Collaboration with DryHop Brewers

This 'blow of mercy' is a collaboration between Brant of Dryhop Brewers and our own Pete Crowley. A French farmhouse ale brewed with four types of malt, grains of paradise, chamomile, clementine zest, orange juice and dry-hopped with Calypso.

Half finger head and nice lacing on a murky amber with golden hues body. Aroma of pineapple, Orange peel and caramel. Very full aroma overall. Flavor has a nice yeast character with both earthy and herbal hops. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Nice beer for the style. Captures the yeast and hip flavors you want from the style with a nice semi dry finish.

Poured from tap at haymarket. Poured into a tulip and pours a dark amber/gold color.

Very good aromas of grains, hops, malts and some navel oranges along with amber grains. Nice depth as well with good balance.

Medium/full bodied with a very nice feel and flavors of navel oranges, amber grains, and some malts as well.

this was a real good biere de garde. Very nice and balanced both on the smell and taste.

Served in a tulip glass at Haymarket.

Always nice to get a first taste of some new up-and-coming Chicago brewer, even if it is just in collaboration. This stuff pours a clear copper-bronze topped by a finger of off-cream-white foam. The nose comprises orange zest, dusty wheat, light caramel, toffee, and a very light kiss of what I can only describe as blood. The taste brings in more of the same, though that blood-like aroma now comes into its own as a flash of blood orange. Kinda righteous how that worked out, eh? The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, a tasty take on the bier de garde style. I'm looking forward to seeing more from DryHop in the future...

On-tap at Haymarket. 4oz taster glass.

A - Dark orange-brown body that's transparent in the light. Off-white foam settles to a partial cap, thicker collar, and splotchy lace. On point for the style.

S - Phenolic yeast, bread, and fruity citrus, with some nebulous spices notes. To be honest I couldn't tell if the latter were from the yeast or adjuncts.

T - The taste is fairly similar, with bready malts, phenolic Belgian yeast, some nebulous juice, and a perhaps a hint of the advertised chamomile.

M - Medium bodied, with lower carbonation. Mildly grainy texture and dry texture, and no obvious alcohol.

D - A fairly enjoyable Bière de Garde, particularly if you like spicy Belgian yeast. It's just a style that's tough for me to get very excited about. I'd happily drink this again and finish it no problem, but I'd be hard-pressed to think of an occasion where I really wanted to order it over other beers at Haymarket.
