Gorgeous beer- rich, saturated amber/red color, crystal clear, with a dense creamy head.

Whoa- old school alert on the nose! C-hops and deep caramel up the wazoo. It's bringing me back to when St. Rogue Red was a whole new experience. What's pretty great is how multi-faceted it really is after that initial blast. Lots of pine, for sure, but also orange peel, toffee, dark bread crust, those fruitcake candies, even a hint of cocoa. It's all so creamy yet lively as well. There's a pretty nice see-saw ride on the palate between the hops and caramel malt, with the malt winning out at the end. It could use a touch more bitterness, but that's a minor quibble. It's pretty smooth and drinkable overall. A lot of the flavors from the nose are repeated, although the main impression I am left with this time are those fruitcake candies. Caramel and orange peel come on very late and linger on the finish.

This. Is. Exactly (!!!) what I was hoping for when I picked up this beer, without a doubt. This kind of beer may seem old-fashioned these days, but to me it's more of a classic ride. And it's well-made, to boot!

I dig it. Nice red from a reliable brewery. I first had it at the Pike in Long Beach.

Bottle poured into a BarrelHouse Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours deep red orange amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a nice layer and laces well.

S: Toasty malt, floral, light citrus, a little fruity, and some caramel, almost brown sugar like sweetness.

T: Floral, light grapefruit, fruity notes, toasted malt, caramel/toffee sweetness, mabye a hint of chocolate.

M: Light to medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: This one is just ok. I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Too rich and malty for me...I didn't enjoy the chocolatey thickness.

Poured a deep amber with ruby highlights; a very creamy, sustained beige head. There is a date stamped on the bottle; however, it does not indicate if it is a "drink by" or "bottled on" date. If the latter, it is past due by a couple of months.

The aroma has some hints of toffee and malt; not much else.

The taste has a very nice roast-malt flavor with faint hints of licorice and even fainter hops. I have no doubt this ale would taste better if I had a fresher bottle. The cascade hops have expired.

The ale has a pleasing, creamy mouth feel, and sweet, malty flavors linger on the palate.

A decent amber ale that I will update when I receive a fresh batch.

Nice bite to start. Finishes smooth.

Starts off with the aroma of caramel & cedar. The flavour starts with strong citrusy hops, but quickly evens out with a rush of oaky malt.

Lingers beautifully, causing you to want to go back for more.

Pours a deep golden, slightly reddish color with a nice head that packs its bags fast and leaves leaving hardly any lacing at all. Aroma is malty sweetness with hops, kind of citrusy and slightly piney. One of the better tasting red ales I have had as the hops is the star and balances well with everything else. Smooth going down and leaves a nice hop and malt aftertaste..

Pours an amber red with a crisp white head that fades quickly. Smells of roasted malts, and caramel. Nice hop presence up front balanced nicely by the rush of malts. Really nice balance with this brew. Overall really a solid brew and definitely worth a shot. I could keep a few of these on hand at all times.

Look: Nice clear amber with a white head. Nice lacing with minimal legs.

Smell: lots of floral cascade hops, sweet malt, bread crust, and a hint of bittersweet chocolate. Smells like a solid red.

Taste: Floral hops, citrus, gets balanced out by a really nice malt backbone. The finish is the best with hints of roasted malt and chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth no hint of booze.

Overall: Fantastic. Easily one of my favorite reds. Love the bouquet of cascade hops and it is balanced perfectly with the sweet malt. While most reds would rely on that this one adds a beautiful touch of roasty chocolate malt on the finish that sets it's heads and shoulders above the rest

Cask version specially brewed at Wadworth for Wetherspoon (same abv).

Brick red colour with slight offwhite head. Apple and lemon nose. Fairly syrupy feel. Slightly earthy maltiness with toffee and apple flavours before some mintiness from the hops. Goes together better than I would imagine reading the previous sentence....

A 12 ounce bottle, with a silk screened label, poured into a shaker pint glass.

Appearance - Nice copper color. Slightly hazy. A big head made up of very fine bubbles. Great stickage! A handsome beer.

Nose - Sweet malt mixed with spicy hops.

Taste - The malt backbone is a combination of sweet and toasty. The hops are zesty but not overpowering.

Mouth - Light on the pallet. Prominent carbonation.

Overall - A good beer but not a great beer. This being an Amber, I was hoping the beer would be a bit more "malt forward." On the plus side, this beer is plenty chugable. Also, this a fine looking beer in a nice looking bottle.

Color- new penny copper. Medium head.

Aroma- citrus hoppiness. Starts with a stale hoppiness, mild roasty middle, finishing with a lingering hoppiness.

Poured from 650 ml bomber into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted Jan. 2013.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 4/9/2014. Pours lightly cloudy reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, grapefruit, orange zest, floral, grass, bread, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with well balanced notes of dark/bready malt and citrus hops; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, grapefruit, orange zest, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, grapefruit, orange zest, floral, grass, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and citrus hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly creamy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice amber ale. All around good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and citrus hop flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Appearance

A smooth medium nut brown head. Heavy lacing and a wonderful non-transparent honeyed brown color with different enticing hues in the light

Nose

Fresh hops – not citrusy though which I really like and it is a refreshing and welcomed change. Phenomenal med-malt nose behind the hops accompanied by caramel and nuts

Palate

Refreshing and palate cleansing hop character with a long and delicious finish full of hops and slight caramel. Notes of caramel malt, orange, lemon, vegetal notes and a medium mouth-feel which is nice and smooth. Also has low carbonation which suits it very well.

Overall

I really enjoyed this, it was easy drinking, has a fresh hop cone taste, possessed strong, bold flavors and I found that it didn’t taste like a traditional Red-Style beer which I enjoy. It was also had a strong hop presence (in case you hadn’t noticed) that didn’t balance the beer, but accompanied the subtle- yet rich and creamy malt pretense.
