A: Clear, golden-ish brown. Off white head reduced to a cap.

S: Excellent rye malt presence, grainy and spicy. Hop presence is all rinds - lemon, orange, grapefruit. Not juicy, sort of muddled but in a good way. Well balanced nose.

T: Piny, citric hop bite turns grassy mid sip. Malt comes off grainy and spicy as in the nose, but a caramel malt-ish base now plays a supporting role. Finish is bitter and dry, ending with that citrus rind note.

M/D: Smooth, medium carbonation. Packing a ton of flavor at only 5.9%, this beer has nothing to hide. Excellently crafted, almost sessionable too.

Bomber poured into a Duvel tulip. Kind of a copperish dark amber topped with a creamy head that's modest in size but tenacious. Plentiful streaky and splotchy lacing.

The huge rye presence in the nose works quite well with the dry and roasty malt profile. Just a hint of toffeeish sweetness. Tastes pretty much as advertised, absolutely loaded with rye that coats and lingers. It's powerful enough to limit drinkability a bit, but this is tasty stuff. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Between the rye, the dry malt profile and the assertive pine bitterness, this stuff is downright puckering. Kind of a popcorn kernel taste in there.

Overall impression: Fans of rye should definitely seek this one out.

Pours a clear reddish amber that is almost mahogany. Malty aroma has a rye overtone and hoppy and yeasty hints. Strongly hoppy flavor has a firm rye tone and only a little bitterness. Texture is rough, fizzy and ragged. This one is a joy to drink if you like a firm, sassy, earthy beer.

A: The beer is clear amber in color and poured with a thin white head.
S: There are moderate aromas of grapefruit hops in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has some citrusy flavors as well as some flavors of rye.
M: It feels medium-bodied and smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: This beer is very drinkable because there is a good balance between the flavors from the malts and hops.

Head is a little strange. The bubbles are massive, like soap bubbles, but it is not off-putting enough for it to effect the beer's quality. Color is an attractive clear, light, amber. It smells like a well-hoped American Pale Ale with bright pine and citrus notes. It tastes quite hoppy-bitter off the bat, followed by the rye spice that warms your throat, like flavors of whiskey.

As a rye fan, the heaping hops seem to crowd the stage. Nonetheless, Rye Hopper is a delicious rye beer which pours some extra spice into the otherwise hidden malt base.

Insanely carbonated beverage here. Gentle pour created two fingers of head in my ten ounce pint glass. Get outta town with thgis one. Top is creamy, awesome, like freshly made styrofoam before you rip into it with rage and dismay at the direction your life may have gone.

Nice golden honey body that is clear reveals constant streams of bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Retention time is very appropriate, strong puffy lacing lingers around the edges making perfect circles.

Smells of pine, mild citrus, and a bit of spiciness that could only be the rye. Pretty simple build. Minor astringency of spices and plastic comes forth on the back end as it warms.

First impressions are mixed and confused. Seems to have the hops dominate the front while the rye spices up the back end? Interesting mix-up here. Again the opening is a bit citrus, a whole lot of pine, and a nice spiced back end. Nothing amazing, just simple.

Mild body has a very crisp opening, dry finish ( and middle for what its worth ), and mild lingering potential in the cracks and crevices of my mouth. Drinks easy, and I'm glad to have tried this. Probably wouldn't suggest this as the be all end all rye beer, though.

Poured into a E&J Cask & Cream glass on 1/3/11

Many thanks to PDXHops for the French Broad hook up

Medium tobacco brown color, boasting excellent clarity. One finger head thinned quickly leaving a small patch of bubbles amid a skim of foam. Impressive swaths of lace. Looks great.

The aroma is very well structured; the use of rye in the nose is quite impressive. With an overt dryness there is a fine balance between breadiness & spice. Accenting the rye are notes of American hops; piney & citric (think orange peel).

Similar to the aroma, the taste is plenty dry though the structure seems to differ. Piney bitterness hits first, in moderate quantity, followed by an earthy notion & subtle spiciness. The rye is seated further still, making a solid backdrop of toastiness.

Medium bodied wrought with dryness. I find the carbonation to be a speck below average; certainly appropriate for the beer. As it warms a bit of a coating feel takes hold. Dry finish with lingering bitterness & rye.

French Broad has a good thing going on with this one; rye is showcased without going overboard. At 5.9% abv, not only is it tasty, is goes easy on the palate. Recommended.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass. pours a hazy golden-amber, with a 1/2" foamy creme-colored head that slowly reduces with decent retention along the sides. Got this, along with all my other Asheville, NC brews, from my sister and brother-in-law during Christmas. Thanks guys!

Has a hoppy, citrus smell, with a smokey malt backbone. There's an underlying leafy, almost peaty aroma as well.

Presents bitter, mildly lemony, and somewhat sweet, with a nice citrus profile. Somewhat grassy, this is a very pleasant session style beer.

Mild to medium bodied, with a lingering bitterness after it finishes.

Like many of the Asheville beers I've had, it is more timid than it need be. Still, I would happily put another down on a warm summer day on the beach!

Rye Topper pours a nice copper/amber color. It's clear, and looks a little orange when held to light. Carbonation looks to be very active, yielding a foamy, off-white head that's over three fingers tall. Eh. It's a little annoying. Needless to say, it takes a while to dissipate. Lacing was quite thick and sticky.

The nose is good. It kicks off with a nice caramel malt scent. There's a hint of toasted malt, as well. Rye is rather prominent and very effective. It's similar to a really interesting rye bread. There's a healthy amount of hops, as well. It certainly lives up to its name. The hops are noble-esque and citric. A little grapefruit and orange are noted. Alcohol isn't noticeable.

The flavor is very impressive. The caramel/toasted malt base is excellent. The toasted flavor is more prominent here, and blends well with sweet caramel. The spicy rye flavor is nothing short of tremendous. It's an excellent complement to the hops that emerge. The hops seem noble. There are some citrus grapefruit and orange flavors, but there are some floral and grassy notes. It's bitter, but not overly so. Alcohol is very light in the mix and goes largely unnoticed. It finishes spicy, bitter, and dry. Excellent!

Rye Hopper has a medium body that's surprisingly smooth. Carbonation is active, but the bubbles feel light. Nice job. Drinkability is extremely high in my book. This is damn tasty stuff. At sub-6% abv, it's inviting. I wish I had more than a bomber! No joke.

This is my first beer from French Broad Brewing Company, and I'm damn impressed. Rye Hopper has a ton of flavor crammed into a small package. The only small complaint I have is that the carbonation might be a tad high. It's not so noticeable since the bubbles feel small, but the head is annoying. Yes, I'm nitpicking it, I know. Excellent beer that's well worth seeking out. Thanks a ton, Dan!

22 oz into a pint

A - Pours a clear, golden to brown color. Somewhat opaque, but no floating materials. Head formation is light, off white in color. Starts at 1mm, breaks down to a film.

S - A big time grainy, somewhat sweet, rye nose. The astringency of that malt is very apparent. Some american hopping is noticeable, but only in the background.

T - Starts off lightly sweet, 2 row malt, clean barley. In comes a very earthy, grainy rye note - astringency begins to grow. Mid-stream gets more stinging, biting grain notes. Finishes with the first recognizable hops.

M - Higher carbonation, moderate beer body. Stinging carbonation overcomes any shortcomings in the body. Finishes with a grainy astringent tongue grabbing film.

D - Moderate drinkability. This beer's rye-ness is probably good to style, but not good for sessioning. A bit abusive to the tongue, could be more balanced. Higher carbonation can be filling.

poured from a 22 oz bomber in to an irish pint glass
lovely golden brown ruby hued elixer, nice white head that disapates quickly, leaving a nice lace down the glass
I like the rye forward hoppy aromas of this brew
well balanced hop rye ale, the rye and hops play well together. big fan of the bittering rye flavs and they compliment the hoppy bittering as well.
I find the mouth on this ale to be a well to the style, good carbonation with a very nice rye burn if you will.
Lots of hops with a nice rye, I find this highly quaffable

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a brown color and a clear texture. There was an inch of creamy, long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A sweet smell of citrus, hops, and a tinge of rye.

T: Tasted of hops and lemon, with some malt and rye in the finish. A very sweet and vibrant flavor that seems to have more in common with an IPA than a rye beer.

M: A well carbonated beer with a slick, oily finish. Medium-bodied.

D: A pleasant, drinkable beer.

Got a draft pint at the CNN Center Taco Mac during a work conference. Pours an amber-orange color, topped by a bit of creamy white head that leaves a bit of pretty lacing on the glass. Aroma is heavy on the malt and rye - slightly tangy, with a touch of caramel and some citrusy hops.
Palate is up front with the rye and barley malt - a blend of mild caramel sweetness and spicy, tangy rye. The hops come through mid-palate, giving a flourish of pine and/or grapefruit before yielding again to the spiciness of the rye on the finish.
Body is light but substantial enough to carry the flavor. Nicely drinkable. I'm impressed with this offering - not a knockout by any means, but a solid, quaffable ale that takes advantage of the rye quality. I should seek out more rye beers - this is interesting.

A: The appearance was good with an orange to amber color that had some bubbles and a nice white head. There was a bit of haziness to the color.

S: Loved the smell as it was very fresh without having citrus notes.

T: First beer with rye and the rye was upfront. It was a little bit too "dry" for me.

M: A little bit too much carbonation for my tastes. Not sure if this is purposeful with the style... The rye and carbonation was prominent on the palate.

D: I had a hard time finishing this one. I'm still learning what I like and may have to revisit this one day when my experience grows.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a dark rusty orange with a thin white head on top. Recedes to just a sheet across the surface. Some lace is left behind after each sip. I don't know what to make of the nose. At first whiff, I get sawdust, grain, and sour fruit. But as I'm sipping and taking a breath, this resembles wet gym clothes and locker room. Seriously. It smells odd to me.

Good crisp clean mouth. Fair carbonation. Refreshing finish. The rye really makes itself known in the flavor. Grainy start but gives way to slight souring notes, and a dry finish. I've wanted to try this one for awhile, and finally pulled the trigger. I'm not sure it's one I would make a regular buy, but I'm glad I tried it.

A: Dark amber in color with a hint of orange. There is a fluffy 2 finger white head that has excellent lacing and moderate retention. Overall, this is a beautiful beer.

S: The weakest part of this beer in my opinion. There is not much going on here, and the nose definitely leavings me wanting more. I get a little bit of rye, but not much, and a tad of cherry.

T: Thankfully the taste is way more interesting, deep, and complex than the smell. Lots of rye up front, and as the beer warms, the bitter hop profile comes alive at the finish. This is a very nicely balanced beer.

M: Spot on mouthfeel. There is a nice aftertaste, a medium body, and a nice level of carbonation.

D: Pretty high drinkability, although as this warms that bitter hops become a little too pronounced for me.

22oz bottled June 21, 2010.

Pours clear copper/amber with a one finger white head that quickly fades to a small foamy island and ring, but does leave some nice lacing.

Rye bread is heavy on the nose with a good deal of citrus, earthy, grassy, floral hops, a little caramel and toffee, good strength.

Flavor features strong grapefruit hops, a little pine and earth, caramel, and a nice wave of rye bread in the middle with its inherent spiciness that meshes well with the bitterness from the hops on the finish. Very well balanced and quite robust and flavorful.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, medium to high carbonation, a bit oily.

Wow, this one exceeded expectations, right up there with the fantastic Red's Rye from Founders. The best French Broad brew I've had to date.

Pour: Deep red with khaki head. head breaks down but only to a thick lacing the head over.

Nose: bready fruit malts, rye spice notes blend with hop profile, and lightest touch of bittersweet cream at the end

Mouth: you can hardly tell its 59 IBUs the spice of the rye are either dominant or blended to a level where hops an rye are nearly indistinguishable. bit of fruit then spicy bread to hops to that bittersweet cream advertised in the nose.

This is my first french broad and pretty damn tasty. i think this does well as the 'medium' of the genre. would lend its self to an american session beer, though purists will whine due to the 5.9% ABV, too hard core you know.

a: dark, nutty amber in color, capped with a low, lightly retained head

s: big note of rye to start things off - sweet and rich, fruity and spicy with a pungent body of that unique rye character, caramel and some carob, nicely hopped with sweet citrus and pine, dig how the rye really comes out here

m: carbonation on the low side, body medium-heavy

t: again a big rye presence, sweet and spicy, bready caramel, complex grain, earthy pine hop flavor with a nice finishing bitterness

d: just fine - unique and flavorful, bomber with no problem

A new addition to the Nashville market here so I picked up a couple of bombers on my way through...

Pours an almost brown with a thick creamy head on it... Wow, this is an awesome looking brew actually. I'd swear this was a Marzen from the looks of it...

Spicy rye aromas mingle with a surprisingly citrusy hop presence here. I'm a little shocked at the hoppiness present here but pleasantly....

Biscuity malts up front followed swiftly by the hoppiness that soon takes over and mixes wonderfully with the spiciness of the rye... This is delicious... A little thin on the palate is my only complaint here..

This brew shocked the hell out of me... I loved it and will definitely be picking up more...

Poured from 22oz bottle.

A- Pours a nice hazy amber brown color. Two finger cream colored head. Streaking lacing that lasted

S- Grapefruit right up front on this. Nice sour rye notes. Caramel and Bready malts are more here than you would usually find in a Rye.

T- A mellow bready & brown sugar taste Bready malts in the middle. but rounded out by the spicy and distinctive rye flavor. bitter hop flavor to round out this beer. Light bitter yeasty flavor at finish

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation seems just right. I was using a big mug. Medium drying on the palate with this beer. Nice bitter flavor left on the palate and light rye and alcohol left at the end.

D- This was a very drinkable beer. Rye beers are getting to be one of my favorite styles.
This is slightly more meaty than most. . I personally liked this beer. It was a nice surprise to see on Ingles beer shelf

A - Poured out a clear, copper color with a one-finger, egg shell white head of foam. Short-lived retention and very little lace.

S - It smelled of citrus (mostly orange) and rye bread.

T - Nice citrusy hop presence. Very good rye flavor with some bready malt backbone.

M - It was crisp and sharp with a dry finish. A medium bodied rye brew.

D - This is a pretty good rye beer.

Picked up a bomber from Princeton Liquors. It's a surprise to find this beer in MN when I didn't see this beer the last time I was in North Carolina.

At first whiff, this beer reminded me of the Middle Ages Wailing Wench, so being a hoppy beer with (my guess here) Ringwood yeast character and duacetyl. After the initial punch of butterscotch candy, there's richly earthy rye layered with biting grapefruit and citrus rind hops. The body is crisp and drinkable and overall this is a fine (and interesting) rye beer. Certainly worth a try.

Pours an enticing copper color with attractive beige head that dissipates into moderate lacing. So, in other words, nice enough to good. That, unfortunately, is where the charm sort of ends.

Smells a bit like tomatoes, which, mind you, I tend to find in Rye ales. But this one was less an accent and more pronounced, which I didn't much like. The flavors are particularly grassy and somewhat cooked, which makes me wonder about the condition of the bottle (mind you, it was in the cooler of a very, very popular beer store). The texture itself was a bit washed out and the cooked nature of the finish certainly had ill-effects on the drinkability.
