pours a dark brown with a small tan head, and great lacing.

smell is faint, barely malts, some caramel, and a hint of dark fruits.

taste is thick, roasted malt, a touch of grain, and some hops in the back, ends dry and a little bitter.

overall a pretty good barelywine.

On Tap at Blue Dog. 2010 Vintage.

Old Scallywag goes into the glass looking a burnt brown with some mahagony shades and a touch of red up to the light. A nice firm dark beige cap of suds up top with some cling to it. Smell is certainly hoppy, piney with that West Coast love. Grains are apparent and some caramel scent when some time passes. Small bits of alcohol. Taste is just, well, not hacking it. IMO this is just a str8 up american strong ale even though I know the style lines are blurred. This does not have the malt backbone and caramel toffee and other rich flavors to classify it as EBW. Insanely bitter and the alcohol just rushes up on the tounge. This is more in vain with an American Barleywine. The body is on point, it's a nice healthy medium, with some nice carb off the tap. This beer is not dead in any way. I wanted to like this cause I love Coronado Brewing, but this one does not cut the mustard. If this is the base for their BA Barleywine, I'll pass on that as well, althought the honey used in that may impart some nice flavors. Old Scallywag is something different altogether.

8 oz. pour at Stone Brewery. Dirty brown and opaque. Little head but some lace. Malty aroma, fruity. Heavy-ish mouthfeel. Sweet up front but not too sweet. Alcohol is well disguised. Carbonation bite, almost like a bottled brew. Bitter back end. I'm not a barley wine drinker, but thought this one was well done.
