DATE TASTED: November 25, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: 22 oz. pilsner... OCCASION: watching Blackish to prepare for the Thanksgiving... APPEARANCE: first things first--the bottle spurted foam, necessitating a swift pour; once in the glass, a monstrous white head sits atop a thick, nearly opaque brownish body that does NOT reflect an Oktoberfest--definitely sinking the status quo.. the head crisscrosses with stratus-cloud haze--this appeals on multiple levels...AROMA: forward, malty, and yeasty... nutty cheese comes to mind.... chocolate, some fruity esters, and fenolic alcohol (even at 6% ABV) round the experience into an attractive aroma.. PALATE: medium-bodied, oily, soft and flat... cannot hold its slightly bitter finish--dry like a bock...TASTE: semi-sweet, reasonably bitter--the malt is a hammer that bludgeons other flavors...some chocolate and tobacco... an odd attempt at an Oktoberfest ...OVERALL: this is my first Thomas Creek, and I planned to mock the company tag line--until the tag rang true... easily the heaviest, least hopped fest I have had... and while I applaud their desire for uniqueness, the beer struggles to be drinkable at times, with a syrupy sweetness and a malty bitterness that challenges and rewards in due time...

I am spending a slow Sunday catching up on the beer backlog and ramping up to Th' Stillers game at 1300 and I have been on a Stout/Porter/Oktoberfest/Marzen kick for the last couple of days. Word has it that I may get my hophead taken away if this keeps up.

From the bottle: "Sink the Status Quo."

I Pop!ped the cap and began with a heavy-handed pour that produced two fingers of dense, tawny head with good retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake. Color was a beautiful Deep-Amber/Light-Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. The nose held a pleasant biscuity maltiness, which is what I want in the style, not a malt bomb! The taste was Goldilocks-Oktoberfest/Marzen! Just right. It had a light sweetness balanced with a biscuit dryness and then a hint of grassy Noble hops. Perfect! The finish was semi-dry and just right for bringing me back from an unwanted sugar rush. The Germans would be proud of this American-made version. I know that I am! Pass me a pretzel.

Unless the tomato soup I'm having for breakfast is fucking with my taste buds (a real possibility), that's not hops I taste. This beer reeks of barleywine-styled syrupy booziness.

I love German Oktoberfesten. Most American copycats, while sweeter, still manage to match the malty profile, with full understanding that hops are a necessary evil for balance's sake. I'm not a fan of this one at all.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a copper color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, some breadiness. Taste is caramel malts, nutty, hops at the finish, highly refreshing. Feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall a good example of the style.

Above average Marzen. Lots of carbonation but good.

Pours a clear copper, leaves a rather frothy white head that recedes slowly, leaves plenty of lacing on the glass.

Smell is underwhelming, almost nonexistent. Slight fruity yeast scents, not much else.

Taste took me aback. A strong helping of caramel malt, with brown bread notes, a nice subtle hop bite, ends with a bit of corn.

Light bodied, low carbonation, fairly clean, but less crisp and more smooth.

A tasty lager, certainly wasn't expecting this from a random single off the misfits cart.
