Notes/Commercial Description:
Strength comes in many forms. With our Banyan Brown Ale, the flavors develop slowly and wrap around your taste buds. You’ll taste notes of chocolate and a certain nutty hoppiness that will inspire you to ask for a second pint.

Banyan trees are known as survivors. By nestling in crevices in other trees, the small seed of the Banyan takes hold and starts to expand. Slowly, over time, the Banyan tree drops its limbs and wraps around the original trunk. We like to think of the Banyan Brown Ale in the same way – take a sip, drop your troubles and start to relax.

The Banyan Brown Ale is perfect for Florida winters. The mild body is enough to keep you warm, without making you reach for woolen mittens. With hints of caramel and cocoa, you’ll enjoy sipping the Banyan Brown Ale all year long.

Consumed at the brewery tap room on March 10th, 2012.

Clear medium brown with amber highlights. An off-white creamy head clings to the sides and gives excellent uniform sheeting.

Aroma is vaguely malty and nutty.

Toffee and roasted nuts up front with some coffee. Low but notable bitterness on the finish. Delicious! I could drink this all night.

Mouthfeel is great; proper carbonation helps this one along.

Just a delight to drink. Note to west coast brewers: hops are not the be-all, end-all. Take some notes!

Pours a deep hue of brown with good clarity and a heavy white cap that fades slow and leaves good lacing.

The aroma has some cocoa, toffee and caramel with a good dose of spicy, herbal and earthy hops.

A little too hoppy and spicy, but nice underlying chocolate flavor with some biscuit and dark breads.

Medium bodied, slightly creamy, nice.

Overall, an enjoyable beer.

Brown ale

A Brown with a nice head that seemed to last 4

S Lots of roast aroma, not much hop which is to style and expected 4

T The roasted malt comes thru in the flavor and is very good. There is some sweetness in the finish and the malt lingers for a nice effect. No astringency, a well done brown 4.5

M Medium body, med thickness, good carbonation, but could use some more. 4

D Good drinking beer. This was the second best of the beers available during my visit in November. 4

A: Chocolate brown with red tints, hazy. Fluffy khaki head. Laces beautifully.

S: Malty with a little chocolate and maybe a hint of pipe tobacco.

T: Follows the aroma nicely. Malty and chocolate-y, and the tobacco note is there. Not an overwhelming hop character, but the hops and alcohol are just enough to dry up the finish. This is a very drinkable beer but it has a lot of character.

M: Light and pleasantly carbonated.

O: Very nice and easy-drinking brown ale. I tend to favor high-gravity, intensely flavored beers, but for "lighter fare" this does well.

This beer looks like your typical brown, but the nose offers a hint of something more. I'm not good with judging the intricacies of exact tastes so you'll have to excuse my unrefined palate. That being said, this beer tastes unlike any other brown I've had. It's go a great backbone and mouthfeel. The aftertaste makes you want to drink more. It's a solid performer throughout from nose to throat. Out of all of their beers available this is by far my favorite. All the parts sum up to an exceptional whole. Don't pass on this beer!

On tap at the new Hopjacks location on 9 Mile. Bar pour into a pint glass left no head, though I suspect there wouldn’t be much of one anyway. Deep brown color with no visible carbonation streams. Nose of sweet sorghum, cocoa, caramel, and dark fruit. A bit boozy. In the mouth, raisins, a bit of roasted malts and coffee, sweet malt profile, moderate bitter to dry finish. Mouth is not as flat as I would have expected based on the apparent lack of carbonation. It rides the line of being too thin but is still nicely quenching. Nearly 7% ABV nicely masked.

Overall: A decent, competent brown, a fruity, sweet and alcoholic take on brown ale. Not my favorite from PBB but a decent, drinkable brew.
