Dust is a 10 in terms of citra hop ales, this is an 8.5 definitely some steps behind but still amazing

Served on tap at Haymarket. Appearance is deep gold with sticky white rad that leaves plenty of lacing. Nose has floral hops with waves of grapefruit and mango reign supreme. The taste is more of the same with loads of tropical fruit up front and a healthy amount of bitterness to follow. Awesome balance here, the 10% is nowhere to be found. Mouthfeel is appropriate for style with zero heaviness that sometime comes with a beer of this magnitude. Delicious.

Enjoyed on tap at Haymarket. Served in a 12 oz. goblet.

A: Pours a dark amber color with a white head forming on the pour. It recedes slowly leaving behind some sticky sheets of lace.

S: Piney and citrus with a malty sweetness through out. Some orange and melon notes with faint hint of resin.

T: Absolutely delicious. Bursting notes of citrus and tropical fruits. Grapefruit, orange rind, and lemon zest. Pineapple and melon with some mild grassy notes and a little piney bitterness. Great malt backbone with some sweet bread and cereal grain flavors. Both are definitely sweet.

M: Medium bodied with a sweet finish and medium carbonation level. Highly drinkable.

O: I could crush glass upon glass of this stuff. It was sweet, but I really enjoyed it and the hop profile is down right delicious.

I have to preface this review by saying DIPA's are not my favorite style. However, I've always felt with any label, that it is not the label that counts but if you can create something beyond a label into mass appeal. This could be the brew.

Now about the beer. Looks good with small bubble fizzy with good lacing. Smell is really fantastic. Smells like the perfume of your girlfriend when you were 18. The taste is candy-like with not much bitterness that the smell would imply. Extremely drinkable with the ABV totally hidden like presents behind an xmas tree. Eat well before drinking this one, because you'll probably have 2.

S-awesome smell, love citra hops. Reminds me of Zombie Dust, which is great. Citrus, grapefruit mango, a bit of pine as well.

T-Juicy citrus hops, but also a perfectly balanced malt backbone. Very well done Haymarket.

M-A bit slick and oily, good carbonation and medium body.

O-Great IPA, love the citra hops. Seek this one out for sure!

Thanks to jegross for the trade...shared with JLindros pours into a standard tulip.

A - Pours a crystal clear copper hue with a nice half a finger head that fades to leave a nice soapy wispy head and light halo.

S - Aromas of nice mango and papaya along with light orange citrus. Some sweet malts and slot of mango juice. Super.

T - Taste is so reminiscent of the nose. Bursts of tropical mangos and papaya not much citrus this is a tropical vacation. The alcohol is slightly detectable in the aftertaste but its to be understood for a high ABV dipa.

M - Mouthfeel is good and solid not too sweet not too lightly carbonated. Very drinkable.

O - Overall I was incredibly impressed with this beer. Can't get over how much mango is in this beer. Stellar. Definitely worth getting.
