Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Don't hold a grudge tomorrow morning! Sip this huge, frighteningly drinkable ale with great caution. Brewed with as much malted barley as the mash tun would hold, then hopped and dryhopped with Centennial, this big brew is bursting with flavor and aroma of citrus and caramel.

Served in a tumbler at the brewpub.

..And all while watching Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby rock out on the screen above me... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear sunset amber topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises maple syrup, toffee, light vinyl, orange peel, and light pine resin. The taste brings in more of the same, with the aforementioned orange peel coming through as being candied. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, a tasty, enjoyable barleywine that doesn't overdo any aspect. Good times.

Had on tap at Haymarket. Served in a 12 oz. goblet.

A: Pours a dark ruby color with a light khaki head forming on the pour. The head has great retention and recedes slowly leaving behind some sticky sheets of lace.

S: The nose isn't as fragrant as I would like. There is some dark fruit and toffee sweetness, but I'm not picking up much of the hops.

T: A ton of dark fruit, raisin and fig, with a nice toffee sweetness. Some brown sugar and a nice hop profile as well. The finish has notes of sweet caramel and a little burnt sugar bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with a little stickiness to it, but I would have liked a little more heft to the body. That being said the carbonation was about a medium level and had a nice drinkability to it.

O: This beer really reminded me of Bigfoot. Nice dark fruit flavors and toffee sweetness with just enough hops in the flavor to remind you it's and American Barleywine.

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.

A - A finger of off-white foam settles to a thin cap, leaving behind ample lacing. Lightly hazed amber body.

S - A mix of orange and piney hops with caramel and red fruit malts - perhaps a touch of Crystal malt for good measure. It's a spot-on American barleywine, perhaps verging on malty DIPA. Minimal alcohol for 10%, which is appreciated.

T - There's some hefty hop flavor here as well, with tons of citrus and moderate piney bitterness in the finish. The malt sweetness is present but a bit more subdued than the aroma, imparting some light brown sugar and toffee notes. There's a mildly astringent note in the finish that I could have done without. More of a 3.75, but rounding up for the home team.

M - Smooth, perhaps slightly water, medium body, with moderate-to-low carbonation, and a fairly dry finish. There's a bit of alcohol warming too.

D - I'm generally note a huge fan of hoppy barleywines, as they often just taste like old DIPAs to me. That being said, this is spot-on for the style and I suspect others will very much enjoy it. I'm curious if this is the base for Clare's Right Hook; if it is I'd probably enjoy it more in six months.
