This was my first time visiting the Route 15 Beverage Express since my college days nearly a decade ago. To go in as a beergeek now certainly makes me view the store differently. Upon entering the store one finds a collection of mostly European beers to your left in a nook and a display at the entrance for several local craft breweries. Next to the display was a "Craft Beer Drinker's New Year's Resolution" list. As this was the first major display in the store things were off on a good note.
After passing the display the remainder of the store is a large square warehouse. The center of the square was filled with the traditional BMC as you would expect. Of the four sides of the square one was the cashier/exit, a second was dedicated to discount swell and soda, however the other two full walls contained craft beers. Several local breweries had well stocked mini-displays including Troeg's, Victory, ABC, and Flying Dog. -Interestingly there was a one case per person rule for Nugget Nectar- In addition to the local stuff there were 2-3 cases each of about 30 different breweries from across the country sorted geographically. Everything from Stone, to Abita, Great Divide, to Smuttynose was there.
The prices all seemed reasonable, cheaper then my normal distributor by about $2 however the service was poor. Granted I went over lunch, but there was nobody on the floor and a cashier discovered me on accident as he walked out of the office. He asked if I needed any help but didn't offer advice or assistance when I said I was looking for a good craft beer.
Generally I think this is a good store, they clearly have their heart in the right place supporting local and craft beers, but haven't quite translated the intention into discernable action.
