caramel color with a small head of off white that hung for a good long while before settling down. Lots of malty goodness on the nose right away. Caramel, nice earthy tones with an almost peat like touch to it as it warms. Nice body, a bit undercarbonated for me, but still decent. Warm bready malts, a light touch of grain and a smooth, rather dense caramel flavor wash over the palate. Intresting blend of flavors, but nothing really show stopping

On tap at Barley's the other night.

The beer pours an amber brown color with OK at best head retention and decent lacing. On the nose I'm surprised by what I smell. While attractive, I normally don't encounter the sort of roasty and smokey aroma I'm picking up. The beer really smells more like a robust porter, with smoke, roasty sweet malt, and something of a tootsieroll aroma. Hmmmm.... Flavors generally replicate the nose, with the flavor profile dominated by the dry, roasty smoke flavors. It's not terrible, but is not what I was expecting in a wee heavy scotch style ale. Mouthfeel is fairly light, and the flavors drop off a bit on the finish. Drinkability is OK, with the alcohol not at all noticeable.

An interesting effort, but just not my cup of tea.

This beer had a smell head. It was a light mahogany color. The smell was similar to a red ale. The taste was good for the style. It was a little thin bodied and had a macro type aftertaste. I could drink these again. A decent Scotttish Ale. This beer should not be confused with the Wee-Heavier Scotch Ale. Two different beers, two different styles.

Served on tap at Terry's in SC.

No head whatsoever. Not sure if that is due to the pour or lack of head forming ability of the beer. No lacing either. Quite dissapointing looking.

No aroma. I tried and tried to get some aroma and could not for the life of me get anything out of this brew. Again, dissapointing.

Malty taste is nice. No hops in the flavor. However, the beer is slightly fruity, which is usually indication of hops. Interesting.

Average beer. No body, a bit watery. Not my favorite. Try a different kind of scotch ale.

Purchased a growler of this at Greenlife in Asheville.
Poured up an amber color, very clear and bright. Not much head, a think layer that disappeared quickly.
Some malt smell, with a touch of sweet bread.
The taste was similar to the smell, with a nice malt flavor being the dominant one, with some hop near the end, more sweet or light syrup than hop.
Possibly due to the growler, but not much on the carbonation side. Smooth, somewhat creamy, and easily drinkable.
Not a bad beer, but I thought it would be a bit stronger. Actually, I was hoping it was a post 'pop the cap' creation, but sadly, it was quite a bit under the 6% cap. Still, I would order another one from the tap if it were a warmer day.

cheers...

Appearance: Arrives at the table with a clear medium amber body and a slim head that leaves no lacing

Smell: Weak caramel malt nose with a slight note of piney hops in the background; sure doesn't smell like a Wee Heavy

Taste: Caramel malt flavors are quickly subsumed by piney hops with a building bitterness; crisp with some fruitiness in the middle; in the finish, the sweetness returns as the bitterness fades in intensity; sure doesn't taste like a Wee Heavy

Mouthfeel: Medium/thick body, almost chewy with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: I really enjoyed this beer but it ain't a Wee Heavy; I don't even think it tastes like a Scottish Ale; I would put it more in the category of an alt or an amber ale.

Why does this brewery want to confuse the market in this way?

Had this on tap at the brewery. Poured a dark amberbrown color with a tannish sudsy head. Not much on the nose, maybe some toffee smells, but the taster took over. Nice sweet malt flavor that had touches of caramel and maybe coffee/chocolate. Had a good grassy hop bite towards the end. Easy drinking with a crisp light mouthfeel. Not very heavy, but a nice try for a scotch ale.

Tried this at the Mellow Mushroom in Asheville: Deep dark brown color with a slightly creamy head. Rich malty flavor that had some complexity with a smooth aftertaste. Hops stayed in the background but balanced nicely. Very pleasant and not too filling. I'm not too experienced with Scotch ales but this seems fairly true to style.
