I almost didn't buy this beer, and actually waited until the very last bottle at my go to bottle shop. A trusted IPA friend said that this wasn't the typical west coast IPA from Coronado, but more similar to the lighter hopped, strong sweet malt style I love from Florida and the east coast. I definitely appreciate him telling me to buy this. The only bad thing about this beer is the appearance. The color is a nice orange, but even after several vigorous pours, I got extremely little head; and zero lacing. Th smell is of bright orange, slightly boozier than I'd like, quite floral (hibiscus/orange blossom), and a tinge of hop bitterness. Taste follows aroma, but less boozy. Mouthfeel is light and hoppy but not light in a watery kind of way. Really enjoyable brew; probably my favorite from Coronado so far!

Pours orange/amber with a large white head.
Nose shows sweet malt, booze, pine and some sweet passion fruit and orange marmalade too.
Similar flavours, lots of sweet clean malt but lots of piny, resinous hops and a little pear and lychee too.
Could use a bit more carbonation.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Sam Adams "perfect" pint glass. Didn't see a bottled on date, but I believe this was just released.

A - Light orange color. Eggshell colored head that leaves good lacing.

S - Big nose. Orange, peach, apricot, mango, catpiss. Really nice.

T - Follows nose. Lots of orange, peach, apricot, mango. Very juicy. No sign of the 9.5% ABV. Bitterness is also there, but also very muted. The tropical flavors really shine all the way thru.

M - This where I am on the fence. For DIPA, it has a lighter, watery mouthfeel. But this beer doesn't drink like a DIPA, so the light body fits and is very refreshing.

O - I really enjoyed this one. A nice refreshing beer. It doesn't drink like a DIPA and has some great tropical flavors.

Another year passes by, and Coronado is all of a sudden celebrating their 17th year. As part of the celebration comes an Imperial IPA brewed with Citra, Green Bullet, Pacific Gem, Pacific Jade, and Wakatu hops. Not sure if it's an Imperial IPA or a hop orgy. I have 22 ounces to decide. On to the beer:

Below the inch of semi-creamy head which retains okay is the orange colored body. Per style, I was hoping I would see a more impressive display of lace than the few spots I see. I like the aroma, but I was anticipating that I would. Not extreme with the intensity. Pleasant with a fruity hoppiness, melons, pine, and a crackery base.

That's a taste I can like. Despite a heat of alcohol making its presence heard, this is one tasty Imperial IPA. It tastes like a fruit salad. First comes the taste of honeydew and cantaloupe. Solid dry cracker base keeps the hops under some control. Toffee crisp and more fruity hops. A bit of that alcohol cuts through the hops and malt and gives the beer a drier aftertaste with lingering dry notes of, you guessed it, hops.

Five different hops, one great beer. Coronado did their homework figuring out a very good 17th Anniversary Ale. Now comes the tough part, figuring out what to brew for number 18.
