Clear golden colored beer with a tall white colored head.

Smells of fruity jalapeno and of smoke. Enough pepper to tickle the nose. Faint coriander but the jalapeno really does a good job of hiding it.

Starts out mildly sweet and fruity, not hot at first. Smoky and still more fruit. Faint caramel from the piloncillo. Mild bitterness. They managed to get the jalapeno fruit and largely leave the heat behind, this is maybe heavy black pepper hot. Jalapeno leaves a green herb note to the finish.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a tasty offbeat beer. It is debatable if this really is more of a Chile beer than a saison.

22oz into tulip. Pours a hazy orange amber that clarifies some with temperature. So this is a saison, which means some spice. There is indeed some spice. A subtle Begio-funk background, but really subtle. It's there, so you know it has a Belgian foundation. The good: the "spice" part might bring some coriander and cumin, and the pepper flavors are of the pepper's flesh instead of just a heat thing. The problem for me is that the pepper flesh flavor just dominates and the spice, malt, and yeast portions are fairly overwhelmed. As a novelty beer, it would actually pair well with intensely flavored dishes (such as mole), serving as a cutting agent and palate washer.

Bottle pour at the LA Beer Week Kickoff Festival held at Exposition Park in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky whitish-orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, earth, spice, yeast, and slight chile aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, earth, spice, yeast, and slight chile flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a fairly subtle chile presence all around.

Serving type: bottle.

This is a very interesting beer. The jalapenos blend very well with the signature raison flavors present. Unfortuantely I am writing this the day after I drank it so I can't go into much more detail.
