bottle aged 8 months

appearance is dark brown almost black. smell is bourbon all in front and the heat is there. vanilla and sweet malt is apparent in the smell. taste is much like the smell. lots of bourbon, vanilla, a little coffee and some toffee notes in there as well. not to complex of a profile (no roasted malt apparent, or dark chocolate flavors). goes down smooth, not a lot of carbonation. Lacing is spotty, but not too prominent. Mouthfeel is smooth, not to bitey or heavy. Good for the style, just looking for more depth and personality. Food pairing should be something rich or sharp. Beemster XO, smoked bbq, southern food will go well here, such as gumbo, cajun spices and cracklings. Pecan desserts and spiceful sweets such as carrot cake or sock-it-to me cake (upside down pineapple cake).

Just picked this up from the tasting room on Knoxville St. today for $15. I have too many bourbon barrel-aged stouts so I said to hell with it, let's try this one out!

APPEARANCE: thicky, oily black, like engine oil or chocolate syrup. Nice solid mocha-white head that tapers down quickly. Minimal ring around the glass.

AROMA: Whoa...lots of bourbon. Then there's a lot of chocolate. Other typical BA stout aromas pop in - oak, vanilla. There's a strong whiff of alcohol. Some cherries pop their head in there, too.

TASTE: I feel that bourbon barrel-aged imperial stouts have the same aromas and tastes. This beer validates my hypothesis - the taste is immediately bourbon. Then chocolate of all varieties, leaning mostly toward white and milk chocolate. Oak, vanilla, a little bit of caramel are in there - sweetness abounds. It's hot, for sure - a strike of alcohol on the palate makes me think this is a much higher ABV than the 9.8% printed on the bottle. A lot of people seem to be turned off by alcohol, but I like it. Strong, but not unnecessarily harsh. I'd say the taste on this one is like a more bourbon version of Firestone Walker's Parabola.

MOUTHFEEL: Thick, oily body. It just coats all of my mouth with a residual sweetness. As it warms the alcohol becomes heavier in the mouth. I feel like I should maybe put a drop of distilled water in it! Nicely carbonated.

FINISH: Heavy, lingering finish. Smooth, but pronounced alcohol burn. Sweet, dark malts.

OVERALL: Coronado's done something great with this beer. It's a solid example of the style and I wouldn't hesitate to put it in the world-class tier. Maybe it's because I had a Firestone Walker Parabola last week, but I'd say the BA Stupid Stout is very similar.

After reading the (so far) only review on here of this, I have to say it's a different product altogether. If you can get a hold of this one, it's a must try for all you bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout folks. Hope they release some more soon!

Look: opaque jet black with a minimal mocha head that just rims the glass. Quite and active beer with lots of legs

Smell: Lots of oak at first with some semi-sweet chocolate, dark cherries, raisins, dark fruit, currants, slight sweet vanillas, bourbon, and more dark chocolate. Smells awesome with lots of chocolate cover cherry notes

Taste: Big oak notes on the attack followed by a really nice warming vanilla, chocolate covers cherries, more oak, a earthy oat like flavor, raisins, bourbon, and dark chocolate. Really nice

Mouthfeel: Big and heavy bodied on the tongue. Medium carbonation and slightly wet as the taste develops on the tongue in dries very slowly to allow all the flavors to really get their chance to shine through. Alcohol is present with a warm sensation half way through the profile that also warms the chest but nothing over powering

Overall: Wow! One really nicely done BA imperial stout. It has a lot of the same characteristics as bourbon county only not as thick. Really enjoyed the dark fruit and dark chocolate notes and how they meld together really nicely. The finish is also perfect as it doesn't dry super fast allowing the beer to really run it's complex profile.

Really great showing for Coronado Brewing Company! I'm not sure if they've done other barrel aged projects but this came out really nice. Very drinkable and I'm really happy to see this brewer stepping up their game! Southern California doesn't have to be known for IPAs with all of the great barrel programs in the works.

A: Pours black with a tightly bubbled 1/2 finger light brown head. Leaves some light sheets of lace down the glass with each sip.

S: Holy barrel! Tons of spicy bourbon and oak on the nose. The oak is really, really intense here, pushing big spice notes out at you. Underneath, there are some notes of cocoa powder, dark chocolate and some light dark cherry notes.

T: Again, holy moly. TONS of oak here. Woody as hell with a big and slightly boozy kick of bourbon that will put some hair on your chest. Middle has some dark chocolate and dry baking chocolate notes with a touch of anise. Finish brings dry bourbon, a bit of booze, and dark chocolate. This is really good stuff.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, vanilla, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and wood bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice barrel aging treatment that works well with the base beer.
