A: Pours a clear but almost opaque deep brownish amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and some ruby red + copper highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy beige head that reduces to a large patch of thin film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to heavy amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of dark malts with a light amount of caramel sweetness along with moderate aromas of citrus/lemon, citrus/grapefruit pith, and spicy hops.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of dark malts with a light amount of caramel sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of citrus/lemon, citrus/grapefruit pith, and spicy hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which does not linger for long.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Overall this beer is very well balanced between the flavors of the malts and hops without being overly sweet or taste of just spices like some other examples in the style - this makes the beer easier to drink and the alcohol is well hidden. Very refreshing and light.

Not a typical winter warmer, not spiced or overly malty. Actually really enjoyed the hop presence on the back end. A nicely balanced brew, maybe not worth seeking out or anything, but I could see happily drinking this one again if the situation arose.

Local outfit have to give them props for putting stuff in cans!

Appearance: Not the best looking beer I have ever seen. Not much in respect to head retention. Kind of flat muddy water appearance.

Aroma: Light flora hop notes seem to be the main point on this one, otherwise its pretty simple. Not what I expected at all though. I was expecting a more sweet malty aroma, the hops were a good surprise.

Taste: Much like the aroma the taste was the most shocking part of this beer. I was expecting the typical spiced or super malty winter warmer style. This is more of a brown hoppy ale. I have never been a fan of this style because it isn't quite a black IPA and it certainly isn't a standard IPA. I think the malts detract from the hops and the hops detract from the malts. Its a mess in this regard.

Overall: I think they did something different and I can commend them for that, however if you are going to make a Winter Warmer explain that you are actually not doing one but a hoppy brown ale. Foothills does a better job at this style with the Hoppy Medium for anyone interested in something similar, better and from NC.
