bottle aged 8 months

appearance is dark brown almost black. smell is bourbon all in front and the heat is there. vanilla and sweet malt is apparent in the smell. taste is much like the smell. lots of bourbon, vanilla, a little coffee and some toffee notes in there as well. not to complex of a profile (no roasted malt apparent, or dark chocolate flavors). goes down smooth, not a lot of carbonation. Lacing is spotty, but not too prominent. Mouthfeel is smooth, not to bitey or heavy. Good for the style, just looking for more depth and personality. Food pairing should be something rich or sharp. Beemster XO, smoked bbq, southern food will go well here, such as gumbo, cajun spices and cracklings. Pecan desserts and spiceful sweets such as carrot cake or sock-it-to me cake (upside down pineapple cake).

Just picked this up from the tasting room on Knoxville St. today for $15. I have too many bourbon barrel-aged stouts so I said to hell with it, let's try this one out!

APPEARANCE: thicky, oily black, like engine oil or chocolate syrup. Nice solid mocha-white head that tapers down quickly. Minimal ring around the glass.

AROMA: Whoa...lots of bourbon. Then there's a lot of chocolate. Other typical BA stout aromas pop in - oak, vanilla. There's a strong whiff of alcohol. Some cherries pop their head in there, too.

TASTE: I feel that bourbon barrel-aged imperial stouts have the same aromas and tastes. This beer validates my hypothesis - the taste is immediately bourbon. Then chocolate of all varieties, leaning mostly toward white and milk chocolate. Oak, vanilla, a little bit of caramel are in there - sweetness abounds. It's hot, for sure - a strike of alcohol on the palate makes me think this is a much higher ABV than the 9.8% printed on the bottle. A lot of people seem to be turned off by alcohol, but I like it. Strong, but not unnecessarily harsh. I'd say the taste on this one is like a more bourbon version of Firestone Walker's Parabola.

MOUTHFEEL: Thick, oily body. It just coats all of my mouth with a residual sweetness. As it warms the alcohol becomes heavier in the mouth. I feel like I should maybe put a drop of distilled water in it! Nicely carbonated.

FINISH: Heavy, lingering finish. Smooth, but pronounced alcohol burn. Sweet, dark malts.

OVERALL: Coronado's done something great with this beer. It's a solid example of the style and I wouldn't hesitate to put it in the world-class tier. Maybe it's because I had a Firestone Walker Parabola last week, but I'd say the BA Stupid Stout is very similar.

After reading the (so far) only review on here of this, I have to say it's a different product altogether. If you can get a hold of this one, it's a must try for all you bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout folks. Hope they release some more soon!

Look: opaque jet black with a minimal mocha head that just rims the glass. Quite and active beer with lots of legs

Smell: Lots of oak at first with some semi-sweet chocolate, dark cherries, raisins, dark fruit, currants, slight sweet vanillas, bourbon, and more dark chocolate. Smells awesome with lots of chocolate cover cherry notes

Taste: Big oak notes on the attack followed by a really nice warming vanilla, chocolate covers cherries, more oak, a earthy oat like flavor, raisins, bourbon, and dark chocolate. Really nice

Mouthfeel: Big and heavy bodied on the tongue. Medium carbonation and slightly wet as the taste develops on the tongue in dries very slowly to allow all the flavors to really get their chance to shine through. Alcohol is present with a warm sensation half way through the profile that also warms the chest but nothing over powering

Overall: Wow! One really nicely done BA imperial stout. It has a lot of the same characteristics as bourbon county only not as thick. Really enjoyed the dark fruit and dark chocolate notes and how they meld together really nicely. The finish is also perfect as it doesn't dry super fast allowing the beer to really run it's complex profile.

Picked this up in a grocery store of all places.
Served in a tulip glass.

Black body with brownish highlights around the edges where the light hits it. Creamy mocha foam, lasts for a few sips, then fades into a cirrus skim across the surface. Intricate drippy lace patterns, looks like rain on a windshield at high speeds.

Aroma is alright... carob, roasted malt, residual sugar sweetness. Meh.
As it comes up to room temperature there's a little bit of woodiness.

Flavor has a little more complexity. Tobacco leaf, milk chocolate, trace vanilla, slight oak and bourbon heat. Creamy and full bodied with a light sweetness. Fairly balanced and "drinkable" for a BA Imperial Stout, though it's not really treading any new territory.

12.7 fl oz. bottle, no apparent bottled on date, 2015 vintage. My first beer from Coronado Brewing Company, acquired at the local beer store - 'the "Coronado Collection" is the limited release of our barrel aged liquid treasures. 2015 release: Stupid Stout Imperial Stout Aged in Oak Bourbon Barrels". My bottle lists a 9.00% abv.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - It pours a thick viscous inky black with hues of dark blood red in there when held in front of the light. Opaque in the glass with around two fingers of thick creamy dark mocha head. Lots of sticky mocha lace left behind. Looks wonderful.

S - Very good traditional bourbon barrel stout aromas here - lots of oak wood, mustiness, toffee, vanilla, caramel, powdery cocoa / baking chocolate, & lots of strong alcohol fumes still prominent.

T - The taste follows the nose - creamy vanilla, chocolate, toffee, dark coffee bean roast, earthy oak wood / mustiness. Perhaps some slight creamy / milky / lactose type presence. A touch herbal / tea leafy mixed with the toffee / caramel side of things.

M - A very smooth & creamy feel. Medium-full bodied with good carbonation. Alcohol warmth definitely noticeable. This is a slow-sipper, to be sure, and I could definitely see this beer benefiting from some age & time to mellow.

Overall, a delicious barrel aged stout from Coronado Brewing; I am definitely intrigued to try more from these guys. Will please the mindful bourbon barrel aged stout lover, and it paired great with the gooey chocolate marijuana cookie I just had.

Really great showing for Coronado Brewing Company! I'm not sure if they've done other barrel aged projects but this came out really nice. Very drinkable and I'm really happy to see this brewer stepping up their game! Southern California doesn't have to be known for IPAs with all of the great barrel programs in the works.
