12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a semi-hazy golden color (dregs were poured in, because unfiltered IPAs are delish). The head is around two fingers, and its shade is barely off white. I'm quite impressed with both the rock-solid retention and rings of lacing left behind.

S: The nose is quite herbaceous, and even a bit savory-smelling. It doesn't quite reach onion territory, thankfully. Lesser grapefruit notes are also found. In addition, some of the malts come through with a strong biscuity character. Not sure how fresh this is, but it smells alright.

T: The hop profile is a bit strange, but not in a bad way. It's quite herbaceous and spicy, yet with a bit more definition than other herbal IPAs (can't be arsed to name examples...) It's fairly malty, as well - mostly biscuit with a hint of sweet caramel. It's probably recoil from Long Trail Chicken Marinade (oops, I mean Ramble), but there's a lot of lemongrass flavor from the hops. Still, it's only mildly bitter, which is almost miraculous considering how biting the three hop strains in this can be. Oddly, the bitterness builds a bit after a while, countering the sweetness well enough.

M: There's enough crispness along with a dry finish to help squelch some of the malty sweetness. It's a sweet IPA, just not excessively so. Carbonation is medium, and does enough to give it solid drinkability.

O: My expectations were slightly exceeded. While it's more of a sweet IPA than a bitter one, it pulls off both aspects well enough to make want to drink more than a single bottle in a sitting.

NOW I GET IT: this reminds me a lot of Two Hearted. That's nice company to be in. I'd gladly drink this again natch, but I'd prefer cans kthx.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a short white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains fruity citrus, piney hops and light caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with a strong citrus flavor. Then a strong but not over-powering hops presence comes in. The malt character is on the thin side for the style but brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a very solid IPA to drink for a long time.

Almost no haze with a golden color. Excellent lace with streaks and rings. The head was small and dissipates to rim bubbles.

Not quite clean hop smell. Low aroma of malt.

Interesting taste of peppery hop, plastic? and alcohol. Smooth body with a lower carbonation level. The aftertaste is a bit biting but allows the flavor to linger.

A - Body is very light orange bordering on straw. One finger white head, fades, leaves nice lacing and a thing layer throughout.

S - A nice blend of the various hops, citrus, pine, earthy. Not one is overpowering. Lightly toasted malts.

T - Citrus hops dominate the taste, some caramel balances it off.

M - Very smooth, light carbonation for an IPA. Medium body, drys the palate.

O - A solid IPA. Clocking in a bit heavy at 7% for my liking, but that just means I need to plan accordingly. I will revisit if the mood strikes, but first I need to try the other Coronado offerings.

Islander IPA is a blend of honey and apricot tones (and has the kind of clarity you'd get putting actual honey and apricot together through a blender). Despite the beer's natural haze it has more than enough shine to fit the 'tropic island' motif. Indeed, it's entirely clear skies - there's not even a bubble, much less a puffy cloud of white foam.

A hop bill comprised of the three C's (Columbus, Chinook, Centennial) results in three P's: pink grapefruit, peach, and passionfruit. These citric and tropical fruit flavours are laced throughout the beer, from first sniff to final sip, but are appreciated most in the bouquet.

On the palate they have to compete a little more with very toasty, light-coloured maltiness and the biscuity, bready flavours that imparts. Don't let the floral and fruity ambrosia fool you - this graininess can hold its own. It's hefty. But ultimately it is the hops that win out; the finish tastes strongly of melon and orange, with just a hint of pine.

If not for a pretty appreciable 75 IBUs and a not-so-hard-believe 7% alcohol, this has enough rose-like floralness and refreshing citrus fruitiness that it would have very broad appeal, especially in hot weather. Alas, it's not something for casual drinkers. Still, for my tastes, its lemony tang and crispy malts make it a very refreshing beer indeed.

Well done American IPAs can transport you to another place - typically somewhere tropical. And Islander IPA certainly has the citrusy hoppiness needed to "evoke imagery of swaying palms and sun-kissed shores". That being said, these visions might not be vivid enough to satisfy diehard hop-heads, but I sure felt like I got a nice vacation out of it.
