Pours amber red. Smell is average, malty, slightly hopped. Taste is reflective of the smell with a slight hoppy bitterness. It's good but not great. Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated and pleasant. I'd get it again sporadically.

On tap at Packinghouse Brewing Company in Riverside, CA.

Pours a clear copper with a foamy orange-beige head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and some earthy aromas. Taste is much the same with a caramel flavor on the finish. There is a very mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that tastes better than it smells in my opinion.

Poured from a bomber into my Bruery snifter. Tall kahki head, rich red/brown color.

Smell is really weird. Fruity, some toffee and caramell and hints of diacetyl. Really kind of throwing me off.

Taste is sweeter and fruiter than I had expected, but a little off, just like the smell. Some bitterness from the hops, but then a weird tartness that I'm not sure is supposed to be in this beer.

Mouthfeel is decent...creamy with good carbonation.

Overall this is a weird beer. I almost drainpoured it, but after the beer warmed a bit it became more palatable. I definitely would not buy this beer again in the bottle, but I'd try it on tap to see if I just had a skunked bottle.

Cheers!

On-tap at Packinghouse

A: As expected, the beer pours red in color with a nice big khaki colored head.

S: Unexpectedly, the aroma is highly fruity. Lots of red berries and red apples with some cherries in there too. Hints of chocolate along with caramel and toffee, and a bit of bread. Not much in the way of hop content.

T: Same story as I take a few sips. Cherries and berries provide sweetness and a hint of tartness to go along with toasted malts, bread, toffee, cocoa, and caramel. Fairly sweet, especially for the Irish style red. Minimal hop contributions here.

M: Medium in body with a moderate carbonation.

O: I liked this one, but it really resembles no other Irish Red Ale I've come across.

Sampled 4/2/2011 at the brewery.

Pours dark red with some brown, off-white head, not much retention but it laces decently.

Aroma is chocolate, caramel, cherry, and some generic fruitiness.

Flavor is cherry, possibly plum, caramel, a hefty dose of chocolate, some roast, but sadly it's tart.

Body is medium and drinkable. Seems to be a favorite at the places that it's served, according to the brewer. Personally I'd take the pale, golden, or blueberry over this or the cream.
