French Broad brews have been available only on tap in the Triangle, and only a few have ever made it at all. I've enjoyed every one I've tried. Now, at least three bombers have entered our area (13 Rebels, Dunkel Witte, and Wee-Heavy-er), and I couldn't be happier.

The Wee-Heavy-er pours a dark, nutty brown, with a light tan head that dissipates rather quickly and provides only a lean surface covering. Tea dominates the nose, while roasted malts, caramel, and brown sugar linger in the background. The flavor is heavy on the malts, with a dramatic hop bitterness at the finish. It's well-balanced, with a mild sweetness up front and a combination of malt/bitter in the aftertaste. The alcohol is certainly noticeable.

Carbonation is just right, and it's medium bodied.

A: Dark brown, Finger of beige head fades fast, semi-opaque but filtered, slight red tinge when held to the light.

S: Coffee, dark toasted malt, slight scotch scent, rye- pumpernickel bread, cigarette breath.

T: Coffee, rye-pumpernickle bread, cigarette, sweetness on the end. I think of dark lagers like the one from Portugaul, but more sweetness and other elements. Biscuity and bready.

M: Medium body with some syrup quality as well as medium high carbonation.

O: Not like Old Chub which is my fav so far in this style, but fair. Fine by itself or with some Haggis or turnips.

Poured from a can into a La Fin du Monde tulip. The pour is a beautiful reddish-brown, quite dark and clear, and sports a nice thick foamy head with some really good retention and lacing. Somewhat mild nose with light notes of toasted malt, hazelnuts, and toffee.

Medium body, firm feel, and a malt-forward flavor. Not as rich as some Scotch ales, but still a fair amount of toasty goodness. Some bread and biscuit notes up front are quickly accented by raisins, toffee, and then by just enough of a hop kiss to provide some spice on the finish. Very drinkable and food-friendly beer.

Poured into a New Belgium goblet. No freshness date.

A- Pours a light brown color with a 1/4 inch light tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thick bubbly ring behind.

S- Mild roasted malt brings notes of cocoa and vanilla plus the usual Scotch ale mustiness.

T- The malt is even more mild in the flavor, dropping to more of a toasty level. Slightly sweet with more notes of cocoa and vanilla. Alcohol is well-hidden and everything is smooth but there's not a whole lot of character in the taste overall.

M- A tad dry with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- It's important to note that there are very few Scotch ales I've met and liked. That being said, this one isn't bad IMO since it's drinkable and unoffensive, but I would be reaching for something else if it wasn't for the fact I got this for free and have nothing else to drink.

bomber into tulip. no bottled on date.

A: really deep caramel color. looks opaque brown at first, but it is not. great clarity. off-white head with good retention. thick lacing.

S: a mild chocolate and even more roast. virtually no hop aroma. smells dry as more and more roast comes into play.

T: chocolate and dry roast similar to the nose, however I am getting the faintest acrid smoke flavor as it warms. undetectable at first, but opens up a little with warmth. I would say chocolate is the biggest presence here. maybe a little vanilla? slightly sweet finish, but mostly dry.

M: moderate to low carb. medium body.

D: not a bad brew, but not a wee heavy to me at all. too roasty, chocolately, and not enough malt complexity to be to style for the wee heavy. they have a great base going here, just need to add some more unfermentables and build more caramel/body. imo of course.
