look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look – soft amber color, hazy, with about half a finger’s worth of off-white colored foam that dissipates quickly.

Smell – hoppy, sure, as one would expect from an IPA, but also with a type of sweetness, almost a fruity sweetness. Maybe even a touch of clove?

Taste – the bite of the hops first hits, and then it’s the general taste of them, but in the latter part of the middle of the taste there comes an interesting musky bitterness from something else (or maybe just a double shock of the hops themselves). The sweetness is there, hidden below, but I can’t quite tell where it comes from. Strong bitterness in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel – pretty well balanced, but does lean more toward the watery side.

Overall – not a bad brew at all. Not necessarily my favorite spectrum of the IPA, but still very interesting to think about while tasting.

Bomber w/ my FW pint glass
Bottled – 11/27/11

A: Pours a golden straw color with a slight fuzzy haze to it. Nice creamy off-white whip about 2-3 fingers deep. Looks plenty inviting. Some tracks of webbed lace down the glass.

S: Smell leads with some nice danky herbals and pine aromas. Grapefruit. Some light caramel malt sweetness.

T: Flavors start out with grapefruit, pine, and tangerine. Piney for sure. Real intense hoppage hits about midway and prickles the roof of the mouth. Some grassy whispers. Slightest caramel malt sweetness overall. Nice alcohol warmth. Very West Coast and juicy. Decent balance. Quite tasty.

M: A light to medium bodied IPA that is crisp on the finish. Sometimes creamy with a light sticky resin coat across the palate.

D: To me this is the epitome of the West Coast Style IPA. Hops are big and chalked full of fruity pines. Malt is subdued yet present with some ABV’s at 7%. Overall light, crisp, and refreshingly drinkable. Very nice.

Don’t know why Coronado seems so under the radar to me. I think they do IPA’s pretty well. Islander is good and holding up at 2 months in the bottle.

12 oz bottle

Somewhat hazy orange body with a cap of foam and nice lacing. Nice looking beer.
Malt and fruity hops in equal doses on the nose.

Malty and hoppy with a firm bitterness. Hops were fruity and piney.
Too much malt for my liking.

Decent beer overall.

Served in a 20oz imperial pint at Elephant & Castle San Diego.

A: Served a hazy bright gold color with a brilliant white cap of foam on top. Retention was very good with a few traces of lace left behind.

S: Super fresh hop aroma. Pine mixed with grapefruit and a nice undercurrent of caramel malt.

T: See above. This tasted so fresh. Loads of the aforementioned pine and grapefruit with nice malty balance.

M: Oily and spicy. Tingly hop oil that lasts well into the sticky finish.

O: Really solid AIPA. This would be in regular fridge rotation if this was my local IPA.

Serving type: on-tap

Kinda tan to orange and slightly hazy, two finger head and ok lace.

Very piney and grapefruit-ey on the nose. Taste follows, with a massive grapefruit presence, tons of pine and sweet fruity, floral hops.

Body is medium, rich and smooth, with a lightly sweet, bitter aftertaste.

I definitely want to try more from this brewery!
