This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Allen Pinkerton was a Scottish American police officer and the first detective in Chicago. His agency was a major force against the developing labor movement in the United States and was accused of inciting riots in order to discredit labor unions and justify police crackdowns. It is in his dishonor that we brewed this big Scotch ale with 7 different specialty malts. You'll experience flavors of chocolate, coffee, toffee and cherry.

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.

A - White foam settles to wisps, a thick collar, and minimal lacing. Transparent copper-amber body.

S - Understated aroma at first, but as it warms it reveals a nice mix of chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, and lightly fruity yeast notes. No alcohol, and avoids being cloying as many Scotch Ales tend to be.

T - The taste is a bit heavier on bread and lightly roasted malts, but with some chocolate brownie, red fruit, and caramel presence as well. Similar to the aroma there's no obvious alcohol and nice flavor depth and balance.

M - The texture is a bit toasty and gritty. Medium-full in body and sticky in the finish. Moderate-to-low carbonation and light warming after 4oz.

D - A nice Scotch Ale that is consistent with my flavor preferences. I've never been nuts for the style, but this was easy to drink and on the whole quite enjoyable.
