From the growler, it pours a clear amber with a moderate head, last awhile. Lacing Hops evident in the nose. Hops definitely evident in the mouth. Enjoyable!

I have a hard time rating more detail than, "on a scale of 1-10, how much did you like this beer?" That being said, I tried to think hard about it...and after 3 of these, it earns a solid 4.25 (or 8.5/10). Great hops kick from the first sip and doesn't let up as you continue. This is one I'd love to have while sitting on the beach - next time I'm in VA Beach, I'll be sure to stop by. (Be careful, with 8.8 ABV, this one will sneak up on you!)

Poured from 2 week old cans into IPA glass.

Nice head retention and a bit of lacing. Color is a bit on the amber side.

Nose is full of piney hop, malt definitely shows through.

Relatively well balanced hop and malt, bit heavier on the malt side than I like. Doubt this is from age since it's a relatively fresh can.

Nearly clear on the first pour, murky on the second, and golden orange in color with a 3 finger white head with thick, clingy lacing.

A glorious hoppy aroma with ripe grapefruit, tropical fruit and caramel malts.

Taste of sweet ripe grapefruit and bitter rind with light caramel. Very fresh.

Moderately full in body with moderate carbonation. Drying with great retention.

A great beer. Kick ass aroma and taste, and great body. A "go to" beer.

Thanks to @montman for this one.

So solid. Aroma is bursting with both hoppy citrus and malt backbone. Flavor comes through with more of the same. Really solid. Finishes with same flavors with a slight sticky resin. Love it.

Poured from a tallboy into a shaker pint, the beer is a slightly hazed, caramel coloring, with a steady flow of carbonation in the body, and a fluffy, light, big bubbled, off-white head. Aromas of dank hops resin, piney and sticky, with heavy vinous and vegetal, with a richly sweet bolt of tropical fruit notes, including pineapple, mango, and melon. Very well balanced nose. Flavors are heavily roasted and richly sweet forward, with a solid dose of rich caramel, followed immediately by pineapple and melon sweet notes, and all undercut by an extremely bitter, dry, and resinous hops character, with notes of cut grass, pine tassel, and pepper spice. This one has it all, kids, and keeps a pretty decent, harmonious balance, too. The body is full and smooth, but with enough levity from the carbonation to keep it extremely drinkable. The aftertaste is all hops, with a more herbal tone coming forward, including basil, pepper, and lemon grass. There is also, still, a heavy dose of the pine pitch, wet grass, and general hops stickiness still in the aftertaste, too. Smooth, dry, bitter finish, with a solid dank linger. Good beer.

Poured from a 16 OZ can into a pint glass.
Aroma- Has a nice hop smell with some citrus tossed in
Appearance- A murky copper color with a thick white head.
Taste- A nice hop flavor with some citrus and a little spice. real good
Palate- A medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Has a dry finish with a hop bite.
Overall- A surprisingly good American DIPA. I liked the color and flavor and the can is pretty cool to look at.

I'm surprised this isn't rated higher. I thought this had some really on-point flavors and aromas. Big grapefruit, resiny hop aroma and taste with slightly sweet malt backbone. Thick mouthfeel but goes down easy

this beer needs some fresh ratings. new recipe, newly canned on 2/4/15. it was mediocre, but hopefully the change in profile will change the current desire and outlook!

N - nose is fairly similar, but has a sweeter, more distinct character. you can tell there are citra hops present now.

A - murky, dark, almost blood-orange color. average head and lacing.

T - is this even the same beer? big bursts from the citra hops jump right out. almost a buttery character - this is all of a sudden a must-have local (read: 757/hampton roads) DIPA, and the only local one brewed often enough.

P - not flashy, nothing to dismiss. biting, stinging, no grapefruit though.

O - if you're in VB, you have to get some of this. this went from "meh" to very good overnight. as long as they can brew enough to keep this fresh, i'll be happy.

Appearance: The body is hazy with a medium shade of copper beneath a thick fluffy white head. Loads of visible carbonation.

Aroma: Fresh smelling hop aroma. Catty scent with a strong garlic presence.

Taste: There is a strong earthy and woody character to the beer. Tea-like with a bit of cedar and fairly strong mint at the end.

Mouthfeel: It has a very strong bitter backbone with a good dry finish.

Overall: It's a pretty good Double IPA that really seems to focus on herbal flavors rather than citrus. The can says "This west-coast style India Pale Ale boasts intense bitterness and grapefruit-like character throughout." They got the bitterness down, but they missed the mark on the grapefruit.

As an IPA fan this just became a front runner for me. It has a kick with near 9% alcohol so you don't do many of these at one sitting. Both hoppy and citrusy. For me I don't know how they would improve on this one. Loved it and will definitely have more.

A big thanks to the legendary woodychandler for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a beige color with a 1 inch head. Smell is balnaced citrus hops and caramel malts. Taste starts off very hoppy, some citrus, caramel malts at the end. Bitter and desert dry. Feels medium bodied in mouth and overall is a good quality beer.

Golden Amber color poured into an IPA glass from a 16oz can. Piney, citrus hop aromas give way to a hoppy palate, pine, grapefruit, citrus Flavors, not a whole lot of sweetness but it works. Only drawback, is the lack of body, could use a little more maltiness, but still very good.

Outstanding beer! Found it in a little dive in VA Beach. Came in one of the best designed cans ever! The 108 IBUs hits you right away! The taste was right up there with the better IPAs I've ever had (Dogfish 90, Hoptimus Prime, Hoptimum) I've never had a a beer from Beach Brewing; but after this one I'm hooked. Not sure if I can get it here in DE but if when I go back to VA in Feb. I plan on going to the brewery.

I was extremely excited when I saw this beer because it was a cool can, I am a hophead, I love 2x IPA's and it is brewed less than anhour from my house. First of all, I was not unsatisfied with the beer, but I expected a little more flavor and boldness. The IBU's are insane but you really do not get the whole effect of that when drinking. It pours a nice frothy head and is a brilliant orange/amber, but cloudy. The flavor is full of hops, but something seems to be missing. It is a great brew, but I think a little more refinement from this very new brewery will come with time

16 oz can into tulip glass. canned on 04/30/14.

A: a rich orange hue. frothy bright white head. clarity is bad. a lot of haze.

S: floral hop aroma. onions. grassy. really resiny hop aroma overall. potent. not getting any oxidation notes.

T: similar to the nose, the flavor starts floral as well. citrus. almost woody-like flavor. raw hop flavors. pine, resinous. bitterness is high, but not unbearable. especially for the style. a bit of chalky, yeast bite bitterness as well in the finish. lingers after the drink is gone. the more I drink the more the bitterness is starting to overwhelm the flavor.

M: moderate to low level of carb on a full bodied brew.

D: not bad, but needs refinement along the edges IMO. good start for them and enjoyed this as my first offering from Beach.

Extra received in a trade. Thanks meadhatter! Really cool can label.

Pours a dark orange, with a huge, 3 inch sea-foam like head, and lots of lacing.

Smells like dank herbality (it's a word now), candied pineapple, and grapefruit.

This is fresh, canned on 6/11/14, it would appear. However, the flavors are slightly muddled. It tastes good, it feels like a DIPA, but the flavors don't particularly stand on their own enough. Lots of bitterness, with a good amount of caramel malt, as well. Some citrusy flavors don't get allowed to shine deeply enough- I do pick out candied pineapple and orange, though.

Medium bodied, crisp and highly carbonated mouthfeel. Drinkable, but just sort of boring.

Not bad, but nothing all that exciting. It's best quality is the drinkability, but I wish the flavors were more vibrant.

poor - outstanding poor. Very voluminous, sea foam, frothy poor with a delicious two/three finger head. Excellent cloudy amber appearance. Not really sticky on the lace though.

Nose - Pine/Resin/Grapefruit

Taste - Awesome! Very balanced and just the right amount of IBU's. I've had Heady Topper, which I find a little over the top, but Hoptopus hits the sweet spot. It's a hop heads delight. Excellent beer.

West Coast IPA all the way.... Grapefruit in spades, Pine, Resin; Nice sweet malt in the background. Just what I like.

Man i'm sooo glad to have a local brewery that makes a great west coast DIPA.

bomber from Grape and Gourmet, VA Beach

a: poured into a tulip glass, the beer is a hazed orange-amber in color, sporting a low off-white head with minimal retention

s: a body of caramel malts, heavy and sweet, with some fruit notes - particularly apricot, fresh grainy bread, strong hop aromas that combine pine and citrus, but unfortunately without that crisp, vivid freshness that makes a great ipa/dipa for me, instead they give off a steeped, muddled juice aroma, still nice - just not great

m: carbonation is low-moderate, with a medium body and some malt sugar weight

t: fairly heavy with caramel malt, sweet malt and fruity hop flavors - a blend of steeped citrus rind and pine, similar complaints as on the nose - muddle hop flavors allow the malts to draw attention away, powerfully bitter with strong pine and citrus pith flavors lingering

o: a good, not great dipa, solid malt foundation with a nice hop load, just a bit unrefined and lacking the vivid hops that I really prefer in the style

This was a bourbon barrel aged Hoptopus, I would've added a new beer but this is my first review. Aged in Bowman Bourbon barrels and poured at a local pub during a Virginia Craft beer dinner. Poured into a tulip glass with large white head.

A: Bright orange in color with about an inch of thick white head nice clarity. thick lacing left behind

S: Orange notes, some woody, smoky smells

T: This beers strongest point. The bourbon is not obvious but alcohol is, my guess is its a bit higher than the 8.8% of the normal hoptopus, I would also dare to venture that the 108 IBU number is lower as this is not as hoppy as a normal hoptopus. I think the barrel aging really helps this beer not taste a boozy as it usually does while still being able to clearly taste the alcohol.

M: Thick and dry

O: I would recommend but I'm pretty sure this was a limited release, not sure how many of these kegs got out but I don't think it was bottled. Nice double IPA from a Virginia brewer

Solid but not spectacular DIPA. Poured a hazy amber color int a pint glass. Head is small and white but retention is pretty good and there are some thick bands of lacing on the glass. Smell is pretty good...citrus hops.
Balanced flavor, citrus hops and some caramel malts. Not a head shrinker, more or a balanced DIPA.

Mouthfeel is crisp and rich (in the end). Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is a bit light at first, but like many hoppy beers, the "accumulation of blows" on the tongue makes it more rich.

Solid offering....I would drink this one again.

Bottle thanks to Drake. Served in a mini snifter. Pours a clear orange color with a white head and some lacing. The nose carries some faint citrus and earthy-pine hops with a bit of grain behind that. Hops aren’t too powerful. Flavor has an odd graininess that I didn’t quite care for. As it warmed it seemed like it may have been oxidation. Citrus hops and some bready malt. Medium body with a decent kick of hop bitterness. Not something that I would seek out again.

Into a Boston perfect pint glass

A- I love this appearance. A warm orange citrus colored with a off white 2 finger head that clings to the sides beautifully and takes 10-15 seconds to dissipate.

S- hops, hops, hops. Some orange zest, grapefruit, lemon and bark.

M- oily, bubbly and a little chewy, very dry. not spectacular but decent

T- hops, doesn't hide the alcohol incredibly well...perhaps bc they arrived too hard to achieve the namesake by making it 8.8 % alcohol to go along with the name. I appreciate that. Just need more body to hide it

O- this beer will sneak up on you fast. It's alcohol isn't hidden particularly well but it keeps you wanting more. I've had a lot better double IPAs but this is a solid 2nd tier

From a can, pours a clear dark gold color, very still, without alot of carbonation or head.

The nose is heavy citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit, with just a bit of caramel. I like the citrus forward side of this. The flavor is more grapefruit, a little pine and more citrus rinds. Not alot of sweetness which is fine with me. Clean bitter finish.

Overall, enjoyable, but better options out there to grab for a regular basis.
