A fairly easy to find DIPA in these parts, typically found in a bomber featuring a rather attractive blue label with the paint somehow etched into the glass (there's probably an artistic term for this that eludes me) and a humorous state of Colorado warning that said paint contains cadmium. So long as the beer doesn't I am happy. The contents pour a light gold to orange amber with ample light orange head that quickly tames to release a strong aroma of grapefruit and orange citrus, sweet apple juice, and caramel malt. The surprisingly sweet aroma is largely mirrored in the palate, at least initially. Very sweet and somewhat sour combination of honey/caramel malts, grapefruit citrus, tropical fruits (musky passion fruit and guava, a little mango) and other floral perfume notes (honeysuckle?) lead the way, along with some warming but well-concealed alcohol (at 8.5% ABV this one will get ya if you have the entire bomber, which I did). However, the wet finish does feature some pungent pine resins and citrus pith. As is the case for a few other hop bomb DIPAs, the spicy pine and medicinal camphor flavors get stronger as you go, your lips get a bit numb and an interesting green fruit note like gooseberry emerges in the finish as well. I get a coppery metallic ting throughout. One of the things I really like about DIPAs is this evolving complexity over the course of a pint or bottle, with things often starting caramel sweet and fruity but eventually getting wickedly piney and bitter, at which point the endorphins show up and meld nicely with the booze to yield a decent buzz and even a potentially spiritual experience. Haha. This particular example follows this mold, very tropical up front and finishing with some classic coarse Chinook hop piney bitterness. I might have provided higher ratings had the malts been a bit less cloying and the booze a tad less aggressive ... There was a bit of a cider effect going on at times which I consider a fault in a DIPA. Still, no shame in spending an evening with this idiot.

Nice to see a new line of Cali beers here in Greensboro.Poured into a imperial pint glass a hazed mix of burnt orange and copper,a tight formed one finger egg shell colored head atop.Big citric and floral aromas, really fresh and pungeant.Flavors are not overly sweet and alcoholic like alot of DIPA's,big resiny hop flavors with some citric fruitiness, the malt is sweetish and holds up well to the hops. The alcohol is well hidden and it stills packs a pretty good hop punch,a nice beer.

Appearance - This is a beauty shop. The golden liquid is lightly toned with orange and the beautiful white head puffed up just right and showed great retention.

Smell - This has a righteous hop bouquet and is perfectly balanced with pine, herbs, and a wonderful juicy orange citrus. The malts though are largely absent.

Taste - The grain comes out more in the taste. It is a bit rough around the edges but still quite pleasant. The hops flavor is just as good at the tongue as it was on the nose. The citrus that I enjoyed so much at the smell comes on even a bit more at the taste.

Mouthfeel - This is medium-bodied but just barely with some light carbonation and a good amount of bitterness.

Drinkability - This is an easy-going ale. If it really is a double it's borderline though, but classifications aside it is quite enjoyable.

A bomber poured into a snifter. Gold/amber color, slight haze. Thick off-white head resembling whipped cream. A lot of lace.

A lot of sweet malt in the aroma. Big citrus aroma also, as well as some peppery hops.

Predominately grapefruit taste, sweet biscuit, late piney hops.

One of the sweetest DIPAs I've tried. Well-hopped, not overly aggressive. Very smooth.

Will look for this again during my stay in Albuquerque.

Coronado Idiot IPA, 2010

Pours resembles a non filtered copper cider with a resilient white head. Strong smell of oranges and pine trees. The taste is a bright boquet of hops, hops, hops, and more hops that lingers on the tongue for an extended amount of time. The body is crisp, yet strong enough to please any pallet any time of the year. If you're not a hop lover than choose to pass.

A- On tap less than 1finger head, quickly gone. Nice golden to copper tones and slightly hazey. Mountains of lacing on the glass and legs that look like waterfalls.

S-strawberry and citrus noted very heavy. Nice fruity and balanced smell. Medium hop character to the nose.

T- balanced fruity bitterness:
Pine, Strawberry, grapefruit, and and tangerine finish.

M-medium carbonation on the front of the tongue and a bite from enough hops in the back of the palate. Smooth finish with a slightly dry mouthfeel.

O- a nice DIPA that packs enough punch at 8.5, this one I consider a solid choice.

Bomber bottle, w/o freshness/bottling info. Purchased in Southington, CT

Darker amber, clouded, frothy, fine, lasting and leaving nice looking and extensive lace...

Hopped up nose, god I love San Diego DIPAs....

Dense and hop infused DIPA. Hops crunching...smooth, tasty and highly enjoyable...Definitely going to buy more of this at the next opportunity

Appearance is pale and a bit hazy. That might be chill haze.

Smell is wonderful - mostly tropical, with some citrus. For the hops on the bottle, I'm surprised there's so little pine.

There's some pine in the flavor, but not much else. I don't get much malt, although it doesn't taste like hop tea so there's "enough" there. I'm a non-taster, so I can't tell you how much bitterness is in this brew, but I'm guessing it's what us East-Coasters call a "hop bomb".

Mouthfeel is good - enough sweetness to linger, without being thick.

Overall, this is a nice IPA in terms of hop aroma and flavor, but not something I could drink a lot of.

Pours clear auburn with a stocky white head. Rich aroma of piney hops, grapefruit, and a bit of peaches. Oily mouthfeel. Tangy citrus flavors mix well with the resiny and peppery hops. Still that hint of peaches. Kind of makes it taste lighter than it is. Good stuff.
