Quite ambitious are the unofficial microbrewers at Louisiana State, in that right out of the gate they tackle not only a hoppy "black" ale but an imperialized one at that. Now let's see if this beast of a beer will live up to its name...

Dark to the point that its just a shade off from black, its edges reveal its bark-brown hue. Its mirror-like clarity gives the ale an onyx-like sheen. As the beer's foam patiently separates from its body, it layers the beer with a sandy-tan blanket of foam. Intricate lacing patters decorate the glass in the beer's wake.

The epitome of malt is reached with a trifecta of aromatics. Burnt caramel, roast and over-baked biscuit creates everything to sweet to char and with a starchy scent for extra measure. But the story isn't really about the malt- its about the hops- the roasted peels of grapefruits, oranges and even pineapples command the nose more and more as the beer warms. A final touch of fresh sawdust come to mind heading into that first sip.

With the taste that ensues, the burnt sweetness of caramel, oak and nuttiness begins to couple with the almost-smoky taste of burnt embers, dry cocoa and freshly ground coffee for a fully rounded dark malt taste. As the hops lurk in the middle palate, they rise midway through its taste with all those grilled citrus flavor and culminate in a resinous, bitter pine cone finish. Still, there's a sense of char that exists without allowing any ash flavor.

Creamy and smooth like Porter but somewhat restrained in roast to resemble Stout- this beer does exactly what darker IPAs should- it leads with hop dominance and allows the roasted bitterness and astringency of roasted malt to accent its hop bitterness and dryness. Executed esquisitely- the ale finishes semi-dry, as do most Imperial IPAs, but does so with a heavily toasted balance instead of that of caramel.

Without ever knowing the Rougarou fable, this dark and ominous beer sells its story well. And as its taste goes, the beer is an IPA first and accents with dark grain. The last thing we want in "Black IPAs" is a hoppy Porter or Stout.

I was hoping based on the reviews this would be a bit more like a stout, but I got barely any stout here, except for the black appearance and light tan head.

Smell: not much going on here, some faint toffee notes, a little floral from the hops. Can't tell it's triple dry hopped from the smell.

Taste: lots of pine, lots of citrus and floral. Don't really find any coffee notes. Maybe some bitter dark chocolate. The triple hopped description can be found in the taste. It's quite hoppy.

Mouthfeel: pretty average. good carbonation, and quite sticky from the hops.

Overall: I guess there is some potential here if they can develop more of a roasted malt backbone. Maybe add some brewed coffee in future batches that could turn out brilliantly.

A - Has a black body with a khaki one finger head. Not much lacing/retention to speak of.

S - Roasty, a little coffee and few hops really.

T - Bitter chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and a piney hop bite at the end.

M - Light bodied, medium carbonation with a dry finish.

O - Needs more aroma and a beefier body. Solid base to work with to make this beer great.

Appearance: Jet black with a thin dark brown head that fades relatively slowly, solid chunky lacing.

Smell: Very smoky and roasty, reminiscent of a porter, followed by some earthy notes and some pine and maybe some oak.

Taste: Citrus hops, lots of pine, but a bit of the porter-charcter from the aroma, with some smoke and coffee.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a good amount of bitterness. Not a huge hop bomb but definitely hoppy and a bit sticky.

Overall: I like this, but it isn't amazing. Definitely has a load of potential but it seems like it could use more balance.

Dark, black pour, light brown head. The aroma caries a more stout-like aroma, which begs curiosity to the triple dry hopping that they claim. There's plenty roast, toffee, chocolate, and coffee on the nose, but the hop notes are minimal. Maybe some floral hops. Taste is chocolaty, roasty, coffee, floral, piny, and a pretty high bitterness. Its dry, medium bodied.

Its good, but could use some refinement. There's gobs of potential and overall, I like it.
