A valentine from my lovely wife. Dark as coffee, with a weak transient head. Good nose of coffee and chocolate, maybe vanilla, decent mouth feel, sweetness balance, and finish for a porter. I'm thinking it might improve as it warms a bit. Much better than the Gnarly Barley Korova from down the road.

Sixer/$10.49 USD plus tax at a Total Wine & More in Metairie, Louisiana, USA. 12 fl oz pull-tab can...no canned on or best before date.

"Coffee Porter." "Malt Beverage with Natural Flavor." "Smooth Porter full of coffee & chocolate flavor." No ABV is listed on the label/can.

Served cold into a stemless wine glass

APPEARANCE: Khaki-tan head. Opaque black body. ~3-4cm head height; ~5 minute head retention.

Looks well carbonated. Appears as a porter should without dazzling.

AROMA: Simple coffee roast...not terribly intricate or deep, but it's recognizably coffee with a bit of roastiness and some Java earthiness. Doesn't seem fruity, Sumatran, bitter, or delicate in its coffee aroma.

Chocolate? I don't find it...maybe some faint chocolate malt at most. I wouldn't say it evokes mocha, latte, or espresso notes.

There's barely any dark malt sweetness aromatically...the coffee eclipses everything else despite not being all that robust.

Aromatic intensity is average for the style.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Soft on the palate which clashes with its upfront bitterness...this is coffee-forward alright, but the coffee is neither mellow nor deep...it's a biteen harsh to be honest, failing to evoke quality coffee. It's not your acrid Folger's brew, but it's far from delicate. Lacks the fruitiness, delicate feel, subtle earthiness, or deeply roasty flavour of a fine coffee...I doubt the coffee used was terribly high quality.

Not chocolatey to me. Doesn't evoke mocha, latte, espresso, Sumatra, Yirgacheffe, or similar.

Wet, unrefreshing, light to medium-bodied, well-carbonated, and a bit on the thin side for the style. Certainly acidic, but that accentuates the beer's harshness on the palate to its detriment instead of complementing anything enjoyable.

I can't say it's terribly well balanced, nor is it very complex - which makes its relative lack of balance less excusable.

OVERALL: Is it a good Porter? Not particularly. Nor is it a good coffee ale, the porter bit aside. It marries a slightly harsh overacidic coffee flavour to a simplistic shallow Porter base (with no real malt flavours, surprisingly) and the result is an imbalanced beer that compares unfavorably to something like Parish Brewing's Reve (if we're sticking to semilocal competition) and very poorly to a top tier coffee ale like Founders' Breakfast Stout. You need to choose better coffee and utilize it better when you're brewing a coffee beer, and you need the base beer to have a life of its own...this ultimately falls short on both counts.

I tried this at Beer Fest on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. It poured an opaque dark with thin tan head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent is coffee. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with coffee influence. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a decent porter.

Looks and smells alright with a decent coffee nose. Taste doesn't follow though. Yes, I know that the abv isn't that high, but I expected a lot more flavor than this thin and watery beer.

Pours brown. Foamy, short, tan head fades fast to a faint ring.

Smells coffee, roast malt, chocolate and hints of vanilla.

Tastes coffee, roast malt, light chocolate and light vanilla. Followed by a light fruitiness. Finish is dry with a roasty and earthy bitterness. Lighter medium body and creamy medium carbonation

Pours a ruby-hued mahogany with 2 fingers of khaki colored head. Dissapointing head retention & lacing

S: Coffee, roastyness & a little smokeyness, great nose

T: Coffee, vanilla, roasty dryness up front. Mpre coffee & roastyness as this warms, the vanilla sweetness gives way to dryness. Finishes roasty with a little lactic twang & coffee grinds

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, body thins a bit as it warms, still solid

Drinks easy, the best beer I've had from these guys

Poured from a can to a pint glass. Dark mahogany colored when held up to the light. Not much head at all. Smell was very sweet, almost like my favorite coffee stout, but was a little disappointed in the taste, which wasn't bad, just more like French roasted, bitter coffee. Slippery feel in the mouth. Strong ashy/toasty aftertaste. A good coffee drinkers porter.
