Collaboration with Cigar City Brewing
This collaboration represents a unique fusion of styles and balance. It was brewed when CCB brewmaster Wayne Wambles and owner and CEO Joey Redner visited San Diego late last year. The name “Jurata” (pronounced Yoo-‐rah-‐tuh) is Polish for “sea”, and rings true with both Coronado and Cigar City beside opposite oceans. It is also a mythical mermaid in the Baltic Sea.

I was anxious to Pop! the cap on this one since it marked the first of my transition away from Rogue Ales after a week+ (!) with them. I have an affinity for Baltic Porters dating back to my time as an undergrad at Pitt, hanging out with the late-Stosh, owner of the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern (BBT). I would have the red Polish platter & then we would break out the stogies & begin opening Baltika #6s like they were going out of style!
From the Bottle: "(yoo‐rah‐tuh)"; "When naming this Baltic [P]orter, a collaboration with Tampa's Cigar City Brewing, we opted for Jurata as a nod to a mythological mermaid known to roam the depths of the Baltic Sea, just as the energetic yeast used to brew this deep[,] dark beer navigated our fermentation tanks. Dive in and enjoy Jurata's true-to-style rich and complex flavors!"
I held my breath as I Pop!ped the cap on this aged bomber. I was hoping that it had held up & would not be a gusher & my prayers were answered. Nothing untoward occurred, so I started a VERY slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. My success was limited by the lack of formation of any head. 8=( In-glass swirl to the rescue! This netted me just better than a finger of foamy, soapy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with modest retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity & garnet highlights. Ooh. Nose smelled richly of Baker's chocolate with a light smokiness. 8=O Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was beautiful with the flavors having melded extremely well over time. It had a bittersweet chocolatiness along with a subtle smokiness that lent itself to a slight tanginess. Mmm. The taste was making me want to score a Macanudo Maduro & light that puppy up as a great accompaniment to this beer.
For the uninitiated, that is an approachably-priced moderately high-end dark wrapper cigar. I used to thrive on Maduros until I developed adult-onset asthma in my 40s. I still occasionally indulge, but nothing like in my misspent past. Sigh.
Finish was dry with a pronounced bittersweet chocolatiness & a light smokiness. As to the latter, it really seemed to settle in my sinuses to the point that every breath on my part conjured up memories of cigars. Man, I SO miss them! Coffee & stogies on the fantail after supper while underway were a highlight of the twilight years of my U.S. Navy career. Sigh. YMMV.

The abv is well hidden for %8. big notes of coffee. some bakers chocolate, roasted malts. One of my favorite baltic porters. If you told me this was an Imperial Stout I would not argue with you. Both Cigar City & Coronado did a splendid job on this collab. Cheers! A-

September 19th, 2015 - This collaboration between Coronado Brewing and the far away Cigar City is a meaty boy. Already from across the table I can smell something like beef jerky mashed with oatmeal raisin cookies, and it's heavy. A closer smell reveals the classic scent of a Baltic Porter, both heavy and sharp, with some gingerbread and molasses in tow. And it is measurably boozy, smelling like macerated raisins. The palate is creamy and extremely luxurious and smooth, though ending with a bit of stickiness. A refined mixture of syrup, pine and juniper are attached to the side, giving this an exceptionally appealing flavor, and a taste that I think of as Alaska. Unconventional in its strength and flavor palate, I love everything about it.
April 30th, 2015 - My original notes for this have been lost to time, but I do recall this collaboration with Cigar City being a very smooth and drinkable porter. It's the kind that balances some dark and husky maltiness with a lactic acidity and sourness that makes a perfect pairing. Best after dinner, I think, with a cheese (cheddar) plate.

Found a bomber of this for $6.00 before tax. Poured into a pint glass, this beer pours a very dark brown color with a nice tan head that's well over an inch thick when first poured that settles to a nice thick ring lining the inside of the glass along with good lacing. Aromas of roasted, biscuity malts along some milk chocolate sweetness and coffee notes. The taste is pretty much the same, with roasted, biscuity malts with milk chocolate sweetness and some black coffee bitterness. Not really any hop bitterness per say. Good balance of flavors here. Has a smooth and frothy, slightly crisp medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Has a clean, slightly dry finish. A very good beer all around here.

An easy drinking Baltic porter? It could be because my son in law was afraid to drink it and let it sit in his fridge for a year or so.
It's the deepest brown with excellent lacing. The smell is thick with alcohol and roasty malts.
The taste is a boozy, roasty, malty nastiness, worth a big bitter after taste.
This is a much easier drinking Baltic porter than I expected. It is a pleasant surprise.
