I have had this a few times in the past, and this one is on the verge of becoming an lower, upper tier IPA.

Decent look. Minimal head and lace. Lower end, semi-aromatic aroma. The taste is reaching for goodness, not bad at all. The feel is almost there.

Overall - I would have this again in the future. It has definitely changed since the last time I had it on tap at Hamilton's a few years ago. (402 characters)

On-tap at The Brass Tap, Greenfield, WI - poured into snifter:

Pours hazed orange amber with a wispy head that leaves some trailing lace.

The smell is of citrus with bread, some caramel.

The taste is of citrus, bread, some caramel. Earthy/peppery spicing in the finish. Some alcohol shows in the bitter finish.

A pleasantly spicy, dry, hop-forward but with plenty of malt backing, DIPA. (391 characters)

For a double IPA was expecting a bit more. But it's not a bad beer at all just didn't seem like a double IPA. Nice color, slight citrus scent. Not as hoppy as expected. (169 characters)

Right down the middle across the board. Pretty disappointed given the price I paid for a bomber. Not very hoppy at all for a DIPA, and just heavy in general. Wouldn't buy again. Not bad, but certainly not good either... (219 characters)

Aroma: Very lemon intense and citrus forward aroma. Warming alcohol on the nose. Clean fermentation character.

Appearance: Nearly clear amber pour with a high white cap that fades quickly but retains well and leaves sticky lacing. Effervescence noted.

Flavor: Up front lemony bitterness. Background bready malt character. Balance is to the hop bitterness. More grapefruit and orange peel on subsequent tasting. Finish is powdery and dry. Aftertaste lingers with lemon bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Slight hop derived astringency with warmth on the tongue.

Overall impression: A very clean, citrus forward Double IPA. Glad they distribute in OH. Thanks to @Tammisbutler for the sample! (738 characters)

Pours with little to no head. Looks very nice, smells kinda weak for a DIPA. The taste is almost like a single hop, not very dynamic but good. Lots of malt in the front, Bitterness in the back nothing too crazy though. Nonetheless, an above average DIPA, with a very good balance between a malt and hops. (303 characters)

Picked up a four pack at a local grocery store (Gnoches). I didn't know it when I purchased, but the etching at the bottom of the bottle displayed 05/07/14 - a year ago.
Drank a bottle that sat for a little while (10 min.) last night - boozy - and another for today's review.
A: Honeyed opaque with a tremendous number of carb sprigs and what looks like small yeast chunks with a finger thick frothy head - Looks delicious. Lacing shimmers on the side and ringing follows each draught. Really nice display.
S: Some malt presence, with a slight grapefruit scent. Some dankness but not much. IPA? DIPA?
T: Bitter. Muted grapefruit? Hoppy, but not of the floral or fruity variety. Bitter throughout.
M: Creamy and thick up front with a medium malty, but slick, fullness in the finish.
O: A warming bitter ale. Not what I expected when I saw 'West Coast' IPA; not floral, fruity, or fragrant, but unique in it's own way. Straightforward hop bitter presence (early kettle?), but very little flavor. I'll have to revisit this ale as I think the year in the bottle may have degraded the fresh hop flavor and the bitter hallmarks were unmasked. Despite the curve ball, I still enjoyed it as a change of pace if anything. (1,214 characters)

This is my first review. Went to the British Beer Company. Asked for this and they asked if I wanted a sample. I said no, I've never had a bad IPA (kind of like Pizza, it has to be really bad not to like it.) I can say I've has many IPA's and did a x-country road trip so has some local ones. Anyway, to me this was almost undrinkable. It tasted more like whiskey, than beer. And I don't like whiskey. Anyway, I'm probably not what you'd call a connoisseur (I like Dale's Pale Ale and Long Trail IPA). Is there a reason it tasted "bitter"? (to use another reviewer's term). (573 characters)

This isn't bad, but I dig Coronado's seasonal IPA's over this year round Double IPA. It has a nice big bigger first sip, and it stays as the beer warms. The malt character is well balanced with the bitter hops. Grapefruit is the only fruit a get with this beer, with some pine needles in the background. (303 characters)

I was disappointed with the lack of hoppiness, as this is an Imperial IPA. Cloudy golden in appearance. Literally no head and minimal lacing. Aroma of booziness and tangerines. It gets better as it warms though. (213 characters)

On tap. It pours a clear deep gold which shows great lacing with no bubbles at all. I liked the resinous piney hops in both aroma and taste but the sweet malts are not exciting at all and the mouthfeel is poor, with no signs of carbonation. I expected more from this "fresh" West Coast IPA (i trust the place), and i wonder if it just travels bad or it needs to improve on the balance department. Nice hops, bit empty and boring. (429 characters)

Grapefruit rind nose portends a big, bitter hoppy palate well balanced by rich malts and large pitted fruit flavors. Finishes with a lingering bitterness. Pours brilliant gold with a shite foam cap. (198 characters)

This is a good but not great dipa. the further into the bottle I got the more complex the flavors were, which improved the experience. Totally interesting but not quite on point. (178 characters)

Draft in a SoCal restaurant in imperial pint glass. Very ordinary ipa with little to no complexity. Piney, almost acrid. Can't detect anything tropical as other tasters. (169 characters)

Reddish golden clour of medium straw and honey. Half inch of head and medium lacing.

Aroma of sweet malt and piney and butterscotch candy.

The complex taste comes in 4 phases. First a rich maltiness of sweet creamy taste with a touch of smokiness. Then a burst of hops - pine and citrus and grass. Back to malty taste with real oakiness. Finally a long pieny/grassy aftertaste. Excellent.

Creamy rich feel. A bit light for an Imperial.

Very nice. The oak and smoke really makes it Imperial. Very mality. Complex (515 characters)

Well, I feel like an idiot - don't include the bottom contents of the bottle unless you want to completely muck up the appearance. The seemingly pulpy, almost honeycomb-like second pour is hardly recognizable from the clear, blistered golden tones of the first.

The aroma combines the contents of pine and fruit trees; at once rich and resiny as well as bright and tropical, this bouquet has its bitter and earthy elements but retains the sweet, enticing scents of mango, pineapple and pear. Warming reveals an underlying note of toffee.

All that's wonderful about the nose is replayed on the palate. A hearty base of malt provides a biscuity, lightly caramelly launching point for a vast array of tropical fruit flavours. To me it tastes like mango most of all (dried as well as fresh varieties) but one could imagine an array of exotic jungle fruits.

8.5% alcohol is certainly nothing to scoff at, but it is a manageable amount; this brewer used enough malt and ensured enough citrusy flavours that it goes entirely unnoticed. Bitterness is a good distraction too, though that too is well concealed. I no longer wonder why they left the 'D' out of "IPA" on the label.

Idiot IPA is a stupidly drinkable beer. Such an approachable hop-bomb with such agreeable citrus and tropical fruit flavours is an absolute no-brainer in the portfolio of any brewer worth his mash paddle - it's how California put itself on the map. Anyone with access to this would have to be an idiot not to buy it. (1,491 characters)

Great IPA poured from the bottle. Good smell with a mixture of citrus fruit and pine. Clean color and taste as well. Taste was crisp and hoppy, but overly so. Hop character was a good balance of pine and citrus and the beer had a bit of tropical aftertaste. It was also a relatively heavy tasting beer with a high ABV. Although a high ABV makes this double IPA even better and would highly recommend it. (403 characters)

Slightly cloudy dark orange with a small off-white head.
Caramel and peach juice on the nose, mango, blood orange, tangerine, persimmon, light pine, biscuit. A pinch of salt. Not too hoppy, but might be overly sweet.
Love it when the taste proves the smell wrong. Big juicy fruitiness up front, citrus and tropical fruit: pineapple, mango, pomelo, peach, tangerine, pink grapefruit, all smothered in caramel. Doesn't get overly sweet, with some bitter citrus peel and slightly salted grainy biscuit leading into pine and bitter dry grassy hops (certainly Nugget hop providing that).
A floral note lingers in the aftertaste, along with some citrus peel, some tropical fruit pulp and pine. Medium body, medium carbonation, just a bit sticky.
A great mix of tasty hops, a really solid IIPA with pretty intense tropical notes, tho generic. (835 characters)

A: Poured from the bomber into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is hazy golden/orangey with a sliver of a white head on top. Some legs of lace.

S: Caramel malt is surprisingly noted on the nose. Only modest hops - a touch of citrus (grapefruit).

T: Like the nose, it's sweeter than expected (and sweeter than I prefer) for a DIPA. Some brown sugar and caramel malt foundation is followed by fruity hops - a bit of citrusy grapefruit and a hint of pineapple. Sweetness and bitterness battle in the aftertaste, with neither side really prevailing. Again, for a DIPA, that's not what I want; I want to be slaughtered by hop bitterness lingering well after the sip. . .

M: Medium-to-full in body, carbonation is adequate but fairly low-key.

O: OK. Sweeter than I like for a DIPA (788 characters)

Not a bad example of a DIPA, but not amazing either. Look was good, flavor was pretty good, but seemed a bit harsher than most IPA's and DIPA's. Not flavor wise, but in a 'gave me heartburn' sort of a way. Not sure if it was something in the brew or an off batch. Mouth feel was a bit more carbonated than I like as well. Very foamy and soapy.

I will not search this one out and purchase again, but would consider drinking again if available. Unless the heartburn feeling comes back and then I would turn it away completely. (526 characters)

12 oz bottle was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a puffy layer. It is an orange yellow color with good clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Nice lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Citrus, herbal, piney, grassy, some alcohol, candy caramel sweetness, and bready malts.

Taste: You pick up some bitterness in the rear along with everything else. The heat of the alcohol could chill down a little bit, but still bearable.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, some alcohol, tingly bitterness, and medium carbonation.

Overall: It's been sometime, but still as tasty as I remember. Will be drinking more of these in the future too. (740 characters)

Pours a yellowish-amber, cloudy color. Head is frothy and crunchy. Head retains well and lacing sticks nicely to the side of the pint glass !!. Aroma is of insane amounts of citrus, piney hops, so, so much orange and pine !!!!!!!. Taste is not as intense as the aroma would lead you to believe, but the taste is awesome, with lots of flavors coming through, grapefruit, grapefruit rind, tropical hints, fresh orange and hop resin, there is a lot going on here. Beer is cool and citrusy on the palate and the alcohol is well hidden. Feels great going down and verydrinkable. Hop heads will love this beer with its great mix of various hops!! (640 characters)

Pours a cloudy orange with a bit of soapy lacing.

Smell is very fruity. Mandarin and tropical fruits.

Taste is similar. Expecting maybe a tad more sweetness. Bitterness does well here, though. Grapefruit and apricot in there.

Surprisingly crisp and quick mouthfeel.

A solid IIPA. Would drink again. (304 characters)

Having an Idiot IPA at my favorite watering hole. One of the reasons it's my favorite is he rotates his taps frequently so I can get beers I've never had before, like this one. The only problem is that it was not sold to me as a Double or Imperial, so I'm on my second one and suddenly feeling the alcohol affects more than I'd like. I like this beer a lot. It has a great balance between the hops and malt. As far as hops go, I personally prefer the "pine" side of the scale as opposed to the "grapefruit" side, and Idiot IPA suits my tastes fantastically. As I said, I did not hesitate to order a 2nd beer. Somewhat creamy and full bodied, but the taste does not linger as long as you'd expect. The color is a bit lighter as well. Looking at the other reviews I'm glad I had the opportunity to get this on tap as opposed to being bottled. (845 characters)
