Beer added by: beertooth on 01-23-2011

In honor of Officer Mathias Degan, the first of 8 of Chicago's Finest to lose their lives in the line of duty during the Haymarket Affair. Copious amounts of Citra Hops deliver wonderful citrus and mango notes. At 10% ABV, we feel Mathias is a proper representation of the strength and courage of our Boys in Blue. Raise one to thank the fine Officers of the Chicago Police Department for their sacrifice.

Cloudy but bright orange beer with prominent lacing. Smells like a tropical hop explosion and tastes like it too--my boyfriend thought this was the best beer he had all year, and we don't usually like Citra, so that's saying something. A very rich and juicy tropical hop flavor, mango, bubble-gum, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, just a touch of caramel malt, with a thick mouthfeel.

My notes mostly just say "wow" again and again... best imperial IPA ever? It may well be. (474 characters)

Growler purchased at the pub (of course) and opened at home the same evening. Poured into my new favorite glass, my Half Acre tulip.

A - Pours a deep copper w orange highlights and a foamy eggshell head of 3 fingers which dissipates after a few minutes to a collar w decent legs. Patchy lacing.

S - Redolent of citrus and pine w a hint of baked apples, blood oranges, and fresh-cut grass. Sweetbread and smooth caramel in support. Smells like an IIPA oughta.

T - Grapefruit, orange juice, and pine nuts explode up front. Pineapple and dreamsicle follow, then the malt asserts itself w buttery caramel and the slightest hint of glazed cinnamon rolls. Citric and earthy bitterness abounds throughout, finish is long and bittersweet.

M and O - Medium body, sticky w hop resin and an oily finish.

Mathias is an incredible brew, easily the best IIPA made in Chicago, and on par w the best of the region (Dreadnaught and Hopslam). Well worth a trip to Randolph and Halsted. (972 characters)

A: Dark coppery color, very little head. Looks very smooth.

S: Quite hoppy, but also sweet. Smells slightly of lemons and grapefruit.

T: Definitely a bit of grapefruit, with a good amound of hoppy bitterness. Quite tasty. The sweetness and bitterness is excellently balanced.

M: Very smooth. Not much carbonation and little creamy. I could drink this all night. Really nice. Can't even taste the alcohol, and 10.00% that is pretty impressive

O: This is very good American IPA. It has anything anyone would want in this style of beer.

Shared with tasting partner areich6 (as always)

A- Beautiful deep orange with a finger of white head that pulls back to a ring of white around the brew.

S- Big citrus notes that are reminiscent of Zombie Dust. Love these citra hops

T- Great citrusy notes, some nice malts in the background but the citra hops take the lead and arent letting go

M- Pretty creamy for a DIPA but definitely some prickly CO2 on the end

O- If Zombie Dust is a 10 in terms of citra hop ales, this is an 8.5 definitely some steps behind but still amazing (535 characters)

Appearance: This is a very cloudy, amber-colored beer, with an inch of foam that leaves some streaky lace behind

Smell: Sugary toffee with some tropical citrus

Taste: Very sweet, up front, and the lack of attenuation more than offsets the bitterness from the hops; after the swallow, there is a bit more balance but there is a lot of residual sugar in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I have a bias against sticky DIPAs, so this is not my thing; even so, it still lacks a bit of balance (538 characters)

finally, a local, fresh substitute for zombie dust! the only problem is it's $27 a growler plus $5 for the initial one. When your growler pricing is more than 3 floyds, you may want to rethink some things.
A: orangeish light amber. decent white head and lacing. light haze.
S: delicious citra hops-citrus and tropical fruit, above a honeyed, doughy malt base.
T: follows suit. medium to full sweet malts perfectly balanced by smooth, juicy hop bitterness and flavors.
M: at 10%, obviously bigger bodied than zombie dust. carbonation seems a bit light against this more viscous mouthfeel.
O: hell yeah. i was planning on sharing the growler i brought home, but will be selfish. (678 characters)

Citralicious fruity hops.
The new gold standard in DIPA -- I am spoilled for all others.
You need to have this fresh at the brewpub and it is glorious.
If you are a hop person -- you will love it.

Even if you do not think you are a hop person -- try this one. For those who are coming from the dark side (bocks, imp stouts and belgians) as they enter the beer scene -- this citrus hop bomb has enough fruit and sweetness to turn their palates.

A really world class beer -- worth the trip to chicago alone. Lucky for you there are many other good things to drink once you are here...

Beautiful glowing color, and the wafting of fruity hops greets you. The taste follows through with everything the appearance promises. Great body too. (737 characters)

Showed up in front of me in a tasting glass with a medium bubbles. Smells of citrus pervade, a lot pink grapefruit and pine. Lots of malt in the first taste, but laced throughout are citrus, and more pink grapefruit. A surprisingly light body, with a hint of the alcohol in the finish, lots of citrus too.
-awesome smell, love citra hops. Reminds me of Zombie Dust, which is great. Citrus, grapefruit mango, a bit of pine as well.

This is a fantastic example of an imperial IPA. If you get to haymarket, just hope they're brewing Mathias!!

A-hazy orange with a thin head.

S-awesome smell, love citra hops. Reminds me of Zombie Dust, which is great. Citrus, grapefruit mango, a bit of pine as well.

T-Juicy citrus hops, but also a perfectly balanced malt backbone. Very well done Haymarket.

M-A bit slick and oily, good carbonation and medium body.

O-Great IPA, love the citra hops. Seek this one out for sure! (373 characters)

Poured a nice cloudy orange with a solid head.

The smell was all citra, big giant funky and tropical goodness. I think Citra is the best smelling hop in the world, so its easy to understand why I think this beer smells great.

The flavor is a bit more subdued than the nose, with a nice blend of fresh hop flavors, some piney bitter backbone and a touch of sweet malt creeping through the hop assault.

The mouthfeel is thick and full with a long oily finish.

Very nice Double IPA, love the Citra dry hopping. (511 characters)

Growler poured into a New Belgium globe glass. Thanks to spycow for this local gem.

Ruby colored body with a tan/off white head with lots of lacing on the sides
Pineapple, mango and an onslaught of tropical and citrusy notes. Maybe a hint of booze in the background is the only negative but really this smells phenomenal.
Wow... follows the nose with the pineapple and mango. I'm impressed with the fruit like notes in this but this is a good deal sweeter than I would like. Really it is too sweet and it detracts from the drinkability of this.
Mouthfeel is right on, medium body, slightly sticky, a good amount of carbonation.

Overall this is an enjoyable beer and has potential to be one of the best DIPA's I've had but it is just too sweet. A little more bitterness to go with the nice citra hop flavors and this would be near the top of DIPA's I've ever had. Still I really enjoy this and am glad I got to try it. I will have to seek out more of this breweries beer. (972 characters)

A- Orange, thin head that disappears quickly (white)
S- Hop overload! Ripe tropical fruitiness
Taste - Really nice citrussy hops. You know you are drinking a very big beer, but not in an unpleasant way at all. It is just big and bitter, but also juicy.
M- Really full feeling, but also crisp and fresh with decent carbonation. Like I said in the taste, there is no doubt you are drinking a huge beer, but bitterness and alcohol are not unpleasant because of the juiciness and sweetness of the citrus flavor.

Overall: Great beer. This beer is THE reason to go to Haymarket so far... (583 characters)

A - A hazy orangish beer with a nice foamy, off-white head. Left some nice looking lace on the sides.

S - A lot of tropical fruit with some orangy citrus. There's a little bit of pine resin on the back end and a fairly strong caramel malt backbone.

T - Mostly dominated by citra hops, with big tropical fruit notes. Finish has just a little bit of a bitter bite on the end to let you know it's there. This is actually a really great beer, best I've had from Haymarket to date.

M - Medium bodied, nice carbonation.

O - Really nice beer, if Haymarket puts out more like this they may be onto something. (604 characters)

This is an incredible beer.

A: Amber through and through. Slightly hazy with great head retention and mild to heavy lacing. Off white head of foam.

S: MANGO!!! Grassy earthy tones with heavy heavy fruity waves.

T: Umm delicious? Malty but packing plenty of a kick with the hop level. 10% was masked well with the thickness of this beer. Hop heaven.

M: So thick and gunky! Just as it should be, enamel scrapingly heavy. Rests in the pockets, tongue and throat.

D: Went back to back with this, simply the best. (513 characters)

Beer poured into a Tulip shaped glass

A - Orange colored body, cloudy; great one finger head formed and held very well; lots of quality lacing formed on the sides of the glass

S - Citrus and pine hop smell; slight hints of orange; the nose is crisp and refreshing; malty backbone compliments this well brewed beer

T - Citrus and caramel flavors hit the palate very quickly; retro-olfaction generates plenty of pine and forestry flavors; crisp malty taste washes out the palate; not much bite though for a Double IPA

M - Dry finish with a slight bitter aftertaste; thin consistency; off-balanced blend of flavors, needs a little more hop bite to it

D - I thought the hops would overwhelm this beer, but it wasn't the case as it was not as well-balanced as I thought it would be; should have a bit more bite to it and have a nice lingering effect; it was still a nice beer and one I would recommend to others (911 characters)

I have to preface this review by saying DIPA's are not my favorite style. However, I've always felt with any label, that it is not the label that counts but if you can create something beyond a label into mass appeal. This could be the brew.

Now about the beer. Looks good with small bubble fizzy with good lacing. Smell is really fantastic. Smells like the perfume of your girlfriend when you were 18. The taste is candy-like with not much bitterness that the smell would imply. Extremely drinkable with the ABV totally hidden like presents behind an xmas tree. Eat well before drinking this one, because you'll probably have 2. (630 characters)

Poured from a growler into multiple pint glasses. Extra special thanks to Matt for sharing, and thanks to Matt, Joe, and Wil for the assist!

Also stopped by Haymarket on 3/15/11 with pops and had a 4oz pour.

A: Pours a bright peachy orange with agitated hazy clarity. Large, light orange head built up quickly on top before settling down to a thin wafer and a little lace.

S: Crazy good aroma! Gobs of fresh apricot and mango. Juicy Fruit and/or Fruit Stripe gum, pineapple, and super ripe juicer oranges.

T: There is some malt in there, lurking, but it acts to showcase the tropical fruit explosion. As it warmed I picked up more and more sweet citrus flavors (oranges, clementines, tangerines).

M: Huge, sticky, and sweet! The alcohol is pretty well hidden, but I could feel the hops etching into the enamel on my teeth.

D: So big and sweet it almost made me forget all about the 10%...almost. It was quite apparent by the end of the glass, though. (956 characters)

Served in a footed goblet at Haymarket.

Creamy lid of off-white foam, attractive reddish copper orange. Sticky crown of lacing majestically tops it all off. A spectral skim haunts the surface.

Sticky sweet tropical hop bomb... juicyfruit gum, mango, and grapefruit dominate. Extra pungent, with every sip its mandatory to take a deep inhale first to pull in the sheer hop intensity.

Resiny slickness, sweet malt and juicy tropical hops again. Some greenery around the edges, but the hop character is dominated by sticky sweet fruit nectars. Passion fruit, mango, tangerines. Full bodied and slightly syrupy, it sticks to your teeth. Light residual bitterness lingers equally with the caramel malt sweetness.

Awesome! A contender for top DIPA in the city. Hard to say, needs more research... growler please! (811 characters)

Thanks Kan for the growler. Served in a small tulip glass.

A - A finger of late-rising off-white foam that settles to a thin ring. Transparent reddish bronze body.

S - Tropical fruits, caramel malts, a touch of burnt sugars, and a hint of that chive note that I get from certain hop varietals.

T - Taste is very sweet, with lots of tropical fruits and sugary malts. Not a ton of bitterness to this beer. Could use a few additional flavors to offset the saccharine qualities, but nonetheless still quite good.

M - Medium-bodied, dry and resinous finish. Carbonation is somewhat low, probably because the growler sat out a while before I realized it was there.

D - Definitely the best Haymarket offering I've had so far. I had a few pours from the growler and will have this next time it shows up on-tap. (807 characters)

Thanks to Kan for bringing this growler, drank from a Cigar City snifter... Pours a dark clearish orange, guess they finally started filtering. Looks pretty good... The aroma is lots of citrus fruits; oranges rind and grapefruits. Pine on the back, present but not overbearing, a touch of alcohol but no indication this is 10%... Malty bread caramel base shows through with oranges and pine. Tastey and easy to drink, I kept coming back to this throughout the night.

Haymarket's best to date, glad to see they are moving in the right direction. (546 characters)

Enjoying on tap at Haymarket, on the cusp of the Blizzard of 2011, talking to a cute bartender.

A: Looks great. A cloudy dark orange.

S: Smells incredible. Mangos and peaches jump out of the glass and race up my nostril. Can't wait to taste it.

T: Wow! This is impressive. The mango and peach shine through. It's hoppy but not bitter. Excellent.

M: Medium body, nicely carbonated. Has a smooth, almost buttery feel.

D: Incredibly drinkable. Hard to believe its 10% ABV.

I hope I get snowed in here today! (516 characters)

12oz pour into a weird goblet.

This beer is a deep, cloudy bruised peach color with a thin layer of white head. It's really hazy with yeasty goodness.

The nose is ripe with citrus and tropical fruit. Big waves of grapefruit and mango, pine, and candied oranges. It smells like a great Midwest DIPA, super juicy!

The taste follows with zested orange, grapefruit, pine needles, sweet doughy malts and some booze. It's not overly complex, but it hits my hop fix. The citra hops are really bright.

The mouthfeel is full and slick with a low level of carbonation.

Tasty DIPA, but a one and done for me. It also took a few different people to get my order for this beer right. I'd order one more if I didn't feel it would take another 45 minutes to get it. This is probably best house beer they had on. The 10% really caught up to me though. (841 characters)
