On-tap @ Blue Palms Brewhouse in Hollywood - served in a nonic.

Too dark in this cavernous corner to evaluate color beyond "brown" with a light tan head. Very dark beer, though it actually seems to have good clarity. Art-nouveau lacing adorns the rim. Decent retention.

Walnuts, brown bread, chocolate malt balls and light grains and hops in the nose. Subtle and restrained.

Astringent, bitter-sweet palate entry with vienna roast coffee, cocoa powder, and roasted barley. Mild but persistent bitterness from hops emerges next, unfurling into the bready, earthy, asphalt-tinged finish. Quite nice.

Creamy, not-quite-medium-bodied with excellent carbonation.

Balanced, refreshing, toasty, strong yet sessionable example of the style.
