A: Pours a clear very dark amber in color with almost a hint of dark brown to it, moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass, and moderate amounts of cola brown highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of sweet toffee malts with light to moderate aromas of light fruit/green apple and just a touch of toasted malts.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of sweet toffee and toasted malts with a moderate amount of brown sugar sweetness. The sweetness fades into a light to moderate flavor of light fruit/green apple and apple cider. Just a hint of earthy hops in the finish which lend just a touch of bitterness which fades quickly. Hints of booziness but not much.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Easy drinking considering the strength of the beer and it has a nice complexity to the flavor with enough but not too much sweetness. Enjoyable.

Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: Total Wine & More in Ballantyne (Charlotte), N.C.
Price: $2.49
Purchased: Sept. 9, 2014
Consumed: Sept. 15, 2014
Misc.: N/A

Poured a dark mahogany semi-opaque color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki-tan frothy lacing. Healthy dose of bubbles coming up from the bottom at lots of different locations. Minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled dark apple, caramel, toffee, red apple, Scotch whiskey, dark sour fruit and apple juice. Apple I tell you. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted similar to the nose. Got dark apple, red apple, apple juice, caramel, toffee, light butterscotch, Scotch whiskey, honey and more dark sour fruit. (Taste - 3.50)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. Alcohol was well hidden. (Feel - 3.88)

This was a better than average scotch beer, although I feel like I slightly overrated it (without looking at the eventual ratings). (Overall - 3.75)

One of the overlooked CANtributors to The CANQuest ™ is one of my local beer people, soon (eventually) to be a “Character” in my column – Justin C. He does a good job of looking out for new and different CANs for me in his travels and this is one with which he recently returned.
From the CAN: “Wee Heavy-er Scotch Ale is a rich, malty session beer designed for food, friends and fun.”
The thing about these French Broads is that they often show up in (at least) pairs! I like that this one is a Wee Heavy. Er.
The Crack! revealed a well-filled French Broad who was a Wee Heavy. I picked her up and gave her an inverted Glug to kick off our time together. There was a nice pseudo-cascade which settled into three fingers of dense, light-brown head with good retention. Color was Light-Copper to Copper (SRM = 14.5) and the preciseness is due to the brewery including it on the CAN. Thanks! The nose had an earthy sweetness, sort of medicinal, like Geritol or along those lines. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full. Taste was quite vegetal, mostly earthy and not at all pleasant. The BJCP app tells me that this is allowable due to the use of peaty malt, but I was not digging it. We used to be admonished NOT to review based on style due to brewers’ interpretations, but if I rated this just on its merits, it would do very poorly. By taking style into account, it at least gets a fighting chance. Finish was semi-sweet but that vegetal taste was going to linger with me for a while. Ugh.

2011 vintage

a - poured a one finger thick eggshell-colored head into a snifter. the body was a dark dull brown with purple edges.
s - dark fruits and toasted malts.
t - raisins, chocolate, toasted bread.
m - medium and slick.
o - good beer, not up there with some of the other scotch styles i've had but good nonetheless.
