Good solid refreshing DIPA. I'm not sure why people are giving this a sub par review. Or maybe because I live where they brew this I always get it fresh. IMHO Sock Knocker is Coronado's best IPA in their lineup. Great refreshing grapefruit notes definitely trying to profile after Sculpin. Great beer!

Cloudy, gold color. Frothy head that settles slowly and in a lumpy fashion. Webby lace on the glass.

Beyond the usual IPA smells of mostly floral hop and a solid malt base, there appears to be a cooked cabbage-like sourness. A bit distracting.

Solid malt start to this DIPA. The hop never kicks in as viciously as most. The aftertaste is lengthy but mild. Most noticeable is the warming alcohol which is omnipresent. The carbonation is quite low and the body is appropriate for the style. Overall, it comes across as creamy. This is an easy to drink DIPA.

22oz bottle. I like the California Prop warning on the side of the label - I guess I shan't be licking the outside of the bottle now, huh, or allowing my potentially pregnant wife to either?

This beer pours a hazy, tarnished medium golden yellow hue, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and rocky eggshell white head, which leaves some decent craggy, gnarled tree branch lace around the glass as it graciously subsides.

It smells of musty, somewhat dank pine needles and petrichor, orange, tangerine, and grapefruit (the subtleties are there, I swear!) rind, bready, crackery pale malt, a bit of concrete dust, and further floral, grassy, and mildly perfumed hops. The taste is actually malt-forward (who'd a thunk it?), a grainy caramel/toffee sweetness appearing as if out of thin air, sublimating the poor pale ale notes of titular lore, and likewise pushing the forest floor and fresh fruit bowl citrus players aside, but hardly out of the game. The booze, for its part, starts to act like it knows the owner, and wheedles its way inside, farther than maybe it should.

The bubbles are fairly sedate, but still well supportive, the body a stoic medium-full weight, and more or less smooth, the hops sort of looking the other way, but in their absence, the booze just sidles right in. It finishes off-dry, the now retreating caramel malt taking with it the memory of that day it bested an otherwise stellar array of citrusy, piney, leafy, floral, dank, grassy - well you get the idea - hops.

I should really give this one another go against the Idiot DIPA from this very outfit - I don't recall enjoying that one as much as am currently slobbering all over this one. They've kept it all-American in the hop bill, so kudos for not succumbing to the temptation of antipodean enhancers, as it were. Nope, still big 'n brash 'n West Coast to the nuts - and thanks, I guess, for keeping my proverbial socks intact, and for making me look forward to the rest of this bomber!
