Hello, this is my first review. I've drank craft beers for a few years now, but now that I've started homebrewing, I figured I should probably start working on refining my beer-senses.

Never saw this doppelbock before today but I have liked other beers from this brewery so I thought I would give it a try.

I poured into a pilsner glass and obtained a nice 1 1/2 in thick and creamy head that crested over the top of the glass. The color is pretty nice looking, a very dark amber. As I drank on the foam settled down to just a light coating over the beer, but it features some decent lacing every drink.

You could pleasantly smell the yeast for a minute or two upon opening but that quickly dissipated (I have a bad sense of smell due to allergies). It's still lingers a bit though.

This is a sweet brew, but it has been balanced well enough that you get other flavors from the malts. It kinda tastes sassy like hard alcohol, but it's not overwhelming, just a little strange since it's not terribly high abv... is it too much hops? I can't really tell, but it's not the most flattering flavor with this style.

Mouthfeel was ok, but it still kinda burned a little more than expected for such low abv. It felt better at the back of my tongue...which led to immediate consumption.

It's not the best doppelbock I've had, but it is still worthy to drink. Maybe a little overpriced where I bought it at $9.99 a sixer.

I was more into this brewery's double ipa "up the creek".

Pours out a deep maroon brown with a lovely patch of dimpled khaki foam.

Slightly oxidized maltinesd with brown bread kilning, sourdough crusts, Scotch ale meatiness, and a depth of sweetness reminiscent of raisin.

Failed. Overly oxidized and cardboard-like. Malts tried to stay intact, with rickety foundation. Chewed over by apparent time. Dark fruits almost gone. Tinny flavor and aged hop rot preside.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD USE BOTTLE DATING!!

Bottled January 23 2014

Tsk tsk, TC. This totally should have been called radpidator or paddlator or some other made up word with ator at the end.

Pours a deep black with a deep tan head. OK lacing. Bonus points there, too many "dopplebocks" are too light in color IMO. Nose is toffee with hints of caramel and coffee. Taste is roasted coffee forward, and really seems to miss the dopplebock sweetness. Mouth feel is spot on though, super crisp and refreshing.

Overall, a fine beer, but the lack of sweetness on the palate with refreshing quality pushes it more towards the taste profile of a porter than a dopplebock to me.
