Sharp looking beer. A bit dark for a 'pale' ale, a darkish amber/orange color. The head is thick and frothy, and a contrasting brilliant white. Good retention and sticky lacing as it eventually dissipates.

The West Coast would be proud, as it's all about citric flavors. There is some malt breadiness, but it's mostly citrus fruits and pine that fill the nose.

Taste is similar to the smell. Piney, citric, bready.

It's got a medium body and is full of bitter. But the bitter is managed well by the malt profile. A bit sticky in the finish, with some bitter that stays with you a while.

Very drinkable for the type. It's certainly a hop bomb, but I can still feel my tongue, so it's not offensive. One of the best DIPAs I've had the joy of trying.

Hazy orange ochre with a fluffy head that eventually kicked to a soap scum layer. 4.0

Macerated orange, pineapple, and grapefruit hop nose. Slight doughy maltiness from sweetness. 4.0

Bitter orange, rooibos, grapefruit, caramel, and bready malt. Maltier than I expected. Finishes less bitter. Lots of hop flavors, some floral. 4.0

Well-carbonated. Almost spicy with carb. The sweetness doesn't stick much. Light-medium body. Decent. 4.0

Nothing exceptional, but I still like this beer a lot. I recommend. 3.5

A: half finger head on a clear golden amber body. Very nice lacing.

S: citrus, mostly grapefruit, and slight grassy note. Fairly full nose.

T: Very hoppy with a wide variety of hip notes including floral, pine, citrus and earthy. Malts are present but mildly so.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: Excellent malt profile and not too boozy. A must try for iperaial IPA lovers.

22oz bottle, from the decent selection at the Kahala Whole Foods in the semi-suburban mall-scape of Honolulu.

This beer pours a clear medium golden amber colour, with two fingers of tight foamy off-white head, which leaves an impressive tree canopy vista of lace around the glass as it sinks away.

It smells of grapefruit, orange, pine and some further tropical fruit, over a lesser bready honeyed caramel malt sweetness. The taste is more intense grapefruit, mixed citrus, and pine resin hops, a fairly hefty sugary caramel/toffee backbone, and a slight, simmering undertone of alcohol.

The carbonation is moderately twangy, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and sassy-smooth. It finishes still quite strongly hoppy, but actually more in tune with the latent caramelized malt, and understated alcohol, kept tight to breast to this point.

A more or less (ok, more) prototypical example of the west coast big-ass IPA. Everything is bigger, better, and somehow balanced, which is usually the trick, ain't it? Drinkable as all get out, if hop monsters are your thing. I'll be over in the corner, um, well, use your imagination.

Bottles in Bellevue, WA, way different. Fresh. Dank. Cat piss. Bright hops. Clean. Smooth. Light, dry and crisp.

Old update from 5/7/2012 - show's what happens when you drink west coast IPA on draught in Pitt! Previous score was 4/ 3/ 2.5 / 3.5 /2.5!!!
On draught at Mad Mex, Idiot is gold with a white head leaving pretty heavy, foamy lace.

Smell is dirty malt and some hop resin. Dissapointingly hoppy for these guys.

Taste is even worse, strong dirty alcohol and cheap malt. Sharpness to the malt, the sweet tea crystal is exaggerated by the fusels and citric hops. Resinous, pungent aftertaste makes it at least within the style, if a sub-par example.

Mouthfeel is on the chewy, oily side.

Drinkability is low. Not too good. At least the biterrness of the hops numbs the palate. Disappointing, and at $7.50 a pint (yay pgh! ;), a major pass.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass, bottled sometime in late 2011 can't tell if it is 10, 11, or 12 of 2011. Pours a cloudy reddish orange, with a one inch sticky head, that leaves a ring of lace. Smell is tangerine, pine, grass, and hints of grapefruit. Taste is similar with grapefruit and some hard candy. Body is medium, plenty of life, not very dry, and drinks easy enough. Wish the place that put a case of beer together could tell me that the IPA was over 6 months old. I am sure the score would be higher if it wasn't so past its prime. Not bad, especially considering its age.

Bomber from Pavillions Palm Desert for 6.49$

Appearance - Slightly hazy amber/copper colour with an average size fizzy and frothy off white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for 5 minutes and there were some small particles floating around in the beer.

Smell - Malts, caramel, grapefruit, lots of resin/hops, tangerines, apricot

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste tons of hops, malts, and caramel. There is also a good amount of fruit flavours like apricots, tangerines, pineapple, and grapefruit. It ends with a fruity yet quite bitter hop aftertaste.

Overall - This beer is definitely under rated in my opinion. It reminded me of a mix of sculpin and green flash. I've only had 2 coronado brews so far, but I loved them both and will be sure to check out the rest of their line up. If you like west coast style IPA/DIPA's, give this beer a try.
