This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

A big, malty dark brown ale brewed with dark crystal, victory & chocolate malts. It's then hopped AND dry-hopped with 3lbs per barrel of Simcoe. Think of it as a brown double I.P.A.!

Served in a goblet at the brewpub.

Don't mind if I do. This stuff pours a clear garnet topped by a finger of lightly off-cream foam. The nose comprises mild cocoa, pine sap, and light grapefruit peel. The taste brings in more of the same, with a healthy balance maintained throughout. For most of it, the hops seem to have the upper hand (at least up front), but the cocoa takes over near the finish. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a damn tasty hoppy brown, one that understands the importance of a proper balance.

On-tap at Haymarket. Multiple 4oz tasters consumed.

A - Tan foam settles to a partial cap and splotchy lace. Transparent dark brown body.

S - Lots of hops here, with a mix of zesty herbs and tropical fruits. There's a very faint brown malt backbone but without looking at this I'd probably guess it was an IPA and not a brown ale.

T - The taste is similar, with a mixture of tropical and piney hops and a bit more in the way of brown sugar and nutty malts. There's a mild astringency that distracts, but otherwise this is quite solid.

M - Medium, chewy, and sticky body, with lower carbonation, and no perceptible alcohol.

D - Without the mild astringency this would be awesome, but it's still a good beer all the same. Hopefully they re-brew this and tweak the recipe a touch as I think it's a really solid addition to Haymarket's lineup.
