A standard pour of Tin Roof Brewing's Watermelon Wheat yields a clear, golden body capped by a snow-white head with some staying power. Other reviewers have written that this beer's head disappears quickly without a trace. My head fell slowly, left a touch of lacing on the side of my pint glass, and even left a bit of appealingly sticky residue atop the body. The beer's carbonation isn't as appealing. Large bubbles dart quickly towards the top. Fizzy mouthfeel?

The nose is interesting, though not as appealing as I had hoped. Watermelon is strong, sweet, and almost overpowering. I hope this beer isn't cloyingly sweet. Toasted wheat malts are appreciable. Are those faint hints of banana and clove that I detect? Or is my mind playing tricks on me?

The taste doesn't have much to recommend it. The Jolly Rancher candy watermelon flavor is cloyingly sweet. One would htink that some hoppy bitterness would offset the sweetness, but no such luck here. In fact, the two clashed so strongly in the first sip that I'm reluctant to take another. Mild spicy notes don't do much to make things more palatable. No thanks.

Watermelon, clove, banana, toasted kamut, and hop flowers should be a winning combination. If I were on the brewing team at Tin Roof, I'd get rid of the watermelon flavoring and brew this beer with some real watermelon thrown into the vats. The subtlety and crispness of watermelon would contribute to, rather than contrast with, the wheat beer's crisp, refreshing qualities. But for now, well, I've taken three sips of this beer. The rest is going down the kitchen sink.

On tap @ Cooter Brown's.

Pours a mostly clear, pale color with a white finger of head.

Supposedly a hint of watermelon, but I found it quite watermelon forward. Some wheat notes and bready malts.

The watermelon was a more of a hint in the taste. Lightly sweet, somewhat grainy and bready, and there is some tastes of noble hops on the finish.

It's light in body, crisp and undeniably refreshing.

Not yet in cans, but I'll be looking for em. Not bad at all.

Tin Roof Watermelon Wheat has a thick, white, soapy head, and a hazy, orange-yellow appearance, which clouds up even more when the bottom of the can is swished and poured in. There are some bubble streams and a bit of thin lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet watermelon and white bread, and the flavor is of watermelon, watermelon seeds, watermelon rind, rye spice, white wheat bread, hop bitterness, and an underlying white corn grit aspect. Mouthfeel is medium and vegetable slimy, and Tin Roof Watermelon Wheat finishes dry, refreshing, easy drinking, and weird. This oddity is interesting, at least.

The first thing I noticed was the "not too sweet" taste of watermelon, which works well in a wheat beer. Head retention is not really there and dissipates quickly. Lightly carbonated; almost feels and tastes like drinking fruit juice, but without sweet. I don't know who first created a watermelon wheat beer, but Tin Roof sure did a good job.
